Didn't you just buy the CARD game by accident, thinking it was the videogame?

I almost did that once... but I decided I really didn't need a candy bar THAT bad.

Also welcome to the boards... stick around we have a good time here.

As for it being "fair" I would have paid over $30..... so MUAAHAHAHAHA.... TTG didnt get all the money they could have.

You know, there was once a Telltale that gave refunds to people after they made Abe Lincoln Must Die a free game. There was once a Telltale that, when they added a major promotion for buying Wallace and Gromit right after the first episode launched, applied it retroactively to all the people who had already pre-ordered the game, even though they had a special price break offer already.

Between the card game offer and this, you know what? Telltale, you suck.

Well..i bought my copy of BTTF for 17.90...i guess the promotions are overlapping one another.

Ehhh...I'm just getting the first free episode to see if it runs on my laptop. If it does, then I might spring for the rest of the season, but in all honesty, I'll probably just get it on my PS3.

I always find Mr. Dashing's rants entertaining myself... I imagine him as a very angry person... but he always comes back around for more TTG....

Rather Dashing does have a valid point though :P

Yes, he does. My comment was about the way he expressed it. It seems early pre-order folk are being penalised five whole dollars (the price of admission to the Insiders forum, the exclusive chats and contests maybe?). But if you want to open a dialogue about it, throwing your toys out of the cot and yelling insults isn't probably the best way to go about it.

He was happy enough (I assume) to pay $25 for the season in the first place.

Telltale has gone from absurdly generous to just regular generous, yes. Oh well. It'd be nice if they implemented some sort of pre-order price/bonus guarantee, but there was no such guarantee in place at the time that I ordered.
  • edited December 2010
I doubt I'll be preordering any more telltale games until a day or so before they come out. The insider forum benefits and general convenience don't outweigh getting gipped on later specials, because you preordred before the specials were announced. I'll tell my friends till wait till Tuesday before preordering to. Who knows what other deals will be announced between now and then I'll miss out on for being an early adopter.
  • edited December 2010
I'd say that's a good plan for those who are budget conscious and don't care for partaking in the Insider forum.

Right. It's a good plan for people who don't want to be ripped off, spat on, and largely ignored in the same fashion one might ignore week-old leftovers.
  • edited December 2010
Have you been ripped off, though? You thought the season was worth spending $25 on a month or two ago ($10 cheaper than most of the other Telltale seasons). It's still the same product you're getting.

Is it not worth $25 now (ignore the fact that some people are getting it for $20, or possibly $17)?
  • edited December 2010
I think you're missing the point. It doesn't matter how much it's actually worth. It matters how much the person's selling it at. Typically when people try to sell a game this way, they sell it cheaper than what it typically sell early on to get a lot of sales, as a reward to those who buy earlier, and to a certain point, punishing those who do not. Minecraft does this. It's not even finished, and it's selling for half, with it getting progressively more expensive as it get's closer to being finished.

By putting the game on discount before it even comes out is punishing those who bought the game earlier and rewarding those who pay for it later. It's just plain backward and bad business.
  • edited December 2010
    I agree.

Whilst I was happy to pay $24.95 for the game, I have pre-ordered other TTG releases before but I'm not sure if I'll be so sure to jump in again so early. There's just no benefit - it's not like there's a limited number of copies of the game to ship and I haven't ever used my collectors DVDs to install, its much too convenient to download from the website.

By ordering early and having faith in TTG that this is going to be a fantastic game (I'm sure it will be) we've had to pay $5 more than people who just happened upon the game from the BTTF Blitz Facebook game.

$5 isn't a great amount of money but it does feel a little like a kick in the teeth to the early adopters.

We could have all refrained from pre-ordering, downloaded the free episode and then if it was any good, purchase it afterwards.

I can confirm that Direct2Drive has BttF listed for $21.95, and there is the 20% off code that brings it down to $17 if anyone is still looking to pre-order.

    £10.80 ~ 17.USD

Well, I think it does. I understand why people are pissed, though. 100%.

Devil's advocate... If you were happy to have paid $25 before, then you're still getting the same product for the price you were happy to pay, no?

And, as has been discussed, Telltale are just encouraging people not to pre-order early in future, which seems as backward to me as it does to you.

The difference between your early $25 purchase and these discounts is the insider forum and the chats, early info / game assets and the contests therein. I'm sure a lot of people think it's worth the $5 - $8 extra. You mileage obviously varies, and I completely understand why you're annoyed.

Say you go to a store and you see two identical limited edition dolls. One is selling for 10 bucks, the other selling for 20. I want the doll no matter what because I know that they're special and in limited quantity. Obviously, I'm going to go for the item of the cheaper price, even if I believed it was worth more.

Now say the dolls costing 10 dollars were hidden deep in the pile of 20 dollar dolls. I don't see the 10 dollar dolls, so I quickly purchase the 20 dollar doll because it is limited, as well as believing that I can only purchase the doll at this price. Later I find out that many folks bought the same doll at the same store for a cheaper price. I would feel cheated out of my money, no matter how much I believed the doll was worth. I wouldn't be happy about the price I paid at all.

This wouldn't be such a huge deal to me, if it weren't for the fact that Telltale's been pulling this shit for a while now. Sales are one thing, but putting a game on sale within a month of it being released? Heck, being put on discounts before it's even released?

I don't know about you, but this gives me the feeling that they're trying to sell this game super bad and it's just not selling, so they're throwing this up at us. Just speculation of course, but that's what it really seems like.

