Thanks, A-One Minivan. I agree with the authenticity issue; I just didn't want to bother resizing the image. :)

Adventure games are archaic. Nobody does that anymore.

Okay now you have to be trolling, Daishi. TONS of games have backtracking in them and are no worse off for it.

If you can't stand to revisit a couple of the same areas a couple of times, then I don't know why you hang out on the forum of an at-one-time adventure game developer, when many an adventure game has backtracking.

WHAT. Nobody ever reviewed a game and said "Wow, all this backtracking was a great feature!"

In fact many people think backtracking is a horrible feature.

    Hi TV Tropes!
"When done badly, backtracking can be one of the purest types of filler there is, with you being forced to go through lots of already-explored areas for no reason other than to extend the play-time of the game. "

Hey reviews of Skyward Sword and all your backtracking:
"Finding the Kiwis, finding the magical apple for the Thunder Dragon, getting all of your equipment back in the Eldin volcano, the tadpoles, finding the imprisoned mechanical robots in that pirate ship, etc.

The game revolves around too much finding/getting something in order to progress. The worst part of it? It's all within three regions which makes it tedious to get them since you're more or less going to the same places more than once. If there were more regions, maybe JUST maybe it wouldn't have been such a pain since at least you would've had new locations to visit while moving on in the game."

    Hey Screw Attack on backtracking:
"It's a painful experience that all gamers have to go through at one point or another, some more punishing than others."

    Hey Giant Bomb:
"Backtracking is often a derogatory term used to describe a situation in a game where the player must return to previously encountered locations in order to continue advancing the game."

    Hey Venture Beat:
"Few things annoy me more than backtracking in games. Never have I come upon a door locked by a key deposited half an hour back in my travels and exclaimed: “Yipee! That last thirty minutes of my life was a roller-coaster ride of epic proportion. I'm sure it'll be as fun — if not more so — in reverse!”

If that is indeed your reaction that forces you to backtrack, then I humbly salute you; all of us are envious of such immunity to bad design decisions."

Metroid is not a puzzle game. In no way can it be considered to have a sophisticated amount of puzzles. When the purpose of a game orients itself toward action and exploration, traversing repeated terrain amounts to a bad design decision. When new and fresh narrative and puzzles arise organically within confined spaces in a game, that's different, because the thrust of the game is to progress not via exploration but by using your mind to solve a series of questions. The forward progress is different. It's why you can backtrack through an area in Layton and it's okay, because every area is oriented around discovering new puzzles. This involves a number of issues including pacing and narrative structure. When a game orients itself around action and exploration it just feels like bad game design.

Hey Metroid Prime 2, let me explore the exact same areas, EXCEPT THIS TIME IN PURPLE AND RED COLORS.

"SpongeBob's parents call them over but SpongeBob and Patrick just fell asleep. Margaret says "Do something Harold!" while Harold says "He's your son, Margaret, he's your son..."

Did Spongebob's mother have an affair!?

In other words, you've never actually completed any of the Metroid games yourself (as you have no appreciation for any of them, this has to be true), and you hate Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, every iteration of any sandbox game franchise, every Zelda game, every 3D Mario game, nearly every graphic adventure game, every LEGO franchise game, and over half of all the RPGs ever made.

And you also hate Metal Gear Solid, contrary to your avatar, because getting higher level card keys which open doors in previously visited areas happens quite a bit in those games.

    ...just to name a few.

Oh yes, Final Fantasy X and XIII were absolutely lauded for their running-down-a-corridor gameplay style and for their lack of any reason to explore anywhere beyond the next story mission area. No, wait--those are among the reasons why they suck.

TOMI:Episode 4 is absolutely the worst episode. I mean, really, why would I want to go back to the first island again? For that matter, Monkey Island 2 is equal to Escape as being the worst Monkey Island game, simply because MI2 requires you to travel to the same 3 islands repeatedly instead of constantly moving from new island to new island. After all, constantly getting to see new terrain is all that matters, right?

You know, I don't see why anyone should ever want to move to the left on a 2D platformer.

I'm sorry, but your argument is completely invalid. Have fun with your collection of rail shooters.

EDIT: I have concluded that you really do have to just be trolling. The fact that you have to backtrack in Metal Gear and yet Gray Fox is your avatar is enough to prove this.

Dig the Max ears! Malice Rotors' version is more authentic though.

Malice Rotors is an anagram of Alcoremortis.

Well, only because I kinda cheated and altered it through the browser html code, not with any sort of Photoshop magic. As a result, there are limits to my power.

So, all these articles going around about how great the humanities are... starting to kinda piss me off. Not the assertion that the humanities are great, no... but the insinuation through those statements that the sciences are inherently soulless by comparison. Because they aren't. Science is beautiful and it examines the human condition in a way that other subjects can only dream of doing.

I feel that it's because all these articles are written by people involved in the humanities. They see a string of numbers, or a graph, or a kinda blurry image and they think "how boring, no one could possibly get enjoyment out of that. Must be progress talking", but to a scientist, that string of numbers is a story. A minimalist story, sure, but a story nonetheless.

Also, nothing... nothing beats the high of being the first person ever to know something. Nothing.

You nevet played Prime 2, so you have no concept of the feeling of danger on Dark Aether as even the atmosphere itself is killing you. Nor are the two worlds exactly the same.

  • For DAISHI

    The “Fourth of July”

    1¼ oz. vodka
    1 oz. lemon juice
    1 ¼ oz. blue curaçao
    ¾ oz. grenadine
    Splash of simple syrup

To make simple syrup, mix equal parts hot water and sugar until sugar is dissolved. Pour grenadine into bottom of an empty Collins glass. Add ice. Gently pour curacao over grenadine. In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine vodka, lemon juice, and simple syrup. Strain over curacao and serve with straw on the side, so guests can place straw into glass and see the layers explode.

    The "Comrade Pants"

    2 oz. vodka.
    Add another 2 oz. vodka.
    Top off with vodka.
Sing Russian national anthem while wearing a USSR surplus cap.
    Enjoy.
