Thanks for send us to our destruction (And our dejavoo from france '98)

I'm assuming you mean "déjà-vu". Also, what happened? Did you lose against Brazil in 98?

You bet. And, in the first knockout round.

But, also, Brazil from the '98 was better than Brazil from the '10. And Chile for some reason is better than ever, far I know. Maybe we could draw this time =P.

Yeah, Brazil didn't really impress me today. I realize you want to pace yourself, and North Korea isn't exactly a major threat, but they didn't really give it their all like they usually do. I mean, that's why you watch Brazil, to see 'em get all fanshy.

And maybe you'll get paired off with Portugal instead :D

I think Paraguay is pretty good this year. They end up 3rd in the CONCACAF Classification for some reason, but some people said they end up almost to Brazil levels last year. And I'm not making this up.

    There's some great one-liners in this pre-match interview with New Zealand captain Nelsen and coach Herbert;

"Will you do the haka like your rugby team?,'' a European reporter asked.

"Skinny white guys doing the haka? That would be very intimidating,'' Nelsen said.

Nelsen dismissed the impact of vuvezela blasts on tender All Whites eardrums, saying: "Most of the time you get tired of Ricki barking at you from the sidelines, so you can't hear him now which is an absolute blessing.''

When The Crowd Goes Wild presenter James McOnie asked about Nelsen's attitude to altitude, saying he himself was struggling to walk to breakfast (though the evidence wasn't obvious judging by the strain on his brown blazer buttons).

The Blackburn Rover barely paused for breath in responding: "It's fantastic. It's kind of like you're on a high, isn't it? It takes me back to my university days."

The Kiwi coach unleashed a one-liner of his own when a Brazilian journalist asked if he still had Socrates' shirt from the 1982 finals.

"Yes, and I hope he's still got mine."

I also loved how Nelson was battling back tears during the national anthem, and when Herbert was running around like one of the players after Reid's goal :D You don't often see the coaches acting so exuberant!
  • edited June 2010
That was nothing. Hopefully you can view this outside NZ. From about the 1:45 mark (though it's censored, unlike when it actually went out on live tv).

It's Herbert after the game where NZ qualified for the World Cup (1-0 over Bahrain). Classic.

I love it! :D Grown men and women cheering and jumping and smiling like kids is the best part of the cup. It's wonderful to see professionals who can still find delight in the game, and who don't just treat it like a job. I wish you guys could play England as well. The teams styles are similar; it'd be great to see both out on the pitch at the same time to compare.

My predictions for today: Chile, Spain & South Africa to win.
  • edited June 2010
And Chile won. Awesome. No really. Today, the productivity of the country goes up like 10%.

How was the match anyway? I don't watch the matches because they always lose when I watch them. And everyone here are biased, so, I wanna know what's up ^^!

Chile played very well, with good attractive attacking football and should have scored more than one goal. Sanchez in particular played very well, as did Fernandez and Valdivia.

    Hehh! ^^! Thanks a lot!

What do you mean "namesake"? If the BP you're talking about is British Petroleum, they are still a British company. I also think it'd be better not to bring up a major industrial disaster in a sporting thread.

It's all on topic, after-all it's America who made it on topic with their spiteful virals. (BTW BP hasn't been called "British Petroleum" since 1998, it's like refering to the 13 Colonies).

Chile are looking a good team this year. It's a pity they've been drawn with Spain and Brazil and Portugal next door.

Continuing on teams starting slowly: Spain are hardly playing like superstars at the moment.

I know. According to Justin Beiber you don't use the word "German" in America so expecting you to get non American countries right might be asking too much :P

Well, Justin Bieber is actually Canadian :). I hope the USA at least wins our group. Also, i'd like to add that while Americans my tease the Brits about BP, it is only in fun, and there is no wave of anti-British sentiment here contrary to what some British tabloids would have you believe.

Today we remember something: Normally, we play really good, but we never won a match.

Today, they played really good, and won the match, even if that could be with more goals. Ok, at least they won!

To be fair, they are passing it around brilliantly, but the Swiss are being very defensive and so Spain are struggling getting that final ball in. But I don't think Switzerland can hold out forever.

EDIT: Then again, what do I know! :D

Speaking of Switzerland, I think Chile will fancy their chances against them if they carry on playing like they have and their match against Spain could really be tasty.
  • edited June 2010
Oh... damn, Switzerland won. Good for the Swiss of course.
  • edited June 2010
Damn bad luck (that cannonshot to the crossbar...)
...not to mention the "good job" of the referees...

Switzerland beat Spain? This really is turning into the year of the underdogs, isn't it?

I dunno if anyone else noticed this elephant in the room:
During the Brazil - North Korea game, there were thousands of North Korean fans.

It seems normal, which is why basically nobody else has commented on it, but think about it. I wondered... how?
  • edited June 2010
Actually there's a rumor that they're "Chinese Actors" pretending to be North Koreans. I think it far more likely that they are North Koreans with higher up positions in the government and military and their families. I don't see why they wouldn't be.
  • edited June 2010
oh cool. My first idea was that they've just sent a load of the military over for a holiday... Whatever the answer is it's a bit weird.

    This sprang up in Wellington in the wee small hours after the NZ match;

    Reid_U_Legend.jpg

And it apparently it spoiled a person driving home after night-work who had tivo'd the game and had thus far avoided hearing the outcome. LOL.

I didnt see that coming! But I think it was more because of bad refereeing than good play by Serbia
  • edited June 2010
Bad referee with way too many yellow and a red card, not good playing germans without the luck you sometimes need, so, the next game will be interesting. :O)

I vote we nickname this year "World Cup: The Twilight Zone". Seriously, what the hell is going on?! Oh, and this http://lifehacker.com/5564085/ Supposed to help with the horn section, if you know what I mean.

England v Algeria... at least the pigeon was mildly interesting.
  • edited June 2010
And i still believe that the Vuvuzelas are having a bad influence on the games. :O/
Looking forward to Brazil in this respect.

What a shocking performance again from the English - we just have no passion in the game, and none of the players are playing like they do for their clubs.
Such a shame, as I thought before the World Cup started that we had a team that might stand a chance of reaching the semis, but now we have to beat Slovenia to progress, and I think they will be a much tougher challenge than Algeria who completely stopped us this evening.
Ahwell, there's always the Euros in 2012
  • edited June 2010
Is it just me, or does it look like 1/2 of the teams who are going to make it to the semis will be South American?
  • edited June 2010
England game was pathetic. Darn you USA for stealing all the game goodness for the day.

    Good morning, World.

The country is celebrating another 1-All victory for New Zealand. :p
  • edited June 2010
If things continue this way then this world cup will be remembered by those annoying Vuvuzelas and terrible referees.
  • edited June 2010
Well Denmark lost to Holland, but not really surprised to be honest. :p

And we even scored an own goal. :p

But we won over Cameroon, so I guess we are getting better... But for how long? :p
