The problem I see is what's going to stop people from posting such material here or anywhere? I just don't see it happening. They have to draw the line somewhere. Every website with a forum is going to be shut down? Shit I just saw pictures of Batman that are copyrighted a couple threads over. I'm sure there's videos and links posted about too. It's just like that "p" word these forums don't like seeing(rhymes with vagrancy). Even though there's laws, there is no where near the manpower to enforce it. I guess it could pass and twitter, facebook, etc could be shut down... but then people would just move to using an overseas website then another then another until the manpower stopped trying...just like "p". This whole thing is screwed up and I think they know it... they just want to scare people into being ethical.

What foreign sites are as good as Youtube?

The one that pops up in a future if youtube dies

None are as good, no, but there are a few out there. I know there's some cyrillic one that keeps popping up when I search for videos that youtube has "not available in my country".

Tudou is pretty decent. I learned quite a few Chinese characters via osmosis while perusing it, so it was educational as well!

Well, Katherine Oyama of Google has done very well in the hearing, but will her voice, along with the voices of those who sent e-mails to Congress, be enough to stop the passage of the bill? We hope so.

Do you know the process of Congressional legislation or the process of inter committee reconciliation?

It's a giant government bureaucracy. Even if the law DOES change we probably won't see any differences for awhile. I mean, they have to go spend our tax dollars hiring people to go enforce this monstrosity and make up the paperwork to document it. That sort of thing takes time.

You've never seen that movie? I love it.

As a Star Trek fan, I always wish I could have seen the play in which Brent Spiner (Data) played the role of John Adams.

As Muse would say in "Uprising", and I quote for the government trying to censor the Internet:

    They will not force us.
    They will stop degrading us.
    They will not control us.
    We will be victorious.
    So come on!

i'm still waiting for the official response from anonymous. You know how bitchy they get about this kind of thing.

I for one, can't believe that the representative that showed my family around the Capitol Building and attended my brother's Eagle Scout ceremony actually supports this thing. As soon as I can, I'm going to set my mother on him. This is actually a scarier thing than it sounds.

yeah no shit. Besides the absurdity of the whole thing. They were really going to piss off millions of voters before an election? Yeah right.
  • edited November 2011
I think the point no longer really is whether or not the bill will actually make it. The truly frightening thing is that it was even being considered.

    EDIT: Wait a second...

Reading the fine print on this thing, Obama only said he'd veto the FCC net-neutrality laws. There's nothing about SOPA.

I think we're doomed. Time to buy Guy Fawkes masks and parade through the street, people!

That's what I didn't post yesterday, but thanks. Though we are winning, the government is still making attempts to try to pass the bill by spreading lies about us. But we will not give up! Go, censorship opponents!

Well, the government is not a monolithic entity that acts as one. Obviously if Nancy Pelosi is arguing against it then there are senators and representatives that are being disingenuous (and I refer to the distinguished gentleman from Texas here) then the government is not against us, since she is the first female leader of the House and still has a relatively powerful position amongst House Democrats. But there are certainly elements within the legislative branch that are A.) Disingenuous and B.) Genuinely believe this could curtail piracy and promote home growth of the economy.

Plundered from my facebook page: "But you would still be able to find a "blocked" website by typing in its IP address. So...it really would only mildly inconvenience pirates and people who understand this stuff, but it would completely destroy the internet for the average person."

I was thinking the same thing. As has been said many times already, the whole idea is absurd.

I've got this from another link, and it says that "If [SOPA] does pass, the only thing that could shut it down would be a veto by President Obama." So Obama IS still against Internet censorship, and he won't want anything harmful like SOPA to happen to his Twitter or any website! Sweet! :)

I hate to double-post, but the guys who are sponsoring SOPA break their own law by posting a video of the same bill, which they don't know would be their last if the bill passes! What idiots! :D

    https://torrentfreak.com/sopa-sponsors-break-their-own-law-111117/

Now Microsoft, Apple, Dell, Adobe, Comcast, Symantec, Norton, Electronic Arts, Capcom USA, Nintendo, Sony, Sega, THQ, Square Enix, Take Two, and Ubisoft, and the rest of the entire gaming industry and every single corporation except Activision are supporting SOPA too?! Excuse me... *screams like a little girl* AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! They're TRULY censoring their own free Internet speech and security for one stupid little bill that claims it'll stop online piracy! They're MAD! MAD, I SAY!!! To quote someone from Plan 9 from Outer Space: "All of you on Earth are IDIOTS!"

I haven't really seen anything of theirs flagged for copyright. Granted their opinion might have changed since the exposure BTTF created, but I don't think so(obviously excluding illegal copies of games and such...I'm strictly talking images and video in positive light). A growing company will accept a lot for exposure purposes(will never admit that publicly of course as that would open doors). I'll admit that's how I became aware of them. Sam & Max clips. I'm sure a lot of people discovered them the same way these days. Again, BTTF and JP are different examples...they have a fanbase.... they have a lot of people that would drop money on a game just for the title....thing are a little different for S&M, TOMI, etc. Who really knows now.

This is a good thing to go sign. I wish that Senator Wyden was running for president so that I could vote for him.

It's not going to pass, the bill is on hold and many of the initial supporters are disavowing it.
  • edited November 2011
I has question: From what I understood, this involves the USA.
I'm in Europe. Is there anything I can sign... or can I help in any way? I could spread the news through my site as well, or form, or ask for signatures...

I really want to help but I have no idea how. Could anyone please tell me?

Well, here's some more surprising news: The Business Software Alliance is now having second thoughts and backpedaling on SOPA. Good for them.
