Anyway, was anyone wathcing the game on ITVHD? They crashed at the worst moment possible!
It was actually quite funny at the time!

Haha! I heard about that on Sky news, after reporting that ITVHD had done that, they went on to say how great the SkyHD service was. That's one way of advertising...

Brazil, Argentina, Germany or Italy will win the World Cup, like they (almost) always do. I'm hoping the Netherlands reaches the final though.
  • edited June 2010
If you are living in germany then you might notice a strange thing. There are german flags on cars, windows and even restaurants right now. Normally nobody shows that he is proud of his country over here when there is no big male-soccer-cup at the moment.

    Football, it's called football! :O)

    No it's not.

    this is football.
    the biggest crap ever
  • edited June 2010
Yes, it is, the football you're refering to, is called american football.

I'm sorry, i only understand English.

I would only like to see Argentina win because I really like Lionel Messi. But Argentines don’t even like him because he left when he was 13 for Spain. They call him The Catalan because he went to Barcelona. Then again I don’t know anyone from Argentina, so I don’t have to listen the their fans:p

Thats not true, everyone here loves Messi. There was a brief period of time where the press started bitching about the differences between his performance on Barcelona and then Argentina. Wich is true, but its not his fault, even if he is one of the best football players he still needs a team to back him up, and make the play for him.

But even that one time, it was just the press.

    And he needs god's hand.

This was a joke, just to make sure before someone gets mad on me.

Incase someone hasn't seen this guide before ;)

Thanks, that was awesome! :) I never understood why the USians call their sport football either. Still, it doesn't make sense to call it American football either, as most Americans (especially South Americans) will know that football isn't American football. Handegg makes a lot more sense.

I think it should be called Rugby-With-Lots-Of-Padding.

At first glance, i though you said Rugby-with-lots-of-pudding. Sounds Fun!

Yeah, they don't seem to use their feet quite that often, they're mostly carrying the ball in their hands, even if they do kick and stuff. I also think it should be called American Rugby or something like that, rather than American Football.

(But for the record, I really like "handegg")
  • edited June 2010
Handegg is a good name, but whenever I see clips of it, it always looks more like a hug-athon to me.

If they didn't wear pads, they wouldn't be able to play more than a few seasons without career ending injuries. There are plenty of career ending injuries as it is with all the pads.

Contrary to popular belief, it still hurts a hell of a lot being lifted into the air and driven onto your back, regardless of if you're wearing any pads or not.
  • edited June 2010
Contrary to popular belief, calling American football Rugby-without-pads was a reference to the fact that Rugby is the older game and the two of them are far more alike than footy-football and American football are. They essentially developed footy -> rugby -> American football.
  • edited June 2010
You mean Rugby with pads, not without.

And I feel it goes both way. The pads protect them, but due to them they can go harder on each other.
I think I'd choose American Football over Rugby though. At least they don't get their ears bitten off.
  • edited June 2010
I'd edit my post, but then people would wonder what you're talking about. I don't really care about American football/rugby being mostly just a Giants fan, but I guess rugby wins out. This is due entirely to the fact that I love the "All Blacks" name. It's so accurate!
  • edited June 2010
I meant if I had to choose which to play. I prefer watching rugby. Not that I'm a big fan of sports in general.
  • edited June 2010
Well Denmark lost to Holland, but not really surprised to be honest. :p

And we even scored an own goal. :p

Generally, the most popular field ballgame in a country adopts the name Football. In New Zealand, Rugby Union is called Footy. In Melbourne, Australia "Footy" is AFL (Aussie Rules). Sydney it's Rugby League.

In the USA Grid Iron / American Football. In England its Association Football / Soccer.

So, can't we all just get along?
  • edited June 2010
I hope Spain wins. At least, to have a refund on my new Toshiba laptop...
  • edited June 2010
Football is fun to play, easy to get into and contrary to amercian football you don't have so many interruptions. As a child i loved playing Völkerball.

For the love of whatever you believe in, can't we keep at least one thread on-topic for once?

