Thoughts? Questions? Concerns?

For my part, I'm putting my money into Sony's camp, and hope that the XBox One is a colossal failure.

I for one want all parties to have much success and earn much money and keep everyone employed and happy but okay if you want a whole division of a major company to fail

If that division consistently makes anti-consumer choices, then yes they deserve consistently negative consequences. I don't care how big the division or the company is. Why does it matter if it's a "whole division" or a "major company"? Does being large suddenly absolve something of having to deal with consequence?

Yes, I think the blunders being made for the One are worth catastrophic financial ruin. If the Xbox division ended up losing Microsoft millions and they had to shut the whole thing down I'd feel absolutely no remorse whatsoever.

Okay, well I don't feel that way seeing as they're just trying to make as much money as possible like any other company. Don't buy it if you don't want it but I don't think liking one thing should mean you want it's competitors to fail (nor should you like something's competitors if you don't like it)

Yes, companies exist to make money.

That is not an excuse for anti-consumer behavior. That is an incentive AGAINST anti-consumer behavior. Consumers aren't OBLIGATED to buy something that goes against their interests just because the company producing that thing "just wants to make money". The company's JOB, or at least what is SUPPOSED to be the company's JOB, is to make money by providing something that the CONSUMER WOULD WANT TO PAY FOR.

Treating the consumer like an enemy or a parasite is a perversion of the natural capitalistic process and deserves to be punished.

    No.

This isn't "I like Warner Bros. animation, so I hope Disney fails."

This isn't "I like Nintendo consoles, so I hope SONY and Microsoft fail."

This isn't "I like Jiff peanut butter, so I hope Peter Pan goes out of business."

This is "Microsoft is making horrible, anti-consumer choices, and they deserve market backlash as a direct consequence of those choices."

They showed Tidus's face on a giant screen. That's evil. Microsoft didn't force people's cones and rods to take in that shitstain's dumb grin on a massive scale. I hope Sony collapses and everyone there loses their jobs for acknowledging that bondage clown Kurt Cobain exists.

I don't like the direction Xbox One is going. To much focus on sports and television. I don't like the idea of having to sign in at least once a day. I don't like that I can't let friends borrow a game. Not really big on Kinect either, even though the new one does appear to be far more advanced and impressive. Still, it's not something I want.

If I had to choose, I would got with the PS4. But I won't be getting it at launch. I'll be sticking with my PS3 for a long while. By the time I finish my back log of games and trophy hunting the PS4 will be half price. Or, their be a new and better model of it on the market.

You know who else kept people employed? The N...

Okay okay, seriously though. Just because you employ a lot of people doesn't mean you're doing good for consumers.

I'm still sitting this one out. It's PS2 all over again. I sat out the PS2/Xbox war until a game came out that blew me away... 2 years after the console debuted.

    I lol'ed irl.

I did also notice Tidus and wondered what the heck they were thinking by putting him there.

To drag this back onto the originally intended topic...

The whole point of a video games console is that, shock horror, people primarily want to play games on it. The PS4, and to some extent the WiiU, both seem to be making very positive steps in that regard, with both high-budget (I don't like saying AAA any more, it's had some rather negative connotations lately) and Indie games being supported much more and both consoles offering more options for games - the WiiU has the 'innovative' controller and the PS4 has the touch screen on the controller.

By comparison, the XBone appears, so far, to be offering much LESS in the way of gaming. Not just in games, but in the way the console is being pushed. Less freedom to Indie game developers, less options for pre-owned games and new new options for the way the games control. Yes, there's the Kinect, but nobody LIKES the Kinect. This has been proven, so quite why they're forcing everyone to have one is an odd decision. Beyond that... there's nothing new here games-wise.

So yeah, it's easy to see why gamers are upset. The PS4 may not have blown everyone away, but at least it's trying something new while also opening the way for smaller devs to get into the scene. Is Microsoft? Nope.

I still won't get any of these consoles for quite some time - I've never been a day one buyer and nothing here seems to want to change my mind - but so far the PS4 and the WiiU have my attention far more than Microsoft.

Also, here's an abbreviated version of the PS4 conference.

There's no battle of the consoles any more, as Microsoft obviously wants to lose with a vengeance. I had my eye on the PS4, but pricing is of the essence here. New console games on the PS3 already cost an absurd amount of money compared to PC games, and it's rumored that Sony wants to raise those prices by a tasty 25 to 30% for PS4 games. That's absolutely not what I am about to pay in a market situation which eliminates used games as a possibility. I'd rather buy the 8 to 9 Blu Ray movies I'd get for the same money than that single game.

If the PS4 goes on sale for 350$/€ or less and the games stay at 65$/€ or even drop in price, I'll take a second look. In any other case, I'll keep my money for sure. Haven't got enough of it anyway.

To be fair I feel Sony are kind of avoiding announcing too much and as bad as the Xbox one is...

Sony haven't announced whether or not you will be able to play pre-owned games or not
They also have no backwards compatibility
The also are going to just have some black box that is probably just as ugly...
The only real difference is Sony chose to focus on games at the reveal and leave the console for E3 whilst Microsoft decided to focus on the console at the announcement and wait til E3 to announce their 15 exclusive games...

Still unless they announce 15 brilliant games...

We can only speculate until E3 where they announce Viva Pinata 3, Kameo 2, Fable 4, Blinx the Timesweeper 3, Grabbed by the Ghoullies 2, the real Banjo threeie and Announces Kinect was just a practical joke...
    (I hope at least)

That's the console crux. I started out with the Atari 2600 and the NES. "Backwards compatibility" was pretty much a dream back then, it was TEH argument for the PC, while today it somehow seems to be expected among users. I understand that part, but judging from history, it never was a focus for console manufacturers.

