Good point, I forgot about Bob, however I did kind of include him in the skeleton pirates/ghosts who got killed by the root beer. I guess this could be considered different as from memory it is not essential for Guybrush to kill him.
Fair points.
However, personally, I would not consider Guybrush's hand being cut off to be extreme violence. He was not in any pain, there was no blood, and the hand was a violent, troublesome, disfigured, pox-ridden thing anyway. Guybrush was not particular worried about losing it, despite his initial protest, and he seemed quite chuffed upon acquiring his hook hand. I found his hand getting cut off as humour, rather than any dark morbidity.
True, but for a Monkey Island game, it is the closest thing there is to real violence. Still something that was never done before and was actually a real shock for a lot of people.
Actually Guybrush isn't framed. He did commit wanton acts of piracy, even afte the Judge said he'd come down hard on anuy lawbreaker who misbehaved while he was away. Guybrush hs started a r bar fight, dicovered treasure and worst of all sailed away on the only seawirthy ship, after changing the winds.
yeah he's far from innocent. here's the crimes in tales so far that i can think of:
1. the bar fight
2. stole the glass breaker
3. made the fake action figure (forgery, but this can be debated)
4. stole the ship (tho this can be debated if it was actually stealing)
5. stole the treasure from the 2 pirates
6. vandalised the turtle statue thing
there may be more im not thinking of...

lol, yeah the list of crimes just kept going on and on. Though in Guybrush's defense, most of the crimes were against people who were ten times more evil than him like LeChuck and Largo. The guy does have his limits though as he would never murder an innocent person and never commit rape, abduction, torture, or that sort of thing.

Well given that our perception of "violence" differs somewhat, which is good because diversity makes the world go round, we both are right in our own arguments.
So let's hope the next three months fly by so that we can find out once and for all

he kills the La foot guy on CMI by throwing him off a clif
and he acsdently killed jojo sr locked stan in a casket witch would have killed him if he hadnt [INSERT PLOT RESION] to stay alive
I bet we'll see or meet Murray in this episode. He's got a history of showing up in the strangest of places in CMI, and his place in EMI wasn't particularly normal either. That may either be a side effect of being a talking skull (are there ANY natural/non-strange places for a talking skull?) or it could be a counscious choice. And if he shows up, I want him to be hard to spot prior to him saying his immortal "BOO!". Would be fun to actually be scared by him, enough to jump in the chair at least.

It can be argued if the La Foot thing is canon as you can play through the game without doing that. Also, and I might be wrong, but I don't remember seeing the guy actually dying. Yeah, he fell off the cliff, but so can Guybrush multiple times, and he's always fine. And the monkey thing was never intended. He may have caused it's death, but he didn't do it intentionally. To many people, the furthest thing that can go to is animal abuse, but not murder.

Oh no, I agree with you on the violence. Real violence is gory and much more disturbing, but this is the closest thing we can get to in Monkey Island as any form of blood or real gore would lead to a M rating. I don't consider it real violence, but it's defiantly a step up from the previous games violence level.

My memory of the event is somewhat lacking since I havn't played CMI for a while but I seem to remember throwing LaFoot off the cliff was optional and not a necessary story developer but also, Guybrush survived the fall several times (potentially) so it's fair to say LaFoot did as well.
This is merely an observation for arguments sake, I'm not questioning Guybrush's guilt of various crimes over the series. Hell, the man practically steals everything he can lay his hands on while characters are looking the other way.
Edit: Apologies to darknessofheart for the similar post. I was slightly behind in the reading of the thread

I've been trying to think of examples from previous MI games to counter this.
The best I can come up with is the voodoo doll treatment of Lechuck at the end of MI2. Whether or not this counts due to the whole dream sequence ending, or whatever it is, (I never really understood this and havn't heard a "great" explanation yet) is a matter of opinion.
But it is certainly one of the most gory incidences in past MI games. Certainly, in my opinion, more gory than Guybrush's hand being cut off.

4) The seizing was probably legal - you need something to do. Sailing away was probably not. It was the only way off the island.
5) That was acting as a recovery agent for the Vacaylian um, err, Monarch.
I strongly believe it is not a leviathan, but a submarine...after all, the creatures were supposed to take Guybrush to the Spounge...and remember who else was looking for the spounge...and what did he have on the floor.

You mean you strongly believe that what appeared to be a giant sea-creature is not the Leviathan that it is likely we will be visiting the lair of?
Have you seen the journal from the treasure-hunting game? The Submarine in that looks considerably smaller...
True, but for a Monkey Island game, it is the closest thing there is to real violence. Still something that was never done before and was actually a real shock for a lot of people.
Actually stuff like this has been done in monkey island games, just think back to the ending of MI2: Guybrush rips LeChuck's leg off!! Seriously, watch it again, there's blood everywhere (green, but still...), and the dog from earlier in the game comes along and walks off with it! I doubt they would have got away with something like that in this day and age.

