I rate the whole season a 8/10, but as a game itself, more like a 5/10. The 8/10 is for the story and the character development. It was very good, but not perfect.
For the game itself... choices DO NOT matter. They only matter in a very short term. To me, this is textbook Mass Effect syndrome. You play through the entire game thinking your choices are going to matter a ton, then at the end of the series, they don't mean jack squat. This is what irked me the most about the game. The only thing they did was reference what you've done and that was it. It didn't have any severe impact on what happened in the game at all. Albeit it was very enjoyable, it didn't feel satisfying at all. The whole "let's end the game on a cliffhanger for Season 2" is a slap in the face. This isn't a movie. We invested a lot of time and money playing this and I for one wanted closure.
The "epilogue" was pointless. Telling Clementine what to do before Lee died again didn't matter although the game itself said that she "would remember that", but apparently she is suffering from a severe case of Alzheimers unless we get some closure. What I was hoping for was a "journey back to whoever survived while playing as Clementine" as the credits were rolling. Nope. Not even that.
Episode 5 felt way too rushed. Why the heck was chapter 7 only a minute long? What it felt like was they had the main premise of Episode 5 worked out already (Lee rescuing Clementine and her killing him in the end), then just bounced filler ideas around until they felt like they had enough to work with.
To be honest, I really hope they would have just ended the storyline with Clementine and gave everyone who played it a proper epilogue and do Season 2 with a new cast of characters...but it seems like they're going to continue with Clementine's story. To me, this won't be the same. Lee and Clementine are like peas and carrots in terms of story structure. You get rid of one (Lee) and it won't be as good. The new protagonist won't be the same. Maybe they'll treat Clementine the same, but it most certainly won't be.
[...] so tell me as 'old skool' adventurer why would I buy this?
Don't. It has nothing to do with real adventure games really. There are no "puzzles" other than "click through several openable closets to find tool a to open door b".
overall, i gave an 8...i loved the game! it was too short! i rushed to play it, and only played once...i cannot go back and change the story now that i know that Lee dies...but Telltalegames did a good job. Hope they saved Lee...i really liked him ...hope we can play with more then one character in season 2
Just finished chapter 5 and It was great! Five truly great chapters in perhaps one of the best games I have played in my life as a gamer. Does It go on my top 20 games list of all times? I think It just might, and I have been playing games from way back when the mighty Commodore 64 was something only my friends had and I couldn´t afford, so I have played many truly awsome games.
So thanks Telltale for five great chapters and for presenting a unique gaming experience.
My wishes for the future of the game? Well, the adventure part could be more challenging, the riddles are often just too simple. Also I wouldn´t mind the chapters being longer, but I would rather that there was less time between the chapters coming out. Then again rushing things just to please could also be a mistake, chapter 4 seemed like It came out with more technical flaws than the others (the only chapter that gave myself and many others - It would seem- downloading difficulties).
Also, let´s have more than 5 chapters next time...make It 8 or 10:)....And when are you going to make Full Throttle 2?
Loved it gave it a 9 and my prediction is this I think clementine sees molly and a random dude(who you will play in season 2)and molly takes it on herself to do what lee did and protect clementine at all cost molly and you will meet up at a random camp with (hostile camp) you get new members and then are being hunted by the hostile gang and you must kill them.Later in the game you go back to savannah finding lee shot in the head (either by clementine or a random gang member) clementine takes the baseball bat and that becomes her main weapon for the rest of the season and at the end of the game someone will die either molly or clementine Anyway thats my guess on season 2
Just had to register to post my appreciation of The Walking Dead.
It's a masterpiece, I've never cried at a game before, the scripting was incredible and special thanks for the actors involved, especially for the two playing Clem and Lee. This game is a masterclass in provoking emotions.

