We don't want people permabanned for misspelling or posting big pictures! :o

It would improve the forums a lot though.

I always did wonder how someone becomes a mod here, are you just picked when there is not enough or does someone need to have shown the quality's of a mod?

    Well it helps if you
    a) hate the company...
    b) ... and everyone in the forums (get those insults out there!)
    c) spam a lot
    d) are more like coolsome
    e) got banned a lot in the past

While I can't genuinely speak on behalf of the higher ups, I think that when the need arises, they pick people who they genuinely believe will be a good moderator - one that arbitrates or mediates, AKA a person who moniters the conversations in an on-line chatroom/forum for bad language, inappropriate content, etc.

For some utterly bizarre reason, people thought I might be good at doing that, so they asked if I'd do it shortly before TWD Ep 4 came out. And I said 'thanks, but no', since I didn't feel I was in a good place to do so, especially seeing the deluge of madness that the TWD subsection was at the time. Then they asked again before Ep 5, I figured I was ready and I said yes. So here we are.

I think what happens is that they keep an eye on people who act responsibly and somewhat demonstrate that they would use the mod powers wisely, take note of these people and then when they need new mods, go back and ask those they've noted if they'd be willing to do it.

It is NOT a matter of just asking to be one. So don't bother. :)

For the record - this place would be a lot duller without the coolsomes and der_ketzers of the world, but sometimes they do tend to go a bit overboard with the silliness (usually mostly almost always coolsome). That's when you'll see warnings and such. We accept a lot, but don't push it. :)

I don't want to talk too much about the new forums - especially given what happened last time I talked about them - but basically, everything Vain said is what I would have said, only not as eloquently*. The new forum can't come soon enough - I'd love to actually be able to see what's going on after 9:30 in the morning, for one - but the new features that come with it will be... well, we'll see how they go.

Finally, about the role-playing stuff... I'm fine with it in the Role-Playing threads. If you see it elsewhere in non RP threads, hit the 'report post' button to the left of the post itself (it's the little road sign, if you don't know which it is) and let us know what's wrong with the post. One of us will deal with it.

Please, for all that is holy, do not respond to them. It just spins the thread out of control and means I have to come along and use that 'Keep Calm' poster.

*Using words like 'eloquently' probably helps improve your mod-prospects, as does using proper grammar, avoiding swear words and not acting like a 5-year old on a sugar rush. Just sayin'.

What's with community members all suddenly saying that? What's with so many people suddenly feeling the need to be reassured that they're WANTED here?

Can you even imagine how many 'friend requests' I actually rejected on this forum, because the term actually means something to me??
  • edited August 2013
Yeah off topic but anyone remember when someone spammed the forums asking to become a mod?

On Topic. In all seriousness. You shouldn't be insulting mods if they banned you (as shown in this thread) because the mods are good with what they do. Its been a very long time since we last had a time where spambots did major attacks on sub forums. When looking at the TWD forums. You're complaining that people are rping? Yeah I'd rather have them rping then having a pile of people complain and moan about when an episode of TWD comes out. (I'm not sure if its true but wasn't commenting on blogs disabled because people began spamming S&M and other game posts about TWD?) Anyway back on point. Mods kept all that crap under control the best they could once all that happened. In short the Mods here do a good job.

I see, well thanks for explaining that, good to know I will keep that in mind in the future.

I find it hard to reject friend requests. They took the effort to add me! And what if they take a rejection to heart?

If someone adds me that I don't really consider a friend, I just leave them in limbo and pretend I haven't seen them.

And I don't really add people either. I just assume that if they like me, they'll add me!

About Olga . Olga isn't exactly nice .
When I tried to message her and tell her to be nice , she called me a loser and told me that she is going to report me to the Internet Crime Complaint Center .

Some people are like that. You could always report them using the button under the post.

Although I am quite curious as to were the internet crime complaint centre is. I'm going with Epcot, because why not?

Good thing no one told Alan back then. :D :D

Yeah off topic but anyone remember when someone spammed the forums asking to become a mod?

