Puzzle Agent Graphical Bug on Puzzle 2 with Snowmobile

edited April 2011 in Game Support
I have both of these problems. ESC doesn't work and there's no automatic save after the first puzzle.

In addition, there is a problem with the second puzzle. The background of the puzzle is on top of the rest of the objects so I can't see what's happening.

DirectX has been updated. This problem occurs both in fullscreen and windowed. I don't know what else I could try.

Same problem with the ESC key and the second puzzle
    (I'm playing in wine though)

Same here with wine. Nothing happens from pressing ESC and second puzzle is unsolvable.

Same for me, esc does nothing, can't solve puzzle two. I'm pretty sure I meet the minimum requirements:

    Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 910 Processor (4 CPUs), ~2.6GHz
    Memory: 8190MP RAM
    DirectX Version: DirectX11
    Display NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470

If I were to make a guess, it's probably some problem with the way the information is sent to the graphics card, which could be specific to certain video cards or driver versions. I'm having the same problem with my GeForce 465 GTX, so if it's a general problem with certain NVidia cards or drivers, that would explain the graphical issue.

    Specs: Core i7 @ 2.66 GHz, 6GB RAM, Windows 7 64-bit, GeForce 465 GTX (driver version 257.21).

I've attached DxDiag outputs from both the 32-bit and the 64-bit version.

For those of you unable to complete the second puzzle, could you attach a full dxdiag? Go to your start menu, and type dxdiag into run, then when that window comes up click the "save file" button on the bottom right of the window.

Same problem here. The second puzzle doesn't work. I've a GTX 480 on Win 7 64.

    Attached my dxdiag

Just realized this forum existed, sorry...

    Hello,

I got the game today and there are no logs, lights or other symbols on my second puzzle. I could not figure out a way to leave dialogue with the old man, so I had to shut the game down externally and now I would have to start over to try it again.

    Anyone else have this bug?

    My system:

    Win7 64bit
    GTX 480
    Q9550
    4GB DDR2 Ram

    Played in 1920x1200 resolution.

    ____________________________________________

I tried it again, same issue. Tried it windowed at a lower res, same issue. I see that the paper-clipped piece of paper is supposed to be on top but is hidden by the grid image... tried clicking all over to make it appear: nothing.

Anyone have any ideas? I can't play the game.

Someone commented on this in an unrelated thread and posted this picture, which applies to me as well:

Hey guys, while this puzzle is up could you hit alt+Enter to try to switch to windowed mode? Does that fix the problem?

Nope... No good... Still not working.

No, doesn't fix anything. I tried windowed mode before, as said in my OP.

    Arg!

I can't get you a dxdiag output (linux), but for what it's worth, here's my laptop's specs:

    Linux 2.6.32-23 (64bit)
    Intel Core2 Duo T7500 2.20Ghz
    2.0 GiB RAM (0.9GiB available)
    GeForce 8600M GT (512MB mem, driver v256.35, vbios 60.84.50.00.02)

The new Sam & Max season works fine.

So far it looks like everyone here uses NVidia cards, if it's a bug in the driver, that could make sense: the linux and windows driver share the same code.

Still, a workaround/fix would be nice.

No solution yet? I'm dying to play this game and i can't because of a freakin weird bug.... Pretty please, Telltale?
  • edited July 2010
Yeah, since it actually prevents a lot of people from playing I think we need some consistent statements that it is being investigated at least.

We are working on it, but we haven't been able to reproduce it in house yet. Working on getting one of those video cards today.

Well there's 40 sales down the drain... sorry about that! Keep us in the loop, thanks.

Because they can't test all their games on all possible computer configurations. There's just too many possibilities.

No news on this issue yet? :(
  • edited July 2010
It's surprising the 480 is the cause, if true. I have had a newer GPU break a game like... well... never? Ever? In 20 years of PC gaming.

Drivers yes, the actual GPU no.

It's highly doubtful that the GPU itself is to blame - it's much more likely that there's simply a bug in the driver which is only triggered on specific cards (in this case, the 4xx series).

I also have this problem with a GTX 470 on Windows 7 64-bit.

I have the same problem (linux, GTX275). The logs are visible as you drag them around, but are otherwise invisible.

same exact problem, running on a mac book pro, through parallels with a nvidia 330m gt.

Why are you using the Windows version? :) Does the Mac version have the same problem?

and come on Telltale, we want to play the game :(

Just an update, these cards were backordered, but ours should be arriving mid-week. Not sure how long it will take to fix from there. These problems tend to be a bit... persnickety
  • edited July 2010
It looks like a possible Z-order issue; I can see the paperclip and a little attachment which is apparently supposed to contain the logs, which appears to be under the map, but I'm guessing that's supposed to be *over* it, instead of under. I'm seeing this with Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) and Wine 1.2-rc6 on two different machines, one with nVidia ION graphics and the 256.35 nVidia drivers, and the other with an nVidia GeForce 8600GT and the 195.36.24 nVidia drivers. (I wouldn't mention it, but since it appears to be a common problem with Windows users as well, thought it might give a clue.)

Yeah, it's definitely something with the scene priorities, we just don't know why one particular card would draw things in the wrong order. Just won't make a whole lot of sense until we can see what's going on under the hood.

    Some more info from me:

I have a Windows 7 64-bit partition and a Ubuntu 10.04, on the same machine, which has an Nvidia GTX275 card. I've tested the game on both partitions.

The first time I ran the game, it resulted in a complete and instant system crash on both partitions; an instant black screen with the monitor going in stand-by.

The second time I ran the game on both partitions, it worked.

The first puzzle is okay; but on Linux, and only on Linux, the second puzzle suffers from the z-order issue, where the piece of paper with the logs are clearly placed beneath the field where the logs are to be placed. Still, the logs are visible when you drag them around. (Trial and error to find them first).
  • edited July 2010
I can drag the logs, but they are not visible unless I drag them above the map.

    Nothing yet?
Anyone tried any other older driver?

    Same problem here.

    Linux 2.6.32-23-generic #37-Ubuntu
    wine 1.2-rc6

    NVIDIA driver version 195.36.24

Can we get some sort of update? I assume the card's been at the office for a couple days now...

We've figured out the root of the problem, but rather than being one system wide fix it means a bunch tiny little fixes. Basically the problem you saw in that second puzzle extends through the bulk of the game and they all need to be found and fixed individually. In short, it's going to take a little while :(
  • edited July 2010
Good to hear you've found what's wrong. Unfortunate that the problem is so many little things instead of one big thing, but at least a fix is in sight. :)

Well, I just downloaded the game and was all happy and gay about starting to play, but then I hit this bug and then ow... Well, I don't mind waiting, but how do you guys usually notify when these bugs are fixed? Will you send an update on this thread when the new version is ready for download?

    Cheers!

Glad to hear that first part of it. Less so the second. But I will let you know I trust you guys enough that I bought the game full well knowing I would encounter this problem.
