SEGA announced Sonic the Hedgehog 4

edited December 2010 in General Chat
I don't know you guys, but platformer genre is what I like the most, even more than adventure games. And, well, my avatar may be a giveaway, but it was always the good ol' Sonic games that are always my favorite platformers -even to this time, but, well, there wasn't that much of new platformer games recently.

Because of this, the last couple of years was full of rather hopes and disappointments. It was like I was informed about a new Sonic game, only to be informed again about how sucked it was, when it's out 6 months later. A new series of Wii/handheld games? Doomed to be sucked. A game with less characters and more platformer action? Sounded good, but the whole Werehog thing ruined that one. This kind of trial and errors continued, until they hit the spot and announced their ongoing Project Needlemouse to actually be, Sonic the Hedgehog 4. I mean, they're messing with the main series. If they ruin that up, there is no way out. Also, I don't really like when the classics go back to their roots to get their appreciation and respect after how they bit their dust from the 3D storm (*coughmegamancough*) but...

GOD I am hyped. It's said to be episodic (I'm not sure how that'll work) and besides PSN, XBLA and WiiWare they said this game will be out for another platform. If that's PC, now don't hold me.

It's a really good gift that they announced it in my birthday. Because... today is... yes... well... That's the day. Telltale also gifted me a free episode (which is totally by chance but still I<3U TTG). Day's going rad as hell I tell ya.

...anyway, I wanted to hear your opinions, if any.

OH CRAP, THEY'RE TRYING TO ADD A STORY. RUN FOR THE HILLS.

Regardless, I remain with my stance that this is going to suck. Why? Because that's how the cycle works. Just you wait.

    EDIT:
Twenty two minutes 'til they announce something on their site.

    EDIT EDIT:
Oop, Going onto their site and clicking on "Characters" has a locked button about the same size as sonic. Other playable character aleeeeeert.

Well, I don't like platformers in general, and as a kid I was terrified by Sonic, so to this day I dislike him for no good reason.

    But Happy Birthday!

Maybe it's about level packs and etc... The episodic system of it, I mean. You never know. Well, it'll be hard to add a story with only one character and a villain anyway. (They confirmed this too, but they haven't mentioned about Tails and Knuckles. It'd still be hard if Tails and Knuckles are involved though.)

    FFFUUUUUUUUUUU

    It MUST be Tails!

So, they're going a Megaman 10 route with the franchise, huh? Well, not quite Megaman 10, because they're not using retro graphics, and they're erasing a ton of crap from the franchise timeline. But yeah. I am now officially interested. I mean, I enjoyed the two Rush games and Sonic and the Secret Rings, so boiling Sonic down to what is fun and just keeping it at that may very well work wonderfully.

That video could be totally cool, if they didn't totally imitate the teaser of Megaman 9.

If this leads to this same kind of idea to a couple other gaming franchises I know, then I don't care if I see that teaser a dozen times over.

Sonic, meh. Give me a worthy Jazz Jackrabbit sequel!

If the fourth platform is PC I'll buy it in an instant on release.

If it isn't - oh well, they had their chance...

    It's the iPhone.

No big loss... ever since the "Pikachu In A Sombrero" 'shop, I can't get excited for this. I demand my sombrero thunder mouse!

Obviously since Apple is pushing it's iPad to the public, when this game comes out it will be for the iPad, not the iPhone. :D

I'm conflicted. The one part of me wants to try this game because it's Sonic, the other part doesn't because it's Sonic.

You know what I mean. >:

    Sonic 4? A proper 2D Sonic title?

    About. F**king. Time.

Nice. I liked the first two Sonic Advance games on GBA, but a proper 2D sonic on main consoles has been a long time coming.

And episodic Sonic series, eh! This could either turn out really good, or really bad. Hopefully the first one.

Sonic and the Secret rings (they should have sticked with wildfire TBH. In fact they labelled it as such in Argos on the shelve a few months back) Was one of the few sonic games i enjoyed. If it didn't have those annoying compulsory missions like "defeat X enemies" or "Don't get hit!", it would have been a serious contendor for best wii game. I loved the normal levels.

Quick thought: Shouldn't the game be called Episonic? Y'know, because "episodic" and "Sonic"... yeah...

    I'll just be going, then.

    A couple of things.

The old singing SEGA Genesis logo is back.

Also, there appears to be a secret console listed under the consoles the game is available for, with only a box and a lock on it.

However, I HAVE found this image. I don't know if it's real but it's possible.

Woah, thank you, I thought I was the only one who played this incredible game. Jazz Jackrabbit 2 was incredible.

However, no indifference for me, I really want to play this new Sonic right now, even if I had preferred the sprites to be 2D, because 3D on 2D backgrounds are for me a mistake, and 2D animation is just incredibly better than 3D one (more difficult to do also, I know but… have you seen Princess and the Frog ?).

As for the iPhone port, I really hope not. Reason is playing traditional button pad game (and this one will be all about tradition and legacy) without buttons is just another definition of the word nonsense. As I don’t want to play Wii Fit with a sixaxis either. Or Killer Instinct in Natal (what ? they plan to do that ? *paw*).

Anyway, that’s good news from Sega, maybe they’re back, after all… since they talked about Shenmue III a few days ago, I do believe again.