I have, on one occasion, received a PM from a newly registered member asking how they could become a moderator this instant.

(I'm not sure if its true but wasn't commenting on blogs disabled because people began spamming S&M and other game posts about TWD?)

There was far more going on than 'just' that. Community members ritually trolled other community members by using fake anonymous names, and so much more. Fact is, this blog comment system is even more in need of a major overhaul than the rest of the forums. This was a place where you could post comments without registration anywhere, not even a fucking captcha. This was a constant source of hideous abuse and spambots also loved it with a passion. And moderators had no way of doing anything in those comments besides report the crap to higher authorities. I believe that's why the plug was pulled.

The beta had no mod tools, so I can't say if moderators are meant to mod the "new" blog comments. However, only registered members could post under blog posts, which would be a HUGE improvement.

It's HARD, isn't it?! But I can't have friend requests piling up in my inbox, and I can't really add people whose requests I receive thinking "who IS that guy?". It's just not working that way.

What part of DO NOT TALK TO ME AGAIN did you not understand?! I reported you to IC3 because you were threatening me via PMs.
Now do yourself a favor and stop talking about me. And stop sending me messages because I couldn't care less about what you have to say.

Indeed. If you receive PMs which you think are highly insulting or threatening, report and forward them to the moderators. This is absolutely nothing to be debated out in the open. End of discussion.

Are you serious? Yes because new members are picked to become a moderator right after joining over the people who have been members here for years.

Seriously why does people think that they can become a mod just by joining the forums?

Because people are so bloody entitled these days. [/Cynicism]

Pretty sure I got that PM too. Was a while ago though, so I could be wrong. Dude got shut down pretty quick either way, so it doesn't really matter too much.

I think we should get some sort of ghost duck to decide who becomes an admin or a moderator or metal admiral the 15th.

If it indeed WAS "before your time", it was "only just". I hope I don't have to research that. ;)

On topic. Has anyone noticed that the downtime has seem to have gotten worse? It used to be about one hour but now it seems to be more random when you can go on and lasts for 3 or 4 hours.

Off topic. Still why do they even think they would be picked when other mods and TTG don't know if they can be trusted to not abuse their power as a mod.
  • edited August 2013
This may sound dumb but what is 'downtime', I have heard that term I just don't know what it means.

It when the site is temporarily taken off-line for maintenance. It tends to happen around 8:00-9:00 GMT and lasts for a few hours (so if you're living in the US, it happens in the middle of the night and doesn't really affect you).

On-topic - Yeah, we know. Won't be long until we get it sorted.

Off-topic - Maybe they thought to just try their luck? Maybe they were kidding? I dunno.

On Topic: They proboly just thought oh hey cool I'm on a forum on my fave game I wonder if I can be a mod.

Off Topic: To begin with we're not what you'd call human. Over the past two hundred years A kind of consciousness formed layer by layer in the crucible of the White House. It's not unlike the way life started in the oceans four billion years ago.

The White House was our primordial soup, a base of evolution We are formless. We are the very discipline and morality that Americans invoke so often. How can anyone hope to eliminate us? As long as this nation exists, so will we.

    No Metal Gear Solid 2.
  • edited August 2013
Yes. I have been playing Saints Row 4. It has a good soundtrack including Opposites Attract (Its got jokes made about it) and What is Love? Which oddly is good to listen to when you have to fly the ship. The game has fun powers and missions as well.

On topic, it would be nice if it wasn't so damn random. Sometimes its back up only to go back off. It happened to me today after finishing a long post.

For the time being, select-all and copy the text you make before hitting 'Post', just to be safe.

It won't be too long before... well, can't really talk about it yet. But you get the idea.

It IS bothersome. Actually, during the now infinitely prolonged times the forum is 'half awake', it often happens that your post arrives safely in the forum, but you get no response that it did. So you push 'post' again, and there's your double or triple post. :o

Most of us have, in the meantime, installed the Lazarus plugin to their [Firefox] browsers to keep typed content from just disappearing. :)

Anyway I usually copy my post just incase. I forget to do it sometimes but most of the time I do it.
