All you need is Warband. Really. WFaS is the most recent but Warband is still priced the highest. That should be an indicator for you.

Ah, thanks for mentioning that. Completely forgot it, since I (and, I estimate, 97% of people with Steam) already own it.

Out of curiosity, do you know if it's 'free-to-play for a couple days' or 'free forever, but you have to grab it during the next few days'?

I was one of the few that didn't have it I guess. I try to not get tempted with anything that has first person camera views as I get violently ill fairly fast, but it was free. As far as I can tell it's free for good, but there really isn't any info I've seen on it other than the "download for free" links at http://learningwithportals.com/
  • edited September 2011
we will see. I linked the site to a friend that did not have Portal yet. And she was happy.
So thanks for linking that here yesterday.
  • edited September 2011
Indeed, I didn't have Portal either and I'm always happy to get games for free.
  • edited September 2011
Wow. That's me and my '90% of the universe owns Portal' theory dead in the water. Thanks guys.
  • edited September 2011
Also, it's not "free to play for a couple days". For one, Valve has stated that it's add to your account and keep. For another, the "free to play for a few days" games are automatically added to your Library, as opposed to the "Free for a couple days to keep forever" promos. For singleplayer games, free to play for X days promos just don't make sense.

Today's daily deal is a classic: The Whispered World
Really good adventure game with a compelling story. I love this game mainly because there is such a great array of dialogue in it. Pretty much any item-to-item and item-to-world object combination has a unique response, and most of those lines are really funny.
I also love the difficulty and overall feel of it. It's challenging and definitely worth the purchase in my opinion.

Right now it's off 75% for €5/$5 (same price is listed on Steamprices).
And it's £3,75 if anyone actually gives a damn about that...

And the Paradox thingie has Magicka for 75% off too. (€2,49/$2,49 or £1,99)

    Whole Magicka Package: €6,24, $6,24 or £4,24

EDIT: Gah! Ninja'd! Curse you, caeska! Curse you!

Today's Daily Deal is The Whispered World. A brilliant adventure game, it's an absolute steal at £3.75 / $5. I urge all who don't already own it and are fans of the genre to snap it up immediately.

Today's Paradox Price-Cut is the Magicka series. Lot to get through here, so bear with me.

    Magicka (Original Game): £1.99 / $2.49
    Magicka - Vietnam: 87p / $1.44
    DLC:
    Final Frontier: 49p / 74c
    Frozen Lake: 39p / 49c
    Marshlands: 44p / 49c
    Nippon: 14p / 24c
    Party Robes: 39p / 49c
    The Watchtower: 39p / 49c
    Wizard's Survival Kit: 14p / 24c

Magicka Collection (all of the above): £4.24 / $6.24

There's also a new Magicka release that's not on offer, but kinda cool - the Magicka: Gamer Bundle, which is three new robes (completer with gear) inspired by games the development team liked. The Zombine one is weird, but my favourite is the Purple Tentacle one. You really need to go check it out, it's hilarious.
  • edited September 2011
I would so love to buy Magicka but I cannot play it on my PC.
Also the amount of DLC for the game really puzzles me. Also the purple tentacle costume is wonderful.

What I thought of TWW can be read in this forum.
I would still highly recommend it to anyone who doesn't have it.

Today's Daily Deal is iBomber Defense, a tower defence game with strategy elements. £1.74 / $2.49
  • edited September 2011
And the Midweek Madness is up already.

They have 2 package deals with 5 games each; the Indie Strategy Bundle and the Indie 2D Bundle

    The Indie Strategy Bundle includes:

    Anomaly: Warzone Earth
    Defense Grid: The Awakening
    Revenge of the Titans
    Sanctum
    Sol Survivor

    The Indie 2D Bundle includes:

    BIT. TRIP RUNNER
    Nightsky
    NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits
    Swords and Soldiers HD
    World of Goo

Normally those 2 packs are €53 and €47 respectively, but you can now get both of those for €9,99 each. Pretty good deal it seems, but I don't know anything about those games. It's indie games though so don't expect too much. Oh and Steamprices is messed up so I can't look up the different currencies.
  • edited September 2011
As you may have guessed, both Bundles are $9.99. That's £6.99 for Youkayvians (say it out loud).

There's actually another Midweek Madness - Two Worlds II. Half price at £12.49 / $24.99.

Oddly enough, there's a new expansion for 2W2 (Pirates of the Flying Fortress) that costs as much as the game itself! It better be one hell of a DLC pack.

EDIT: Oh hey, this is the 100th post in the thread. Woo!
  • edited September 2011
Have Two Worlds 2 on my wishlist, but I am apprehensive about it, I got Two Worlds 1 on GOG but the game is really bad.

But then again, I have a lot of other games I need to play first so I think I will let this one pass me by. :)
  • edited September 2011
IGN gives Two Worlds II a 6.0

Angry Joe praises it for being playable (unlike the first game), and gives it a 7/10 ("a great game") for RPG fans who are willing to overlook the "rough edges."

    Bennett the Sage agrees.

They all seem to say that it has a lackluster story, bad character models and poor voice acting, but it has lots of content if you can get past the issues. They also complain about gamepad controls and frame rate but they're playing it on 360, not PC.
  • edited September 2011
Speaking of Two Worlds and mediocre RPG games, today's daily deal is KrissX, "a captivating and relaxing mix of puzzle game and word game".
It has achievements on Steam too it does.
    50% off at $2.49 or £1.99.

Two Worlds 2 is cheaper on Direct2Drive if you're interested in getting it. Though it isn't steamworks.