Was the PS4 design every shown, anywhere? From what can you infer that "they also are going to just have some black box that is probably just as ugly"?

I have no desire for either console.

(Looks like its just you two and me 3DS and PC, well, until Nintendo get something good out for the WiiU that is! XD)

I'm getting a PS4 and most likely a Wii U but I will not be getting the Xbox One because in my opinion it does not care about games. The only thing we have been hearing about it is completely stupid choices for the Xbox One. Let's compare PS4's reveal to Xbox One's. Microsoft spent the whole thing going on and on about TV, Movies, Kinect, and sports which no one gives a crap about. They only reveal some games like Forza and showed some gameplay of Cod (Which got a whole 15 minutes of the damn thing) and then after it they reveal some of the stupidest choices. Let's see what the Xbox One now restricts you from doing. You can't rent games because you have to pay a fee to play it. You can let friends borrow games because they have to pay a fee. You can't buy Pre-Owned games because of the fee and Indie games can't even go on it (I think). As for those 15 exclusives wasn't 5 of those announced were to be EA sports titles (Again i think)

PS4's reveal was focused on games. If i remember right, Sony spent the first 15 or 30 minutes showing the features of the PS4 and the controller and developer thoughts. Then they spent the rest of the night revealing games. Some games being Killzone Shadow Fall, inFamous Second Son, Knack, and Drive Club and it showed some multiplatform games like Watch Dogs. Also if i remember right didn't they say they were trying to make the PS4 more indie friendly? Fair enough Sony didn't reveal if PS4 will have some of the crap the Xbox One has but i hope Sony is smart enough to see all the bs Microsoft is using to get more money out of people and i hope they see the negative response that people is giving Microsoft's BS.

Sorry if i sounded harsh on this but its my opinion.

I'll be putting money towards a Wii U. Why? They have games that interest me, they give a crap about the fans, and they weren't retarded enough to take away Wii backwards compatibility.

That being said. When they announce something for PS4 that I desperately want(an Arkham City SEQUEL instead of prequel or, God willing, Battlefront 3), that will be what I go for. I don't know what Microsoft is smoking with the Xbox One(stupid name BTW).

What is so bad about a prequel? I want to see some things resolved to, but more batman is more batman.

Prequels usly flesh out stuff that will be important in the sequel.

They did indeed. They've already started with the 'Indie' category on PSN, and they've already said that they'll let developers self-publish their own games. Here's a good article from March describing what Sony's doing for 'indie' games.

    This #hit is getting ridiculous.

First I do want both to succeed, I just think Microsoft needs to get whooped upside the head and learn a lesson.

Two, when I see game maker conferences talking about pushing boundaries and cutting edge, I'm like, really? You're making pretty pictures move and hit each other. You know who's pushing boundaries? Those MIT boys making DRACO, or the scientists working at the Large Haldron Collider.

No i'm pretty sure it has not been shown yet because in this Playstation Blog post they basically make it look like its being shown on June 10th on another livestream.

There's been a teaser trailer for it, and someone basically took all the little bits of it they showed and made an estimate of what the full thing looked like (located here), but it's not officially been revealed yet.

As much as I don't think the current console generation's big-budget mass market industry is "pushing boundaries", I think trying to compare them to MIT or Hadron Collider scientists is being intentionally obtuse. Are you saying that artistic and even business fields do not have the potential to push boundaries within their respective spheres?

The manufacturers of the PS4 aren't breaking boundaries. Now, some game designers, from an artistic point of view, are. But SONY itself as a company is not.

So guess what, while Microsoft have been making rip off BS choices, Sony have basically confirmed most PS4 games will be playable on Vita using Remote Play.

So by remote play does it mean like what the WiiU does where you have to be a certain distance from the PS4 for it to work? Because that was already confirmed at the PS4 launch and isn't really worth buying a PS Vita over. Nice to have if you own a Vita already though.

The press event announced remote play as a feature, but it was extremely vague about whether or not it'd be supported on a wide scale, or kept to a minimum handful of titles as it is right now on PS3. This announcement more or less confirms that Sony is making remote play compulsory for developers on the PS4, making all PS4 games remote play compatible.

Remote play as it works right now DOES let you play PS3 content on a Vita at a different WiFi hotspot, by the way.

Ok that is an awesome feature then. Does that work for any PS3 game or just the ones that have Vita versions?

Some PS3 games that have Remote Play
    Lego Batman
    Lair
    All the PixelJunk games
    God of War Collection 1
Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection

On another note doesn't that mean Sony had the idea before Nintendo. Fair enough it was not used to its full potential and Nintendo improved on it completely but still doesn't this not mean that Sony had the idea first?

Edit:Here's a full list of the games for remote play on Wikipedia:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remote_Play

For the PS3 it only works for a select number of titles. It doesn't matter if it has a Vita version, you're misunderstanding what this featuer DOES.

Remote play connects your Vita to your PS3 over the internet and streams a video of gameplay to the Vita. The game doesn't actually RUN on the Vita, it's just getting a streaming video from the PS3 and sending input commands over WiFi(so responsiveness depends largely on connection speed). The big problem for Remote Play is support, not many titles(and even less that are worth much) currently support the PS3's remote play functionality, with the notable standouts being stuff like Lair, BlazBlue Calamity Trigger, and every PS1 game on PSN. With the PS4, apparently, they're expanding Remote Play to work with EVERY Playstation 4 title, making it a much more robust feature than it is right now.
