The shot bounced in, but back out against the bar. The German goalkeeper picked it up and simply carried on. TV replays show the ball clearly passed the line and was therefore a valid goal, the referee disagreed and it was disallowed.

Not that it matters, as the German squad was simply far better than the overpaid numpties who play for England and would have still have beaten us. David James was mouthing "f***ing hell!" at the ineptness of his defenders at one point, he ended up being the only line of defence, not the last line.

Unfortunately, the Germans beat us at Valencia just a few hours earlier as well, so the days events are Germany 2, England 0.

It was a goal, and it would've left a bitter taste in my mouth, if that would've been the reason why we won. (BTW, it was incredible how quickly England managed to catch up to our 2:0 lead)

Fortunately we did well in the second half too, and the final score - to me - is a 4:2.

I kept thinking it was French that I couldn't understand. The way the language flows is similar I guess.

Still my teams remains: Argentina, Brazil, Spain. Now that the US is out Ghana is my team to watch. Those guys are the underdogs that no one counted them to be present in the quarter finals. Would be great to see them in the finals as it would be somewht historic, instead of the expected powerhouse teams i just mentioned as favorites to win.

Also i never thouygh Japan was that good to be in the mix.

Now, while I would agree that England deserved to lose (on their overall performance), I don't think it's as simple as calling it 4:2. Just imagine the psychological impact of having a perfectly valid goal taken from you just before half time. Instead of going into the 2nd half with the scores even, they are one goal down. Personally, I would be feeling demoralised and disheartened at that stage, and as a result would play worse than I might have done otherwise!

Even so, we probably still wouldn't have won - but I think such a big (and wrong) decision is utterly unacceptable, and there's absolutely no way we can know what the final score would have been otherwise. (Without, of course, some kind of "What If" machine!)

It's about time FIFA accepted that having a few cameras around the pitch might help their referees avoid bringing anger upon themselves by making bad calls such as this one.

They should know that since the Wembley goal.

Heck, can't those Germans stop about that Wembley goal ... it's gettin on my nerves. Perhaps we could just charge the Wembley goal up with the current one ...

    Oh well...

Anyway, I read this on twitter:

    Q. Why did the chicken cross the road? A. According to FIFA it didn't :-)

Well done to the Netherlands. Good chance of getting to the final now, wouldn't mind if they won it. Either them or Spain for me. Just as long as Argentina or Germany don't.

    Yep

Yeah it was a shock! They took the 5 time world cup champs out falling short of their goal, despite having a team composed of superstars.

Right now the odds are in Argentina, Spain and Germany. The match up between germany and argentina will be a match up of heavyweight in which i consider to be the true finals.

I wouldnt say the current brazilian team are composed of superstars except perhaps a handful of players, despite their great record over the last year they havent faced a top team like the dutch. not in the confederations cup or the qualifiers as argentina were a shambles throughout the qualifying campaign. My £5bet on the dutch winning the tournament is looking rather good, shame it wasnt more :( the brazilians lack of composure after the 3rd goal was a discrace and they got what they deserved

I am not to knowledgeable on football, but i only know what teams are the best. Brazil is a heavyweight but i kinda didnt considered Dutch to be on the same league, i think its still considered an upset by most of the critics. But i have my reservations on considering their win luck. I think like you Brazilian team paid the price by loosing their composure.

I would be very interested on knowing how you regard Uruguay and how good you considered Ghana. Those 2 fought toe to toe kicking the ball in order to net it in, to no avail. When penalty came my heart was with ghana, but sadly i kinda knew Uruguay has a better talent pool than them.

Ghana for me should not feel sad, they outdid themselves, and made history in their nation and i think for Africa too! Kudos to the black stars.

well I think the general feeling was that this Brazilian squad was one of the weakest we've seen for a while, which is mainly down to their previous teams being pure class. Lucio, Maicon and Kaka are clearly all fantastic players but after Kaka's disappointing season at Madrid, Robihno and Elano's failure to perform at club level and the decision to leave such a young exciting player as Pato out of the squad, I dont think many people were too surprised. Many of the dutch players have had fantastic seasons for their clubs-allthough the brazilians know how to up their game when they play for their country so they had to be considered one of the favourites.
I agree, Ghana should be extremely proud. They stood out in a tournament where alot of the big teams didnt turn up. That penalty miss and Suarez celebrating it after being sent off was sickening-At least he has to watch his side lose to Holland from the bench:p

Come on Germany! Dump out maradona and take advantage of their shoddy defence like you did to us

fantastic result! great team performance by the germans, superb counter attacking football which was great to watch. cant wait to see how you do against Spain (no offence paraguay), thank you for adding life to this tournament!

You know, that probably happen when you have excelent players but a coach with 2 working neurons.

    Nice played by Germany. Congrats.

My wishes are with Uruguay now, dont really know how big their chances are, but never the less.

A great match by Deutschland and i'm glad that contrary to four years ago it did not turn into some fighting after the game. It's just sad that Müller can't play in the semi final.

Wow Argentina loosing the way they did was demoralizing for Latin american fans. This round cost us lots of Latin american fans their teams. Our hopes and i believe, the hopes of having western hemisphere champion lies in Uruguay.

Germany practically seems to have no opposition if they get past Spain. Only 3 european teams and 1 south american team. Go Uruguay!!

Trust me, and really trust me in that one, that wasn't that demoralizing for some people, at least here. TRUST ME.

I had locked Argentina for that world cup. If u are latin american maybe and most probably you are rooting for Uruguay!

Deutschland represent!! Now it'll be interesting with Germany vs Spain, although I'll be very excited if it will be Germany vs. Holland. Then I'll have a hard time picking a team XD

Germany to win it against the Netherlands!
That result against the Argies makes the England result not seem so bad now, especially considering the goal that wasn't given. At 2-2 it would have been a very different game (which we would have still lost).

I don't really care if Germany's gonna be the world champion (after all, it's just soccer for crying out loud ;) ), but I really want one of these two options to become true in the finale:

    a) Germany vs Holland or
    b) Paraguay vs Uruguay.

    a) Because it's probably _the_ classic confrontation in (European) soccer,
    b) Because noone would have ever thought of this final combination in the beginning of the WC.

well as paraguay have been knocked out by Spain, that leaves only Germany and Holland, who in truth have played the best football out of any of the teams in this world cup (credit goes to Brazil aswell, they too have put in some brilliant showings)