I personally quite enjoyed the game, until I got to a massive level increase where enemys started taking massive chunks out of my health.

Today's Daily Deal is Lucid. £2.49 / $2.49 (Grr. Still, made up for with the one below!).

The Weekend Deal is up now, and it's the Company of Heroes series.

Company of Heroes: £1.39 / $1.99 (absolute bargain at that price)
    Company of Heroes - Opposing Fronts: £1.99 / $3.99
Company of Heroes - Tales of Valor: £1.99 / $3.99

...or the entire Company of Heroes series for £5.39 / $9.99. Which is, er, 2 pence/cents more than buying them all individually. Oops.

There's also the Sega Weekend (despite it being Thursday). Several games are on offer. Here's the list:

    Alien vs. Predator (2010): £3.74 / $4.99
    Alpha Protocol: £1.50 / $2
Dreamcast Collection (Crazy Taxi, Sega Bass Fishing, Sonic Adventure DX, Space Channel 5 Part 2): £3.74 / $7.49 (yay)
    - Incidentally, all the individual items in the Dreamcast Collection are £1.49 / $2.24 on their own -
    Football Manager 2011: £9.99 / $9.99 (grr)
Genesis/Mega Drive Collection (too many to list, here's the page): £5.49 / $7.49
    - Incidentally, all the individual items in the Genesis Collection are 49p / 74c (with the occasional 99p / $1.24) -
    Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing: £7.49 / $9.99
    Space Siege: £4.99 / $7.49
    Stormrise: £7.49 / $9.99
    The Club: £4.99 / $7.49
Total War Mega Pack (again, here's the page): £11.90 / $17
    - Incidentally, all the individual items in the Mega Pack are half-price on their own -
    Total War - Shogun 2: £14.99 / $24.99
    Universe at War - Earth Assault: £4.99 / $9.99
Vancouver 2010 - The Official Video Game of the Winter Olympics (actual title!): £9.99 / $12.49
    Virtua Tennis 2009: £4.99 / $4.99 (grr)
    Virtua Tennis 4: £9.99 / $14.99

...and the entire SEGA collection (all of the above): £59.99 / $79.99

Alpha Protocol for $2?! What the hell, I spent 50 bucks on that when it was released. And it's not even that good...
  • edited September 2011
It should DEFINITELY be noted that the two Sega system packs ALSO have their individual titles discounted. Because the savings for buying the Dreamcast pack as a whole is just a dollar and fifty cents, it's probably best to buy the individual titles you want for $2.24 each. I certainly don't care for Sonic Adventure or Sega Bass Fishing(really? Of all the titles on the Dreamcast....really?), so losing out on the "package" deal isn't a problem for me. The Genesis pack saves you more as a package deal, but if you only want a few then the games are less than a dollar each.

Alpha Protocol for $2 is a steal and if you can play it and DON'T get it you are a bad person. No, Alpha Protocol is not perfect. It has rough edges to it, certainly. But it's a very engaging, has a well-written narrative, responds greatly to your choices and actions, and overall I felt it was far better than critics gave it credit for.
  • edited September 2011
I got the Genesis classics pack 4 (I already have #2 and the ecco games from pack #1 and 3) No need to get the other games.

And that, my friend, is why you should never pay full-price for games.

I did mention this, actually. It's in the incredible small text on my previous post. Probably could have made it clearer, but hey, good enough for who it's for.

You were fast today, well done.
Is Nancy Drew like an adventure game by the way? Is it any good? What are the puzzles like? Is it a good story?

Those are adventure games (mostly) for girls but they all have a certain charme, some unique puzzles for the game and are quite fun. The graphics and puzzles are quite simple but they have some harder ones too. They are also quite short. Let's say 2 average TTG-episodes.
There should be some demos on Steam (Try the legend of the crystal skull demo, oh and the Phantom of Venice demo). I have no idea why they didn't discount the whole series. I'd have bought some of those episodes but don't care for the Trail Of THe Twister at all...

The Nancy Drew games by Her Interactive are adventure games, though with sort of a unique flavour. I've played most if not all of them, and there's a fair degree of variability in the quality of the story and the type of puzzles involved.

Trail of the Twister is not one of the better ones. You play as Nancy, who has been assigned to help storm chasers with their research (and investigate some strange goings-on on the sly). This means there's a lot of busywork kind of stuff, tasks set by the researchers that you need to complete: driving around taking pictures of various weather patterns, ordering files based on a given symbolic system, that sort of thing. Some of the puzzles can be nicely cerebral/challenging - it's not a total cakewalk all the way through. You WILL learn a decent amount about weather! Dialogue is of the "click through everything" variety (no dialogue-based puzzles, not much real scope for choosing different options).

I wouldn't particularly recommend the game, and it's certainly not one of the best entries in the series, but it's hard to go wrong for a couple of bucks if you're interested in trying one of them. For that price I would dive right in if I hadn't played this one already.

At least you don't need to make food for the hotel guests in that one. It's an average episode but there are a lot better ones in the series.

Oh and also: Caution the Dossier games of the series are not really adventures.

Agreed! Less mandatory minigame-style crap and more thinking-type stuff is always welcome.

On the whole I'd say it's worth it - about the cost of a cup of coffee, but will last longer and is probably just as enjoyable (depending on how much you like coffee I guess).
  • edited September 2011
I just got it since I didn't own a single game in the series before. I played the demos and watched a lot of Let's Plays on Youtube though.

Ah, but is it worth the price of coffee when Alpha Protocol and Space Channel 5 are ALSO the price of coffee? What do you do with your coffee dollars THEN?
