That's for the best. If BTTF, JP, and TWD are the type of game that Telltale wants to make, then King's Quest is not right for them, and vice-versa. Hopefully Activision won't do too many horrible things to the series.
You'll have to be closer to the podium to do that.

Paul Trowe is interestingly apparently very anti-fan games. Particulary The Silver Lining, no idea about the rest though.
RPS: So also with King’s Quest, they’ve been uncharacteristically generous in allowing fan projects. Have you seen the project the Silver Lining?
Paul: The Silver Lining wasn’t available for sale…
RPS: That’s right, yes.
Paul:And in addition it wasn’t really a King’s Quest. In my opinion they did an injustice to the King’s Quest franchise.
RPS: That’s interesting, why do you think that?
Paul: I just don’t think it held true to Roberta’s vision, just like I don’t think the Leisure Suit Larrys that have come out after Al wasn’t involved held true to Al’s vision. And that’s why I refuse to work on a Leisure Suit Larry game if Al wasn’t involved. I refuse to work on a King’s Quest game if Roberta’s not involved.
RPS: Would Roberta be willing to be involved, she’s been out of the industry for a while hasn’t she?
Paul: I can’t speak for Roberta, but I can tell you that we’re currently talking to her and Ken. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/04/10/happy-as-larry-al-lowe-on-remaking-his-classic-game/#more-103200
That's a tad harsh. It's always a good thing when series creators come on board, but franchises can be continued quite well even after the original creators leave. Curse of Monkey Island continued the Monkey Island franchise quite well without Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman (since they left LucasArts by that point) and (mostly) without Tim Schafer.
The Codemasters Leisure Suit Larry games weren't panned because they didn't have Al Lowe's involvement, it was because the developers failed to make them in the spirit of the originals.
I don't think a great new King's Quest is an impossibility, even without the involvement of Roberta Williams (or even without Jane Jensen, Josh Mandel, or anyone else who ever designed a King's Quest game). Adhering to the spirit of the franchise is the most important thing.
With so many good adventure games out there I'd say adventure fans should move kings Quest as well. It's a great part of our heritage but a lot of people are working hard to bring underfunded adventure games to the table.
I think even the likes of BttF & JP are part of the past too. The future is WD and beyond. Who knows how many little side projects are going on behind closed doors. I'd imagine prototypes are being made constantly, some of which may turn into future games whereas most won't see the light of day.
Don't judge them by the corporate words that are said, wait and see what they make.
I was wondering if it it would be possible for telltale to make a KQ game and see what it's like, so I am a little sad to hear this (sorta like when Space Quest 7 never came out.)
The Irony is beyond impeccable... It's rather sad really. I honestly wonder if we will ever truly see a true-blue adventure game from Telltale ever again at this point. As much as I loved The Walking Dead, and look forward to The Wolf Among Us and what the new season of The Walking Dead will bring. This news is rather a slap in the face, more so by the fact that we couldn't even get a response directly from Telltale...
I honestly couldn't give two hoots about the cancellation of a Telltale adventure game at this point. There's 'Broken Age', 'Tex Murphy VI' and 'Broken Sword V' on the horizon. I'm like a pig in shit right now!

Not to mention 3 adventure games form Daedalic Entertainment. Yeah, I'll join your swine club
So people aren't happy because Telltale are doing new things and will continue to do so instead of keeping a certain subset of fans happy by making old things newer using nostalgia as a method of forward planning?

I'm happy they aren't doing KQ. I'm really pissed off they didn't just come out and say it wasn't happening when we all knew it wasn't happening.

Legal issues are probably the main reason why it isn't as easy as that. Also, it's never good announcing that you're not going to make something so I don't know if it will happen. And if it does I doubt it would be much more than a short statement that pretty much has the quotes from the article, with some corporate talk added for flavour.

We (and I should be clear, I say this as part of the community, not the mod team) basically knew seven months ago, when we talked about it at PAX. This was back in September, and we'd already started hearing rumors that the license had expired in June. I'm honestly disappointed that the Telltale PR machine hasn't seemed to learn anything from the Walking Dead episode delay fiasco last year.

Sorry to hear that the PR machine is still broken. That has been the main failing of Telltale in recent years, in my opinion. I guess it's pointless hoping it'll get fixed at all now.

This. I'll be frank, I really didn't pay attention to if a King's Quest game by Telltale was still happening or not; I kind of just went on the assumption. So this is news to me. It's frustrating that they seem to be trying to ignore the fact that it's cancelled rather then coming out and say it for themselves, it's clear they've learned nothing from The Walking Dead when it comes to communicating with your fans...
I'm funding both of those (as well as the Jane Jensen project), and I'm really looking forward to what's coming up.
With all the Kickstarted adventure games, and the combined efforts of Wadjet Eye and Daedalic, Telltale may have already done their part in rekindling the industry's love for traditional adventure games over the past few years, and are now moving on.

Oh, please. Telltale didn't jump start a damn thing. They just tried to suck some additional life out of superior, classic series. First, they try to act like the savior of adventure gaming, and now they tell us to move on and to leave those kinds of games in the past. The whole "we have done our part and it is time to move on an evolve, you don't need us anymore" self-serving baloney from TTG is one reason I am glad that Activision yanked back its licenses from Telltale.

Not saying I agree with their current attitude(I didn't know they were actually saying that themselves until now), but would the adventure game scene of today be anywhere near where it is now without TTG appearing on the scene a few years ago? Sure, it'd be there in some form, but there wouldn't be nearly as much of a contemporary interest.
I don't think that's what they meant at all. Games are changing, and the industry needs to change. Especially a small company like telltale. If they have to make cuts to survive than that's what they need to do.
Comments
I really don't want to see a "modernized" Monkey Island game where Guybrush takes part in endless QTE sequences and dumbed down puzzles.
And it's official.
And it's offcial.
You can hang out at our house.
Damn.
At least we finally know, though.

ok that was funny.

Three games cancelled. Now we have to watch for Activision's IVth attempt ("we have plans of our own").
Which may already be cancelled, LOL.
And thanks Katie, for the invite --

Which is why I said we basically knew. Sure, nothing had outright spelled it out, but the puzzle pieces were all there.