  • edited February 2010
no. i liked it. and the first sonic adventure. all the other 3D sonic games sucked.
  • edited February 2010
Adventure games were likable, compared to the other 3d installments of Sonic. I blame low standarts.

I thought that after that Monkey Island announcement last year, nothing could shock me anymore. Well, consider myself shocked. I am not quite sure what to make of the episodic format that Sega is going for, but as long as the game is faithful to its Sega Genesis roots, contains a healthy dose of platforming, speed, and plenty of Dr. Robotnik contraptions to destroy, I will be happy.

Also, the official web site makes it sound as if there will be a second playable character (it is locked right now). It had better not be some crazy new Sonic transformation, or lame sidekick. Having said that, Tails seems like the most likely candidate here. If so, I hope that he can still be killed humorously like in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and 3.

I agree, there have been too many new playable character/sidekicks(i will make an acception with omega shadow and silver:D) Also, to the people that say the 3D games suck, i dont see why. I dont think you should complain about Unleashed, he is faster and more to his root in the day stages, night is a really good beat em up(although I guess it really isn't Sonic)
  • edited February 2010
I like the fact that they will continue from 3, possibly ignoring and erasing every disaster that happened afterwards. Maybe it started from Sonic & Knuckles, though that was a little forgivable, so I'll just blame Sonic 3D Blast.

Don't know how to feel about the actual game though. Sonic Rush and the Advance games were just average, and this is what it looks like. Also, an episodic platformer? No. :(

EDIT: Oh christ, I didn't even notice until now that they'll be putting the stupid homing attack on there. WHY WHY WHY.
  • edited February 2010
It's not the "homing attack" I believe. It's some kind of a midair jump that all the platformers have these days. Additionally you can give it a direction. Similar to the double jump attack that Hyper Sonic had in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It would work.

Homing attack on a 2D platformer would be entirely stupid.
  • edited February 2010
From several sites: "The game will feature traditional Sonic mechanics like spin dash, power sneakers and whatnot, but also an added 'homing attack.'"

Hopefully it will be like that shield attack from Sonic 3 and just as a little power-up. I am just praying they don't mean anything relating to the homing attack in recent games because that just leaves room open for annoying button mashing and repetitive multiple-hit enemies.
  • edited February 2010
I loved the homing attack in Secret Rings. What's wrong with the homing attack? How is it different from timed jumps?
  • edited February 2010
It would make the game so easy, and even cheap. In 3D environment it'd be really hard -yet buggy- to let the player destroy the targets by bumping on their head, so it's reasonable to have homing attack in these games.

    In a 2D platformer? Nope.
  • edited February 2010
@Dashing, the difference is that a normal jump would require actual preciseness without having the game do everything for you.

I always thought the homing attack in 3D games was just a lazy approach to not having to bother with proper depth perception and physics for a normal jump, and even then the homing attack was just overall unpredictable and glitchy in most of the games. I don't even want to think about the nightmare that was Sonic 2006.

Have you heard of Sonic 1 Mega Mix? It's a fan made hack of Sonic 1 that includes the homing attack (must be where they got the inspiration for it!) and it works really well in that game, then again the game was made harder by having more badniks and "cheap" attacks from enemies.

I want the dreamcast 2...but yes Sonic 4 is confirmed just wished the Dremcast 2 was confirmed..
  • edited February 2010
I don't think this will be very good. I for one didn't grow up with the dreamcast, I had a SNES but I didn't start gaming until I got the 64 when I was 8.

I got Mega Collection awhile back, and the sonic franchise wasn't that great. The gameplay was really simple and though some bits of it were better than mario (it was easier for one, I found mario hard as a kid) it still failed in comparision to platformers like Donkey Kong Country 2.

I think most of the adoration of the old Sonic games is nostalgia. They've dated poorly and the newer entries in the franchise have been an epic fail. I can't see why this would do any better.
  • edited February 2010
^ I don't think the games have dated poorly at all, I can still play them again and again which I sadly can't say for a lot of the games I loved as a kid.

I'm a bit miffed that it's coming out on every platform except the three I own (PC, DS, PSP). If it gets good reviews I'm going to have to consider buying a new machine. I could go for a Wii I suppose and get rid of my old Gamecube but keep the games. Buuut the other two are infinitely better graphically. Ah well... something to think about in six months I guess.

QFT. I've got some Rom Hacks of Sonic 2 running on my DS, and they really are great fun.

The original 2D games are a great mix of speed, exploration and design. The transition to 3D lost at least one of those - Sonic Heroes seemed to wilfully abandon all three, and Shadow the Hedgehog seemed content to shoot them in the face and then run them over a few times - and they've only really stated getting those back recently.

Unleashed was a good step, but going back to 2D hopefully means that they're really keen to rediscover what made Sonic games great. If Sonic 4 works out, maybe they can try going back to 3D with a new sense of direction. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I know, coming up with that will make me seem stupid...

But earlier Sonic games aren't -and should not be- based on speed.
  • edited February 2010
Are you freaking kidding me? That was the whole flipping premise! Sonic is fast! Sure there's more to it and you can't forget what else made it great but when I think about the Sonic games (the 2D ones moreso than the 3D ones, actually, which is probably why most of the 3D ones sucked) I think one thing: "speed." Saying it shouldn't be based on speed just doesn't make any sense.
