HEY! Guybrush has a 3/4 view! Interesting...
...Maybe LucasArts really are taking the time to add to the game this time rather than re-drawing the old visuals and updating the old audio. Now it seems like Monkey Island 2 connects to Curse a little better in terms of graphic style and (apparently) animation, moreso than MI1:SE did anyway.
the original guybrush threepwood looks serious and the SE looks confused
I dont wana be a hater but I can't see any emotion in Guybrush SE face
I think the main problem is, that the original Guybrush sprite basically has no facial expression (I know that there are some special animations for a few scenes, but altogether, his face isn't animated other than the talking animation). Well, with the low resolution of the original sprite you can read whatever expression you want into his face... the high resolution version is based on his existing animation set (although that 3/4-view as well as his smoother frame-rate suggest that some changes have been made), so there can be only one facial-expression. Unfortunately that expression has to fit all situations equally, so it has to be rather neutral.
Ummm...why is the carpet...rushed? I mean, it seems like the designer just rushed things up. The left white triangle shape even has an outline that was not filled! Or...amybe I'm just seeing things... Compare this to other screenshots... it just seems like the whole background was rushed. Even the original image had a reflection for the door, and the SE doesn't.
they either thought it was a cool looking style or they got REALLY lazy with the polygonal lasso tool in photoshop....
As for the reflection of Guybrush... I'm not sure I see it if it is what I think you are talking about... it kind of looks like a Guybrush reflection only its right side up instead of upside down like the reflection should be.

this
but if you look at the original expression although Guybrush is not smiling you can sense some kind of "What the hell!" with that kind of expression that brings an additional humor. if you have a character that is always smirking like the new sprite then that kind of effect is harder to achieve
I really love this latest screen. The light feels a lot more natural and real. Not because the scene is "darker", but because the light feels like it flows naturally and has its bright spots and shadows and everything.
I'm glad the team at LucasArts isn't doing anything crazy here; they're being pretty faithful to the original, and I appreciate that.
The only thing I don't like is how dark and washed out the colors seem to be sometimes in the Special Edition. At least there is a combination highlights and shadows in the last screen of Guybrush and Governor Phatt. I think I like the old Guybrush better too, but that's probably because there is more room for interpreting expressions or emotions when his face is so simple. You think he looks serious. I say he looks scared/confused/disgusted. But there's no mistaking how it looks like he feels when his face is rendered in high definition.

Ok...back to the Penal Zone!
This better?

Nice eye! That is a nice feature if it's truly in game! (I don't see why it couldn't be)
I find it nice that Guybrush now has a 3/4 view!
Oh, and good luck with your CMI-styled sprite then
I think the money they made from TMI being best seller might make them wana XP
Same here, I think the art style of the Special Editions (sharp sort of edges) will really suit that location.
Much agreed, but even if we do see nearly all of the game's scenery, we've still got the voices to look forward to.

Speaking of Stan, I wonder who will do his voice? I like both Pat Pinney and Gavin Hammon equally, but who would the rest of you prefer?
I guess the same guy who did Stan in SMISE.