I too registered just to write down my impressions... this was really a true journey with the characters. I hadn't felt such a bond between any two in any game like Lee and Clem. And every episode brought something new... the first one was probably the most packed with zombie action, second one was creepy as hell, and probably the scariest. Third one... wow... lost 3 great characters, felt bad for each and every one of them... killing Duck was probably the hardest part of the whole game... and that episode had a relaxing sensation to it. Riding on the train, camping in front of it before you figure out how to get it running. Fourth episode was a thriller at it's best! And a proper mix of emotions - utter sadness when I saw "My doggie Walter" picture on the fridge, followed by a skinny zombie kid, killing it and placing it into a grave with his friend Walter... a thrill of looting Crawford, a sensation of peace and tranquility when I found refuge in the sewers... a mind puzzling choice making when Kenny said only 5 can get on the boat - I killed Ben just so I don't have to tell him we're leaving him, and I was hoping Omid was dead so I won't have to make such a decision. And anger and disbelief when Clem was taken and a zombie bit me. Episode five was a hectic attempt to save anything that could have been saved, lose of your best friend in the entire game and a horrific ending - pushing through hundreds of zombies and seeing a little girl's heart break as she saw her undead parents... The end was something else as you give your last breath to save the life of a child that seemed almost as a real one after all of this. Bravo Telltale, a job very well done. I can't wait for season 2, I hope it comes out before the end of the year, cause this game just doesn't leave you even when you finish it.
I really enjoyed this game. Loved Lee and Clementine characters and the connection between them. I was immersed in the story instantly. The ending was just too sad but overall it was a really memorable experience.
I think the overall game was amazing, very well voice acted. Bit of a shame the writing wasn't only for their own story and not my own but at least their story wasn't to bad...just wish they were more honest about it, not nice being lied to certainly when you pay for the privilage.
Not many games have made me chocke and for a game to do that to me is a sign of damn good writing, just be more honest next time TTG or make my choices actually matter AND THAT MEANS THE EPILOGUE TO -_-
Up to the beginning of Episode 3 it was an amazing experience. Then the save bugs wouldn't stop and made me regret wasting 13 bucks on the game. I'm sure there's a good story, well-written dialogue and some difficult decisions to make in there but right now I can't rate the game with more than 1 point. If Telltale decides to fix the issues I might return to the game.
I've been a big reader of this forum ever since episode 1, but only now have i made an account for this. I've just finished episode 5 and all i can do is mutter various swears and try and stem the flow of tears streaming down my face (yes i cried, and no i don't care). The end scene was the most powerful and emotionally destroying I've ever experienced in a game. I've spent 7 months of my life looking after this little girl, and now I'm faced with the decision on whether to make her kill me or not. I had to pause the game for 2 minutes because that was the hardest decision of the game, and in the end i couldn't bring myself to make clem shoot me, it was just too hard.
BUT on a plus I'm eagerly anticipating what TTG has up it's sleeve for series 2
1)Only one ending , they should make at least 3 endings
2)Choices didn't matter at all. I think they should make our actons and choices impact important characters in the game and impact ours and their destiny too
3) I would prefer the game in 1st person shooting and some scenes in 3rd because then it will have more action. But that camera was good enough as story telling game.
Pros
1) They story was amazing. I really loved every single character
2) Lee's death. Ok i have to say that got me because i had heard about the 2nd season and i thought it would continue the same story and when i got bitten i was like "WHAT THE FUK ?! NO THAT CANT HAPPEN , BUT THERE WOULD BE SECOND SEASON TOO. LEE WHY?!?!?"Then i searched every youtuber's reaction on that part xd
3)The system requirments. I really like that they didn't make it with high req. so anyone with a basic pc can play it
I think that's all for me. I really enjoyed it really much, good job telltale. Can't wait for season 2
I feel like I just lived a short life as Lee. I tend to get rapidly and strongly attached to fictional characters I like, so I'm glad to know that in this case I'm not the only one.
I predict (hopefully) that Lee, Clem and this game are going to go down in gaming history as a turning point in well-written, narrative-driven and character-based experiences. In a medium dominated by mute space marines, sports franchises, and cartoonishly exaggerated archetypes, the cast here was largely made up of believable human beings.
That said I "only" gave the game a 9/10 for two reasons, one objective and one subjective.
The subjective one regards the characterization mentioned above. While most of the cast felt totally believable to me, that was not the case with Larry and Lilly. There was exactly no redeeming qualities to either of them, they seemed to exist purely to cause discord and strife in the group and were never shown to have any gentle feelings for anything or even each other. Hersel, the cannibal dairy farmers, the crazy dad at the end … hell, even the bandits at the motel had more going on than just "we hate everyone."
My objective issue with the game is the oft-complained about file save bug. In a game where consistency of characterization and the players' choices are so overwhelmingly important, an oversight of this proportion is nearly unforgivable. To be fair I should note that I never experienced these problems, or any other glitches for that matter, but the fact that it's such a common complaint does not say anything good about the coders and QC for that part of the development team. For shame, TTG. For shame.