Anyways, shame about Italy yesterday. I've been cheering for them ever since I was six (wow, uh, 15 years now), and while I don't expect them to win the Cup I at least expected them to do well against Paraguay. Didn't happen. We barely got a draw in and played like flamboyant fish in the first half. A draw is acceptable, I suppose, but I hope they improve their game. We need better striking, for the team to understand what's going in mid-field, and better organized defense.

Bless Canavaro yesterday: at times a complete genius, at times making mistakes a five year old wouldn't. Camaronesi played well but didn't have much room to play in.

I don't want another 2006 but for the love of all that is sacred, at least win the next two games, Italy.

There does seem to be a trend of slow starts from some of the bigger nations. Only really Germany (and possibly the Netherlands, to a lesser extent) are looking like potential champions though we have yet to see from Brazil & Spain. I hope Brazil's match versus Korea DPR isn't as one sided as it's expected to be.

There's a cool bit of history regarding the North Korean team, the World Cup and my local football team. In the 1966 World Cup, based in England, the North Korean team was based in my home town of Middlesbrough where they pulled off a famous 1-0 win over Italy (the place where Pak Doo-Ik scored his goal against Italy has since been marked with a bronze cast of a boot as the old stadium in which the match was played as been knocked down and houses built on the land) and made it to the quarter finals which they lost to Eusébio's Portugal 5-3 (Eusébio gettting 4 of the goals after Portugal were 3-0 down). I would love it if the current North Korean team did something similar to Brazil but that's very unlikely.

You can really tell my American side goes to sleep when I'm watching football. The announcer says "It's 42 degrees here in South Africa" and I think, "What? Isn't it winter for them? That seems really ho ... oh. Right. Fahrenheit ..."

Also ESPN sucks. They listed the match as starting at 4 AM my time, but that's including their pre-game show

Most matches sucked so far, a.o. reasons i blame the annoying Vuvuzelas.

New Zealand managed to keep Slovakia back for the first half. You can tell the Slovaks are the better players, but the Kiwis are really playing like a team, very good communication. They've made quite a few mistakes, but they've managed to save themselves each time. Not spectacular, but better than I thought it'd be. If they keep this up, even if they lose I think they've had a good showing :)

Slovakia just scored:( At least you guys are awesome at Rugby:p

Fantastic end to the match, what a way to get their first ever world cup point. Chuffed for New Zealand, the Slovaks looked absolutely gutted.
  • edited June 2010
They tied at the last second! :D Congratulations New Zealand!
  • edited June 2010
Go Japan! Haha, yeah right :D. At least they won a match this year. I will go out on a limb and say that Spain will win this time, despite their choke-tastic ways in the past.

I would enjoy watching the games a lot more if all the players weren't always rolling around on the ground in "agony" whenever another player so much as taps them, then up and sprinting again 5 seconds later.
  • edited June 2010
North Korea managed to score against Brazil in the 89th minute! They still lost 2-1, but they are literally the lowest ranked team playing against the highest ranked team. Considering the US tied England, and Italy and Paraguay's match was also a draw it seems like there's been quite a few surprising scores in this round. I'm really hoping one of the underdogs actually does make it into the 16 :D

Taps them? You're nice, often there isn't even any contact whatsoever :D

Yay New Zealand! 28 years to the day after our only other World Cup appearance (where we lost 5-2 to Scotland), we finally get a point on the board.

1st equal in our pool after 1 round. ;)

On these trends I have to forecast an Argentina vs Brazil, or Spain vs Brazil final.
I can't see anybody but England meeting Brazil in the semis, and I can't see anybody but Brazil winning that one.

Reckon the first knockout round will be:
    France vs S. Korea
    Argentina vs Mexico
    England vs Ghana
    Germany vs USA
    Netherlands vs Paraguay
    Italy vs Denmark
    Brazil vs Chile
    Span vs Portugal

Germany vs USA should be fun. The Yanks are enjoying teasing us for BP having formerly been a namesake with Britain, i'm gonna love seeing what their internet virals have to say about Germany!
  • edited June 2010
What do you mean "namesake"? If the BP you're talking about is British Petroleum, they are still a British company. I also think it'd be better not to bring up a major industrial disaster in a sporting thread.