What about the poor chef from the Bloody Lip in MI2? The only thing he did wrong was apparently being employed, and Guybrush soon set about ruining his career. And what about the men of low moral fibre? Sure, they may have been lazy and not have many morals, but did that really warrant Guybrush hacking off the peg leg of one of them while they slept? He kidnaps the poor monkey from the bar in order to use as a tool! Surely that counts as both kidnapping and animal abuse? And poor Elaine gets her feelings played with in order to get her to give him the map! The aforementioned Stan being nailed into a coffin (counts as imprisonment and possible torture). Framing of Kate Capsize, leading to her incarceration and imprisonment? All this sounds pretty damning to me...

The whole ending to MI2 is pretty much nightmare fuel--the sequence where Guybrush is being chased around (and tortured, basically) by LeChuck with that voodoo doll sticks out in my mind even more than the gory leg-ripping sequence. Not something I'd let small kids play through. The ending cutscene would just break their brains anyway, soooo...
(I don't think the first two games came with age ratings, at least not in the US, but in later re-releases--at least the one I've got, where they were bundled in with MI3--they were rated 13+/Teen.)
I'm going to post this in the Morgan thread as well, but how's about:
A MI musical song!
The voiceover for Morgan (Nicki Rapp) is a good singer and enjoys using it where she can. I do believe Dominic has done some singy acting in the past too but his arm would have to be twisted. As would Denny Delk's.
Sorry but the manatee seems a bit empty (even with Murray and maybe Stan there) until/unless De Cava shows up. Remember "Three Sheets to the Wind" from CMI? The episode needed a first half to flesh it out from the insult swordfighting.
Yeah, and never has there been extreme violence or dismemberment, but Guybrush still got his hand violently cut off.
While I'm glad people were shocked by Guybrush's hand being lopped off (as that was part of the point), it's nowhere near as gross, to me, as when you remove LeChuck's leg at the end of Monkey 2. That had bone bits and guts and things. (Admittedly represented as about 20 pixels, but still.)

I can understand why you did it. The misbehaving hand was losing scope rapidly. Still gave me a shock, though, as in "did they really just do that?". I'm pleased you did, though! Guybrush now has a hook, much like Indiana uses his whip (and is rightfully pleased with it).

I totally forgot about that. I think I forgot because it was LeChuck and it's expected for villains like him to get what he deserves. I believe this is the first time though that Guybrush has had a lasting injury from something. While there was no blood, it did have a realistic message. If your hand gets hit with a sword, it's coming off.
About the violence thread, i think the last telltale episodes are not s different from the other MI series.
The handcuttin scene was really fantasy gore and not violent.
Anyway i think the WHOLE monkey island serie is for a mature public, not for the presence of disturbing arguments (violence sex etc) but is a game meant to be played by people that gets jokes, cultural refences, high difficult quests etc.
(i know my english sucks:p)
About the love question, i really hope that will be something between morgan and guybrush! Eleine were so cold and selfish, i think she doesnt love back him.
BTW. Didn't it occur to anyone that Jacques could be the thriteenth Monkey of Montevideo LeChuck was trying to sacrifice, washed up somehow on shore, just like Guybrush?
Yes, definitely.
Actually, if you pay attention you'll notice that Jacques is occasionally waving its arms exactly in the same way as the thirteenth monkey while LeChuck is torturing it.
Guybrush even comments "I've already seen a monkey do like that" or something similar.
I think that Jacques is either the same monkey, or is somehow mentally connected to it through the electroshock device.
So many things in the series so far seem to be foreshadows or hints of developing plot lines. The monkeys, LeChuck's expressions, Elaine's behavior, her giving back the ring, De Singe's elixir, all the dialogue in the prologue of chapter 1, the voodoo lady's trance, De Cava's hut and drawings, it goes on and on. I love it! It's probably one of the best ways to tell a story as it keeps you gripped with anticipation and speculation. It's like a series of novels that all have unexplained plots in each one that all make sense by the end of the last one.

This is beginning to sound like Lost and similar sagas!
As Elaine and LeChuck aren't with Guybrush i wonder if we partly also will be able to play LeChuck on the Island and doing some monkey business (i would prefer playing LeChuck over Elaine).
what about that ring? why did elaine give it to guybrush? it just seemed so out of the blue to me. sure, his hand was cut of and his ring with it, but why did she feel like she had to give him hers? I never got that..

Did they have age ratings for games in those days? I swear that counts as alien blood.
