Disney Buys Lucasfilm (and other stories)

...and, by extension, LucasArts (since that's what we all really care about, I know).

http://www.benzinga.com/news/12/10/3039512/disney-to-buy-lucasfilm-for-4-05b-in-cash-and-stock

I know, with the likes of Star Wars and Indiana Jones being snatched up, the LA catalogue probably isn't a big priority but I wonder what this could mean for the future of some of our favorite adventure games?

Could a Monkey Island theme park ride be in our future? Hmm.

Is it April fools day already???

Seriously, what does this MEAN? George Lucas to retire?
  • edited October 2012
Actually yes, more or less. From Star Wars, at least.

He's staying on as a "Creative Consultant" for new Star Wars films.

What does this mean in regards to future availability of the new cuts of Star Wars? I hope they're not forgotten about...

Addition to this. Disney also announced Star Wars Episode VII being targeted for a 2015 release date. Yes, the same year that's giving us The Avengers 2 and Justice League.

And Vaina, I had to check my calendar several times to make sure it wasn't April 1st.

So if Disney has Lucasarts does this mean a bigger chance of S&M Hit The Road Special Edition,Curse of Monkey Island Special Edition,Escape from Monkey Island Special Edition & Tales of Monkey Island 2 or does it mean we will never see them?

Well, the deal includes Lucasarts so... nope. No reason to suspect that Lucasarts will change their strategy of "keep a tight death grip on their classic games, adventure or Star Wars".

I wouldn't be so sure. They bought Lucasfilm and then immediately announced they were going to make a new official Star Wars film. It doesn't sound like they bought the company to NOT use the properties it owns.

    Bloody hellfire.
He's staying on as a "Creative Consultant" for new Star Wars films.

Are they the same new Star Wars films he's been denying he ever planned for the last ten years?

Well, changes at the top of Lucasarts usually herald the cancellation of all adventure game projects, so by my calculations, we're now into less-than-no-chance of TOMI2 and re-releases of the back catalogue.

(Hmm... still, now they've got a chance to do a follow-up to that TV special where the Muppets visit Disneyland.... "Indiana Jones and the Magic Kingdom")

Some of my favorite reactions so far on NeoGAF
Man, Disney is a FORCE to be reckoned with
Star Wars going into the vault
Kingdom Hearts 3 will feature Ewoks now
Star Wars X Marvel gonna happen
    Who's gonna play Captain Kirk
    Mickey Mouse conquering all
  • edited October 2012
Does this mean we could get a Indiana Jones and Spider-man cross-over now?! :O

"Our valuation of Lucasfilm is roughly comparable to the value we placed on Marvel when we announced that acquisition in 2009," Disney said, adding that the valuation was almost entirely driven by the Star Wars franchise.

Translation - Monkey Island not worth squat.

Yeah my first thought after bloody hell. WTF and My God.

    "Who will direct it?"
    "Who will score it?"
"Can Intrada release the final complete versions for the scores to SW1-6 and Indy 1-4, Young Indy and so on?"

    Was

"Will this mean the end of LucasArts licenses for Telltale. Will we never get the chance to be Sam & Max again or Guybrush"

On the plus side, at least the movie rights to "Howard the Duck" are back where they ought to be.:D

Steve Purcell owns Sam & Max so they're safe.

Though he does do work for Pixar now, I think. Hmm, possibilities...

We've already got one. It's the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.

Holy fuck, this made me LOL.

A ride that would be greatly improved if it included a three headed monkey.

Honestly, I'm kinda done with adding things to Pirates.

What I could really get behind would be a Grim Fandango ride. Sure, we've got the Haunted Mansion, but the Haunted Mansion doesn't have the Bone Wagon.

To be honest, my first thought was "oh god, Monkey Island is now dead". I really hope that's not true.

Kingdom Hearts can have a Star Wars level!
  • edited October 2012
I wouldn't go bananas over this just yet.

Disney have had a good go at making games, and their licensing isn't too bad.
They care more about them than Marvel and Lucasarts do anyway.

Who knows, maybe they will look very closely into the shambling corpse that is Lucasarts, and decide to either try to revive or put it out of its misery.
(At least those IPs can then be outsourced to companies that actually WANT to make games... -_-)

Screw a Grim Fandango RIDE. Disney Pixar presents Grim Fandango: THE MOTION PICTURE.

I would watch that so much. Seriously, that game was perfect movie material.

It's worse than that. Who owns Marvel? Disney. Who now owns LucasFilm, and therefore Star Wars? Disney.

DISNEY ARE RELEASING TWO FILMS THAT WILL DIRECTLY COMPETE WITH EACH OTHER.

Here's the thing that gives me hope. Lucasfilms has so many great properties but no real desire to do anything with them. Even with Star Wars, all we've gotten recently has been The Clone Wars and the occasional crappy videogame. It seems like Disney bought the company because it intends to actually use the company.

My only fear is that The Clone Wars might suffer the fate that Spectacular Spider-man got.

Now Disney just needs to buy DC and WB.
  • edited October 2012
Why? Then everything would be exactly the same. Variety is the spice of life. Even if it's crap, at least it makes us appreciate the good stuff.
  • edited October 2012
    NO! Disney should buy EVERYTHING!

    Starting with Ubisoft.

    Naw, just kidding.

It would be such glorious chaos, and there would be a million comic book nerd fatalities because nobody could reconcile the DC and Marvel universe existing together.
  • edited October 2012
What if next we see a live action show on Disney channel based on Star Wars!!!! Now that would be a disaster, It would be like Star Wars Kinect's dancing made into a show!.

    Mickey Island, here we come!

Why not let them still compete against each other? You know, like in one big combat, yes, a sort of mortal combat.

That doesn't really look all that great. I'm missing something here.

Please Disney, now that you own Monkey Island. Make reference to how it took the idea from Pirates of the Carribean and then how Pirates of the Carribean immediately took ideas from it? Now that you own both series... no wait, that is a horrible idea nvmd.

Pirates of the Carribean VII: The Secret of Monkey Island.

Because we all know that PotC V and VI are al-wait, are they still being made?

I wonder what will happen to the Indiana Jones franchise, now that they’re transacting to Disney from Paramount.
