[QUOTE=avistew;281757Yes, Fawful, there are things you don't respect about anatomy when drawing in a cartoonish style. However I find it's still useful to know it, even when you choose to do it differently.[/QUOTE]
In my opinion, knowing these things about anatomy enables you to ignore them properly (if that makes any sense) (which I realise it doesn't)
What I mean is, if you know about anatomy then you can gracefully tone down the anatomical features as you draw to achieve a more cartoony look, whereas not knowing about anatomy means you must work up towards a cartoony look with no frame of reference.
Because I'm so bad at explaining things, try to think of it as a continuum:
[unrealistic]
[cartoony]
[realistic]
It's better to work down from [realistic] than up from [unrealistic]
Um... yeah
Edit: In other news, my use of square brackets has messed up the formatting of avistew's quote. Enjoy that.
I'd thought I'd throw in my two cents, as throw studying anatomy for two years in a row has made quite an impact on how I see other interpretations. I must encourage as much reference and studying in order to fully appreciate how the human form is built. There are a number of fine anatomy books out there and just general artistic knowledge books. I'd be more than happy to suggest these at request, because my little diagram is simply a jumping point.
Might I highlight that I'm no expert on the human figure, but I do enjoy sharing what I've learned so far.
Also, can I suggest that the title of this thread be changed? If we're talking about artistic integrity, we should respect the anatomical term for the female breasts and use it rather than slang. However, this is just me, I'm pretty old-fashioned.

I vote the name be changed to organic infant nourishment devise
I think the title was about the contrast between "boobs" and "artistic discussion".
But I feel we're talking about more than just breasts here. We're talking about the female figure, and although breasts are an important part of that they're not the only one.
This being said, I thinks thread's title has more to do with the thread than is average on these forums, so that title is fine by me.
Hey, I just thought of something. Avistew, are you taking those pictures by yourself, or using a tripod... or is someone else taking them of you?
I find it rather dubious to imagine you asking your husband if he'd take pictures of your breasts, clothed or otherwise, so that you can post them on the net and show your fellow gamers how to draw women (and yourself in particular) while admittedly not wearing a bra.
If my wife tried to explain that to me, I'd have a perplexed look on my face... I can assure you of that.
He did take the pictures, apart from the last one, that I took in a mirror. However he did take pictures of me without anything on, but they just didn't "work", the angle wasn't right, etc.
Today he was at work so I took it in a mirror, and to be honest it's much easier when you can actually see what's going to be on the picture.
He doesn't have a problem with people seeing me naked. And here it's not even really naked since it's a public forum.
I guess not everyone would react the way he does, but that's why we got married, isn't he? Because he puts up with my craziness and actually enjoys it
It could be because I'm French. He isn't though, he's Canadian, but he's used to me. When I said I needed pictures of my breasts for showing someone on the forum how they're drawn he said "sure" then asked "inside or outside your shirt?"
I teased him about that, like I was going to keep my shirt on and take the breasts out of something xD
But seriously, I don't think I could imagine doing something like that and hiding it on purpose. I could imagine taking pictures myself because he's not around and posting them and not telling him because I didn't really think about it (it's not like I tell him about every single thing I post here).
But not asking him on purpose, doing it behind his back and making sure not to talk about it? That would feel wrong. I mean, if I need to hide something from him, it just feels wrong (unless it's present-related I guess).
So while I could have taken the pictures myself, it certainly wouldn't have been because I don't want him to know or because I know he wouldn't want me to or anything like that.
Having people who are possibly nude at the beach and having a "nude beach" is different.
I'm fairly certain there is one right next to the Golden Gate Bridge. Why someone would want to be naked on a San Franciscan beach is beyond me though. Even in the height of summer it is freakin' cold along the waterfront.
In fact, I'm pretty sure there are no nudity laws in all of San Francisco. You can be naked all you want so long as you aren't being "obscene" about it.
Are you French or French Canadian? Also, I'm not 100% sure that anywhere outside of England even really exists.
I'm French (from France) and my husband is Canadian (from Western Canada). Neither of us is French Canadian, but in a few years we will probably both be French and Canadian.
I'm sorry, Starchie, but I completely forgot to cover myself in cooking oil before taking the pictures. I guess I can't link you to them then.
I was gonna say... Artists, especially the variety that have gone through formal training, have observed nude folk of just about every shape and size. Reference shots of bare breasts wouldn't be very exciting at all.
Hell, if you do find such images exciting you're either 13 or younger or need to go out some more.

So Highway was posting pretending to be Steve Purcell, then commenting on 'Steve's' posts saying that they were creepy? To paraphrase the Joker: it would be funny if it wasn't so pathetic... oh well, I'll laugh anyway.
Also, I am definitely in favour of seeing a genderswitched Winslow. I'm thinking along the lines of a less obese Voodoo Lady, with a more impressive rack.

You mean "its title"?
Way to go pointing it out and make me look incompetent. *shakes fist*
Just kidding, avistew.
edit: umm... I mean "just kidding" that I'm angry, not that I know how to spell.
I'm sure people who read the subject because of the title aren't disappointed. The thread delivers what it promises.

Where? We do not.

*ahem* ...I'm sure that's all he meant by it. *looks away*
That's still rather impressive, I would say. Steve Purcell himself asked avistew to show him her boobs. Wow, I never thought I'd hear myself say that.
Hey Steve, since you're here, why not show us how to draw some boobs!
Go home, Steve. Go home, go home, go home!
(Mission complete. I finally got to say that. )
As of right now they're
avistew forces the point, avistew is well popular, boobie trap'd, breast physics 101, breasts on the internet!, eyes get poked out, fake purcell, funbags, gravity - it's the law, itsmyelaineniwannitnow, large tracts of land, like ranma but with boobs, mammaries, marry me avistew, pretend purcell, puke in your soup, secretf saw everything, steve purcell is a creep, stonking great tits
wow. just, wow.
Are you French or French Canadian? Also, I'm not 100% sure that anywhere outside of England even really exists.

Hurr hurr

This is the greatest post I've ever seen.
Will, you're a party pooper.
BTW, I've been thinking about drawing female Guybrush, LeChuck, Stan, and Winslow. Should I? :O
By all means. We'll wait for your contributions in the disturbing fanart thread, where they can join the others.
Start with Winslow! He'd probably be the most voluptuous...
... and the most disturbing.
Oh, even if Will hadn't stepped in, Highway was consistently spelling it "Spudnoggin", when Purcell always spells it "Spudnoggen" on the blog.
Also, I am definitely in favour of seeing a genderswitched Winslow. I'm thinking along the lines of a less obese Voodoo Lady, with a more impressive rack.
I'm gonna be a party pooper and say to keep it sfw just to keep the thread going.
