Indiegogo isn't Kickstarter, they don't need to reach their goal if they are set up as "flexible funding", which this one is(that's why none of the rewards are tied to the success of the project).
Speaking of Indiegogo, the funding of the Tesla musesm reached 1/2 million in 1 day, and they ran out of tiered prizes. There's a twitter discussion going on now about what new tiers they can add.
The first environments look great... the characters look ugly and soulless. I hope that's not the final design. The worst thing at the time, however, is that the tiers don't even speak of a DRM-free version for the backers. THAT at least should be remedied very quickly.
Errrr... corrupt, from what source did you get that link? The kickstarter is having quite a surge at the moment, has it been advertised somewhere important?
I like the look of the characters. I think when not talking to the camera they look fine. When they talk to the camera while standing next to real people they look weird.
That's a lot of money. Is it really that expensive? A couple of fan boys made Broken Sword 2.5 and that game was pretty amazing.
Nicole's voice doesn't sound pretty enough to me. It sounds like an old woman to me with false teeth . I'm sorry if it's the original Nicole. I don't know who plays her yet. If it is then I back it all the way. But, her voice isn't very pretty from this preview.
And the cover art is cool but it makes George look like Dolph Lundgren
I like Dolph but I didn't picture him being George Stobbart.
His in game model looks like a tall, over grown 13 year old. But I think the sketches looked pretty nice.
I'm still very excited and will be playing this when it is made.

Sure. Those fans didn't need to get paid. The voice actors don't work for free either (normally).
Next point: Which engine do you use. Do you develope one on your own or do you license one that already exists. That shit costs money too.
Aw man, I'm in debt from the previous kickstarters. I'll back this one at the minimum, but this one I'd really love to back at the $100 level. I really love the first two Broken Sword games.

From the actual page itself (not the list of tiers):
Download of Broken Sword - the Serpent's Curse - DRM FREE - PC (Windows and Linux) & Mac
Not sure if you already saw that or not, but there you go.
And godDAMN this is annoying! I'm seriously trying to cut back on my spending and they have to go and pull this? Assholes. They knew. They knew I wanted this. They KNEW I'd back it. Gits. It's just a matter of how much I pledge, and that Gold Member tier is looking so tempting... Gah!
I understand now, that would cost a lot. You have to pay writers, graphic artists, voice actors , directors. There is alot of people involved in this project , and some of them will be dependent on the salary they earn from this project.
What an inspiring project, 20,000 dollars or so since I've last posted.
I think the prizes are kind of silly, nothing worth 10,000 dollars. But I guess the real award for people who are that enthusiastic, is to see the game finished and to play it.
I'm really excited but not too crazy about the bizarre in game models. Broken Sword always had realistic animation, this is a little too cartoon for me.
In the first update of Broken Sword 5 they note that they nearly reached 40% of their goal on the first day. Pretty impressive. It must help that they are making a game in an established franchise as supposed to starting from scratch, like many other Kickstarter projects have been forced to do. I think this one will get plenty of money, people know what they are signing themselves up for.
I think i'm gonna put some money aside and back at the $100 mark. Broken Sword means a lot to me, plus the goodies seem really nice.
The character models are dead on... until it's time for a close-up. But maybe they'll tweak that with feedback, i'd certainly welcome any delays with open arms if it meant a better game.
To anyone wondering about the character models, this quote from their latest update says it all:
Some people asked about the visual look of the characters. They are initially created as 3D models, animated by an animator and pre-rendered to look cell shaded / 2D. When animated at 30fps they look fluid and solid. We are pleased with the result so far, and this technique allows us scope to adjust until we're 100% happy.
Basically, if they're drawing the backgrounds by hand, they need to do the characters the same way or there'll be a massive disconnect between the two. It's the same (admittedly minor) issue I have with the Runaway games, but here it'll be in an established series and it'll just stand out even more in comparison to previous entries.
Doing 3D cell-shaded models may be easier on the team, but it just doesn't fit the Broken Sword series.
The Runaway series got that under control. The third part even excelled at integrating the 3D characters in the 2D environments... while they're looking misplaced in those first Broken Sword moving pictures.
It's odd that they mention how fluid the animation is... that is actually the issue I take with it. The facial close-ups in particular seem TOO fluid somehow, reminds me of Flash animation. I can't quite verbalise what it is, just feels "off". Maybe it's what you guys are saying about the character models not integrating well with the hand-drawn backgrounds.
Also, in the Kickstarter video (at 5:35) you see them hand-animating 2D drawings of George. If the characters are actually created as 3D models, is that bit just visual filler or something?
At any rate, it's going to look a damn sight better than the 3rd and 4th games.
George's face seems devoid of feature in closeups. The side profile shots look really good I think, so the bulk of your adventuring experience is gonna be quite satisfying.
I really hope they go for a more low-key tone than the third and fourth games. Broken Sword 1 and to a lesser extent two were gently paced things with the odd scuffle here and deception there that led to a fantastical reveal of the true nature of the mystery. However in later installments they have you, right off the bat in a plane crash in the jungle on your way to a meeting with a mad scientist with a doomsday machine. :-/
A good adventure game delivers plenty of emotion and happenings between characters - supported by facial expression. But, seriously, Nico and George have wayyyy passed the interest threshold of their on/off relationship. If Broken Sword 5 is all about the puzzles and not about the disappointing attempt at finding something tellworthy in the Nico-George-relationship, I'd be content... and the animation in that area would be of less relevance.
I've been artistically inspired lately and this project inspired me so I've been working on various art works and made a broken sword one. I'm new to color with traditional media but I'm learning kind of fast I guess. I need to learn to draw my stuff a little better before coloring.
Anyways, I agree about emotions in a game. I think the first two games were very animated , had a Disney film type feeling to them. And I think that animation quality sets a standard for the first two games setting them apart from the 3rd and 4th. But the voice acting in the 3rd and 4th games is a major save. And it will be in the latest installment. The facial animations in 3 and 4 are probably better than this game. And that doesn't necessarily say a whole lot. But I think the voice actor, during game play is really going to help pull this project through. I love the voice of George Stobbart.
Over at the Project Giana, uh, project, they've announced the following:
- If you add $10 on top of your pledge, we’ll provide you with an additional gift version of the digital download with a special splash screen announcing your generosity.
- If you add $20 on top of your pledge, we’ll add a DVD of the game to your rewards (in a properly illustrated case, of course), with free shipping worldwide.
In case you needed an additional push. I'll probably end up going for that DVD, since it's free shipping. I like physical things, sue me.
Comments
Sure. In one third of the allotted time, they already have 4% funded. You'll get your DVD for sure.

Backed! Looking forward to this one
And quickly counting

It's moving so fast.

And I'd be in regardless of my critique of how the characters look.
/edit: They'll beat Project Giana within the hour, which I find a bit unfair. Go Project Giana!
I liked Nico on the cover though.
ZOMG TAKE ALL MY MONEY !!!!!!!1!!eleven!!2
I am definitely backing this... just need to figure out at what level.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if they do, about 16 hrs in I think and already at $127,000, that's over 30% of the target!
Also, woooooooo, Broken Sword!
The character models are dead on... until it's time for a close-up. But maybe they'll tweak that with feedback, i'd certainly welcome any delays with open arms if it meant a better game.
Also, the hands need more work. But I'm sure they know that.

Should really give the kickstarter the kickstart they need.
Why the fuck was that not an option in the first place?
Yeah, I'm not so sure I'm on board with this one. ...yet.

...Okay, "no way" is pushing it slightly, but dammit I'm NOT backing down on funding Anomalisa.

There's a demo of the game here.