But based on my personal experience, and my total immersion in the story, I give this season two thumbs up, 9/10, GOTY, and a standing ovation.
hi, i just finished episode 5. wow after finishing i was sitting a couple minutes in front of my screen and thought about what happened before.
for me episode 5 was after episode 3 the most schocking one.
in this episode you have to do a lot of decisions. i am wondering if they all matters?
does it help to cut off lee´s arm? i did´t think so, so i didn´t cut his arm of. did anyone play it twice and can say what difference it makes?
and can you save kenny? or will he die in the radio-sequnce at any costs?
does it matter if you say omid and crista that they should search for a boat, a train or just leave the city?
so many questions. i hope they don´t let us wait to long for season two!
and does anyone else have the problem with the chapter 8 achievement? i did finish the game inclusive the scene after the credits and still i don´t have the achivement for finishing the game.
It doesn't , if you had cut the arm immedietly after the bite without loosing as much blood as if you chopped the arm at Vernon's hole then yes but unfortuanly we don't get that option.
What remains can only be gotten if you choose to not shoot Lee
I voted 10 and this is definitely one of the best games in the world. All the emotions are in this game. I have never played a game that moved me. Thank you Telltale for making such great game.
I think that this first season of the game is an incredible achievement. I have enjoyed playing the series so much more than any game I can ever remember playing, to be honest. Considering how much big money games try to lure you in with bells and whistles and empty rewards, this subtle understated little game has been a joy in comparison... and at a fraction of the price.
I can't remember ever having become so involved with the characters in a game, tv show or movie. The core relationship of Lee/Clementine was so beautifully played out that I felt myself being hyper-protective of her and basing all my decisions around her safety (at first) and keeping her and Lee together, even when that became dangerous. Any secondary character who impinged on this relationship became the subject of my suspicion and dislike (I let Ben die 100% because he ran off in the streets of Savannah when Clementine was in danger)... and the climax. It has, in all disturbing seriousness, affected me more than real-life break-ups and let downs. It was tragic beyond compare... and though deeply cruel and sadistic, written perfectly.
The overall look and feel of the game too impressed me greatly. Even though it had cartoon style graphics, I caught myself more than once cringing and saying "oh my god!" at the more gruesome moments. The controls at first feel slow and clunky, but eventually feel right at home with the rest of the experience... making it play out like an interactive movie, and I feel they help making it a more immersive experience.
I enjoyed it far more than the tv series and while I only gave it an 8 here, I do strongly feel that it is one of the better story driven games ever made.
The only way I feel it could have improved upon the experience would have been a greater scope in the players decisions affecting how the story played out. There should have been multiple endings and multiple future scenarios. I understand why they made it how they did however... in short, so everybody has the same jumping off point for S2... but the point remains. A well-written happy Lee/Clementine ending would have made the experience so much more complete (I don't see why happy endings are so often viewed as bad things these days). I would have played it many times over... whereas now I don't feel as though I want to play it again, as I don't feel like putting myself through the emotional stresses again...
All in all though... massively entertaining. Beautiful game. Looking forward to Season 2... though if Clementine dies I'll be utterly heartbroken.
I was hoping that TellTale wouldn't wimp out and water down the brutality of the Walking Dead when I first learned about the game. I wasn't disappointed. The story and Lee's interactions with the entire cast was awesome. I'm on the fence about the "station wagon guy" though, that was kinda weak. Other than that I loved it.
Props to the artists and the voice actors though, they made this game so easy to love. Looking forward to season 2. Edit: I actually like Lee and Clem more than any of the comic characters, haha.
Is it just me or did the game get all decisions from the previous games episodes and made Lee sound like a monster when he was talking with the stranger it pissed me off after i'd played every episode and then it thought i'd made decisions such as let Clementine eat the human meat, left duck to become a walker among other things.
TWD is definitely one of my favorite games this year. The price per hour and quality of entertainment is another big positive. Although one negative is the wait between episodes is detrimental to a dramatic game when you have a hard time trying to remember who said what two months ago.
Just played them all last night I bought the season pass when it first came out but just waited for all the episodes to be available.
Best gaming experience ive had in a long time definitely, a game which brings a tear to my eye which ep-5 did is a winner well done telltale 10/10.
Very much looking forward to season 2 I just hope it still set around the same story wouldn't like it just to end the way it did maybe even start 10 years later or so with clem being around 18.