No. No ones happy paying a higher price for something when a lower price is available.
Better example: You go to a store see a game marked for $20 and take it to the counter. You get to the counter and the cashier tells you you have to pay $25 for the item because you entered the store an hour before the item was marked down. Would you be happy paying the higher price?
You buy the item and walk outside and see them putting a sign up saying you get a free card game with the game. You go back in and again they apologise and tell you that deal was only for people who bought the game in the short period you were standing outside with your already purchased copy.
You'd be less then thrilled. Then you take the game home knowing the box is empty because the game isn't finished yet and just contains a code so you can download it in few weeks time (This has happened to me, but is just an analogy here). So there was no rush to buy it. You could have waited for these sales had you known the company was going to behave that way. Instead all you've done is given them extra money for them to invest earlier at your expense (which is really one of a few reasons for companies promoting preordering). If they wanted donations it would be less annoying if they just asked for them.
It is so exceedingly rare for a company not to have preorder guarantees... Especially online as there is no reason for a customer to preorder a digital distribution product if the company is not offering preorder benefits. Until telltale introduces one they won't be getting any further investment for me until the end of launch date countdown is imminent.

Wow...a lot of anger going on here. Has anyone here thought about the fact that most video games these days, no matter how short or long they might be, still cost between $50-$60? The Force Unleashed II is a prime example here. It's very short compared to most games out there(though I thoroughly enjoyed it and still feel I got my money's worth), yet it's still a full priced game. You very rarely stumble upon a brand new game for $30 or less, and when you do, it's a Wii shovel-ware sports game or something like that. I'll be happy to pay whatever BTTF costs on the PS3 when that option is available. Now that said, I also don't really see the point in pre-ordering a downloadable game. I personally wouldn't get much use out of "Insider" forums or anything like that.
  • edited December 2010
I bought the game for 24,95 $ and I am not angry at all. It's worth every cent and I would pay more for the full game (like stated from Shadowknight the force unleashed II is a good example).
Some guys got a nice deal, I will not envy them for it. It's just 5 bucks and everybody who preordered could have chatted with the developers since day one, which the others couldn't. If someone didn't do that it is his own problem.
  • edited December 2010
I'll just repeat what others have already said:
I'm perfectly fine with paying 25$ for this game, because it's probably worth that and maybe more (at least I hope so, and don't expect that TTG suddenly makes a bad game and sells it for less, hoping that their customer base just buy it anyway), but I feel cheated when one day after I buy it for 25$ people say that they got it for less, however getting exactly the same thing, with no less bonuses. I mean, if you got it over the facebook link you still get access to the exclusive board and you still get the DVD and whatnot, so people who bought it for 20$ get exactly the same thing that I get for paying 25$.

TTG is certainly within their rights to do this, and admittedly, the 25$ price is STILL pretty low, but I don't get the point of it at all and as said, I feel cheated. And I don't want to play my TT games with the feeling that TTG has robbed me 5$, as much as I try to just ignore it.

The trend is apparently that TTG is trying to make their stuff appealing to random new people who don't even like adventure games, while leaving the actual adventure/TTG fans behind, as in: Those who pre-order as soon as possible, those who enjoy difficult puzzles and those who have made this company what it is today.

Again, from a business perspective this all probably makes sense, but I always thought TTG is more about games and players than business. :(

Why can't the game just be 35$ (or 25) for everyone, at least until after it's released? I'm certainly sure that I won't pre-order anything from TTG until the very last chance from now on. If you sell the game for 17$ it's worth 17$, not more. If it's worth 25$, sell it for 25$, to everyone.

Yes they have the access to the exclusive board since yesterday, all others had it from before.

Wow...a lot of anger going on here. Has anyone here thought about the fact that most video games these days, no matter how short or long they might be, still cost between $50-$60?
No, they don't. AAA, mainstream, gigantic studio games cost $50-60. Most of the best games I've played, though, have cost me $5-20. IN terms of my non-mainstream gaming budget(generally 1 or 2 games per year, though this year has been unusually good for mainstream games), Telltale's games are relatively expensive.
You very rarely stumble upon a brand new game for $30 or less, and when you do, it's a Wii shovel-ware sports game or something like that.
    Minecraft: ~$10 ever since release.

Super Meat Boy: $10 at release, $15 later(was going to be $15 at release, but when a Christmas sale was proposed, Team Meat didn't want to screw over their fanbase by putting a game on sale a mere couple months after released.

VVVVVV: $20 at release, now $5.

    Machinarium: $20 at release.

    The Whispered World was $30.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is $20 from release, I paid $10 in a pre-order special.

Revenge of the Titans: Whatever the hell you want at release.

    And countless other high-quality titles.

And yes, I do feel ripped off. It's also not just a matter of base value, but a matter of benefiting those who don't buy while spitting on and ignoring the dedicated, long-term customers. There was a time when, for everything Telltale would do for anybody who happened upon their store, there was something for the dedicated fans. There was a time when Telltale's customer support would make sure that the dedicated fans weren't screwed over. As of now, Telltale has decided that catering to and retaining long-term, repeat customers is nowhere near as important as drawing in as large of a fickle, cheapskate audience as possible, no matter what that means to their retained fanbase. And I'm thinking that perhaps if they don't care about audience retention, maybe they don't deserve it.

I agree with you 100%, Rather Dashing. This is the second time they've spat on us on one single release. We shouldn't complain, though. Alan will just come around and tell us to stop. That's what happened last time, anyway.

Suffice to say, I won't pre-order any more of their games, and probably won't buy anymore of them either, to be honest. As much as I love the games, there's only so much I can take before I leave, and we're just about there, I think.

    @Ratherdashing

Your list doesn't hold up well.

Machinarium was the equivalent of 1 TellTale episode, maybe 1.5 and without 3D graphics.
Meatboy again had much lower production costs(Basically 1 a 2 man project).
