The Kickstarter/Crowdfunding thread

edited December 2014 in General Chat
Since there's probably going to be a fair few Kickstarter projects that aren't done by Tim Schafer, I thought it might be nice to start a separate thread for all the little games on Kickstarter that don't get as much exposure.

For example: Feeble's Fable: The Legend of Runes by Atomic Chimp Games. Another point-and-click adventure game, but this one is going for more of a cute and charming feel. It definitely looks interesting, though they've nowhere near the backing they need. :(

And another: Americana Dawn by one guy, Max K. Lambert. It's a freeware retro-styled RPG about the French & Indian War and the American War for Independence. Kickstarter page is a little bare (he doesn't actually say what he needs the money for, for one), but it looks like an awesome game.

So let's see what other Kickstarter projects you think is worth shining a little light on!

I dunno. It's not really breaking any ground or anything. If you're into classic platformers, there's that Core of Innocence game. There's a soundtrack and it's already going to be funded. Doesn't really seem to be offering anything more than any other indie platformer though. Eh. Saw it, saw it was going to be funded, thought I'd throw it out here. Looks like the guy has been funding it himself, thought I could at least share it.

I was browsing the "video game" section of Kickstarter, and I found this adventure game project about Sherlock Holmes that might be interesting :

    You better.

I feel the need to bring the project to people's attention.

    The Banner Saga

It is a RPG/Turn-based strategy... thing based (loosely) on Norse mythology by some former Bioware developers who left to create their own games. It's animated in a 2d, Disney-esque style, and overall looks extremely interesting.

Do want. Need more money first, though. I'm now broke.

    No Steam? Bah! Not interested.

    :p

More seriously: £10K? That seems... a lot.

Good. What do you think I should aim for? My artist will run me about 2500 and studio time for voice acting will be about 50/hr.

Also, yes! I must submit it to Steam. These are all things I need feedback on so I don't miss anything.

    Ha Ha!
I'd start a kickstarter if I was more experienced!
(after all I have to actually make a 100% finished game first! XD)

EDIT: Also not being in the US probably doesn't help either... :/

Why are you spending so much on studio time anyways? Get on a voice actor website and get people to record the lines directly for you, you'll need to maintain consistency in terms of EQ levels and blah blah blah but any voice actor worth their salt will be able to do this. You have to be well coordinated but a lot of studios and VA's are going this route now.

It's 2012, recording studios are for Pixar movies and Lady Gaga :p

I must totally agree. So far, this and DFA are the only things I've backed on Kickstarter.

Damn international S&H raining on my parades.

(not only that but the UK has customs as well. So its not worth it in the end unless you like to gamble)

Do you mean a project or a new website? Because you have to be a US citizen to start a Kickstarter project.

    Yes.

    Ok. :P

There's actually someone at my college who is working in a startup that is aiming to create a European Kickstarter-esque website, so hopefully there will be something soon.

Well, there's ulule. Not too much interesting there though.

Well, since you mention that particular site, I'd like to draw your attention to Assassin's Creed: Artefact II.

    I meant website, yeah.

I'll keep an eye out on that ulule. Though it seems quite a lot of the projects are in other european languages.

Seirra comeback on now, first Al Lowe & Josh Mandel with others as part of Replay Games and now Jane Jensen's doing a Kickstarter, with an interesting model as well.

These things are coming fast... A new Kickstarter that is close to my heart has just started today: Shadowrun Returns.

It is a oldschool RPG based on the oh-so-awesome Shadowrun game system. Even if you have no idea what that is, give the pitch video a watch, it is very well done. It will also come with a level editor if you're into that sort of thing.

Yet another project I'm considering backing: Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective Adventure Mysteries. I did find the pledge video to be enjoyable as well.

$50 000 pledged for Jane Jensens upcoming games, $250 000 is still needed. Come on people, open your wallets. :)

The project site is updated with information about the concepts, and how they are going to handle the difficulty level.

"What kinds of adventure games will they be? Hard? Casual?

Our plan is to have a "casual" and a "true adventure" option at the start of the game. This will allow us to provide an easier path through for those who are not hard-core players -- while allowing our 'true adventure' path to be uncompromised (and by uncompromised we mean classic Sierra-style puzzles). We're looking forward to beta-testing with our CSG members and tuning the game."

I have a feeling that this will be one that gets its funding more gradually as more information is released regarding the project. The initial pitch was a bit vague, and it hasn't seemed to get a ton of media attention.
