  • Everything about this song is so effortlessly cool. From the sample of The Zombies 'Time of the Season' to the way the rapper's voices flow into each other during the bridge. They manage to make a dumb song about "drugs and girls" classy and fun. I hope Black Hippy does more collaborations in the future. They're really the best thing going for rap in recent years.

Why yes, I am a BH stan! What tipped you off?

One of Wu-Tang's best tracks in my opinion and the quintessential song that got me on the Wu Train. So much intensity.

Raekwon was my favorite verse too, he crippled then killed that verse.

I've come to learn that asking whose your favorite Wu-Tang member is a lot like asking whose your favorite child... it just can't be split down the hairs like that. Although I've always loved U-God and finds he's usually a safe bet for a fire verse and I love Ghostface Killah's delivery.

So yeah, they're all dope in my opinion. Although in this particular song, Raekwon Chef is an easy "Sophie's choice" for me.

  • Aw man! No half answers!

Seriously though, I dig all of em', but Ghost and Dirt McGirt are probably my favorites. They're just so hammy, I love it!

I've actually heard Angel Haze spit before. Seems like she's gotten better since then.

  • Yeah, Ghostface is excellent. I also love the video, all these new peppy rap divas could learn a thing or two about how to make an intimidating video. Too many people just lining up black youth with sagging pants behind the rapper in an attempt to look intimating and hard.

But I love that chess set especially.

Today's selection comes from the late, great, King of New York. Turns out Big Poppa was the king of subliminal disses too. In 'Kick in the Door', Biggie fires subliminal shots at a bunch of New York rappers. Including: Nas, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Jeru the Damaja and even DJ Premier (who produced the damn track!).

B.I.G. is an amazing lyricist, as always. But the highlight for me is the best; it's menacing and all over the place.

EDIT: Surprisingly, Tupac isn't mentioned at all. Maybe it was recorded after he was killed.

Fucking classic, I remember bumping that while playing Grand Theft Auto 4 online and was so hype during a game of deathmatch cause it was the first time I ascended to the level of a 18-1 ratio, almost untouchable. Thank you Pun for that level of motivation.

    Rest in peace.

Here's another HU song I really love. It's actually a reaction towards a diss song their former lead singer (Deuce) did after he left the band.

  • A pretty good response track, though hoestly, Deuce made it pretty easy for them. The guy did more whining than dissing. He should've taken a page from Ice Cube's book.

THIS is how you dismantle your former crew! Cube dropped No Vaseline and N.W.A split up almost instantly.

Jazzy and laid back as you please.

  • First time I heard him, he was rapping about raping and killing a girl off of Earl Sweatshirt's mixtape. No matter what extreme he's on, horrorcore (epaR) or socially conscious material (aforementioned Hands Up) he still bumps.

I also purchased Mellowhype's blackenedwhite album. I'm sure you've heard of Hodgy Beats? Well he's another member of OF that has a very beloved smaller fan-base.

  • I always find that when a rapper can blend contemporary jazz with a soulful backing track while still sounding fairly hard, that's a hell of a test of a great lyricist.

I won't lie that Blu isn't my cup of tea. But, he for sure possesses skill.

  • It's a tightrope situation.

I enjoy The Roots if they count and think that it can sound great. But much like Jazz itself, there are some musicians I like, and some I just don't care for. And I'm not entirely sure what triggers my reaction.

  • Here I will give y'all another artist who I really like, but is really not well known. Bukshot is another rapper I really like and I guess would consider horrorcore. Found him through a song he did with Boondox and another song he did with Twiztid. The thing I like about him he always seems to references popular stuff in his songs.

  • One of my favorite Kanye West songs and one of his first. Interestingly, he recorded this while his mouth was wired shut, but did a pretty damn good job considering. Almost every bar has a punchline and it lacks the crushing ego of most of his shit, which is nice.

  • Every time I try to get into Kanye, I always hear a song that throws my expectations off. I'm nothing if not fair toward people like Kanye who are exceptional producers. But that Alvin and the Chipmunks voice clip is too distracting for me. I do love Jesus Walks though and On Sight was fucking raw even though the majority of Yeezus was fairly underwhelming. I just can't commit to buying an entire album.

  • I want to shift gears for a change and discuss a prominent issue that resides in the genre of rap... Violence.

Is rap a genre that glorifies, to a certain extent, violence and gang culture or is something that is often overly blown out of proportions?

For me, there's no denying that rap asserts its more violent themes more than a lot of other genres. However, being someone who has quite an elective taste in music, I can for sure confirm that certain genres and sub-genres delve far more offensively into violence than mentioning a drive-by or a glock being strapped to one's side.

The reason I'm curious is because rap is a genre that is constantly under scrutiny and surveillance from many-a-critics and being the fastest growing genre out right now even breaking out into mainstream radio, it's a genre a lot have both admiration and skepticism towards.

Certain rappers like the drill and trap rappers for sure glorify killing and shooting up people, yet it's no worse than what bands like Cannibal Corpse were growling about in 1993 when vile death metal was breaking out with angry white suburban teenagers. But, I digress.

    What are your thoughts?

  • Damn shame he died :(. This is freaking awesome.

Yeah, he usually has one or two songs per album that blow me away. My favorites are Monster, Touch the Sky and Drive Slow.

Speaking of which, you might find that one a bit more palatable, it has a laid back alt Jazz beat that sound shocking different from his usual stuff.

Rap is often a reflection of life in the poorest, grimiest parts of America. Kids like Chief Keef and a Bobby Smurda probably started gangbanging before they could read, so they rap about what they know. When the youth grow up in the dark, that's what they express in their lyrics. Hip Hop is violent because the ghetto (and I would argue America in general) is increasingly violent.

Another, less charitable, explanation : Record execs kno.w that their burgeoning mainstream (read : white) audiences gobble up the most ignorant rap they can find.

You know what really bugs me though? When rappers like Soulja Boy a d Ace Hood try to act violent. I've been to hood's hometown. The place is a white bread, middle-class town with far more retirees than gangbangers. The shit he raps about isn't his life.
