Wait, I know that some of the people here have been irrationally picking every little nit, but what's the problem with having a different opinion of things?
  • edited May 2010
My opinion hates their opinion. It's my opinion of their opinion. I don't like their opinion and my opinion of my opinion is that my opinion is opinionated but better than their opinion, and that's my opinion.

Oh, and I hate the opinion argument. It attacks a persons justification to call people out on things, of which people are completely justified.

This looks just like how I want to see Elaine look. She doesn't look mean , she looks tough. Once again you all prove to me you have horrible taste in designs. It's like you don't even know who Elaine is.

So you're telling me that since this is how you see Elaine, regardless of her at least mostly sweet look from the other games, that this is how she should look?

The fact of the matter is (at least that I have noticed) that Elaine DOES NOT look tough, and yet she is. Hell, look at her in Tales, she looks pretty helpless to me. She's supposed to be the cute little wife who is actually tougher than her husband.
  • edited May 2010
Cute? Little? Wife? I never saw her as any of that. She's an incredibly independent woman. Even in her MARRIAGE shes independent. As far as how she should look, I think she should look exactly as she does in whatever final design the game designers went with. Like it or not, that will be a canon look for Elaine.

As far as these designs, it says ELAINE MARLEY on the paper. It is impossible for Elaine to not look like Elaine, regardless of artistic interpretation. Steve Purcell drew her with black hair, yet in another game he drew her with red hair. It's the Link syndrome. Her only real defining features are that she's a governess and an independent woman in a pirate world. If someone drew a platypus with red hair wearing a duck costume on the planet Mars, put it in a canon Monkey Island game, and said it was Elaine, then it would be Elaine.

And that drawing doesn't look even remotely mean to me. She looks tough, she looks determined. She doesn't look mean.

I'm aware of that. But just because we don't like it, does that really mean we don't have taste in design?
  • edited May 2010
In my opinion, you guys have bad taste in Elaine and Guybrush designs. Furthermore, I've decided to be as petty about what I think as I possibly can.
  • edited May 2010
Everyone who griped about these designs, or said they aren't Elaine, or griped about the clothes, or griped about the age, or griped about the facial expressions.

In other words pretty much everyone.

so if EVERYBODY think it's bad, and you're the only one who think it's good... by your logic... WE have the bad taste?

I loved the Guybrush one I like the Elaine one but think she looks older then her other styles.

I really like V4, but she could look younger. I think it’s hard to tell how good it is on a model sheet. You really need to see the character against a background and with an other character to see how it fits into the world.

    Argumentum ad populum.

I don't like the Mona Lisa, and I think everyone else is wrong when they call her beautiful. So, hey, I'm just that way.

Whats up with her feet in the front view?

It could take all day to discuss all the misconceptions here, so I'll just go with one: Since when are *concept drawings* canon?
  • edited May 2010
    I don't think that's his point, but I digress.

This design of Elaine reminds me of the one in this painting.

I actually really like v4 Elaine... she looks strong yet beautiful and looks MUCH more like her closeups in the original game imo. I'm glad they took the pink away, I mean, what self respecting woman actually wears a pink pirate shirt anyway? *shudder*
    I always hated the pink.

Hey, anyone bothered recolouring this into the pink/black/purple shades yet?

As for Guybrush.. I like v3 but he looks too old, much more like TOMI sort of age instead of the 19? he's supposed to be. 1,2 and 4 just don't do it for me and 5 is okay I suppose. Though looking at the in game footage, he doesn't actually look like any of those concepts really... go figure. I think my issue with 5 is that his beard is too lush and healthy hah. Give him a more pathetic stubble thing going on, and I think i'd be happier.

But yeah... I love new Elaine.

    ...huh.

I liked the previous version better, but what can I do, eh? I hate playing this game, but get rid of a bit of the scowl and lighten the eyes just a bit. I guess make her less antagonistic looking would be my critique.

On the plus side, she looks like she as freckles. I find this kinda charming.

I switched to this tab and jumped as a scary woman was staring at me. Eek!
The outfit is nice, but her expression scares me.

Her head is quite large O_o
    Especially in the walking pose.

And Guybrush is a pinhead compared to most of the characters in the game. I don't know if it's a symptom of "design by committee," but body proportions seem pretty wonky. Maybe that wouldn't be the case if the game were being designed from scratch, or treated more uniformly, without attempting to "translate" characters one by one, piece by piece.

If this is what they're doing, then they're doing a terrible job. I just don't understand the change in costume. I mean they kinda got the boots right...and that's it, it seems like they tried to completely translate the SoMI Elaine, but then with LR they wanted to make a transition to CMI. I'm not saying I didn't like CMI, I just think she looks so weird.

    It's the Link syndrome.

With a couple of notable exceptions, Link is actually a different person in each game. Elaine is, as far as we know, the same person across the whole series.

Anyway I think this Elaine looks pretty good. I don't really understand what's up with the color swap (anybody feel like photoshopping this art into the original colors and see how it looks?) but I think it works.
  • edited May 2010
I was really opposed to her angry looks at first, but now I'm thinking it might work. Not in EVERY scene of the game, but most scenes. I also don't mind her outfit in the least.

This is a definite candidate for a fan-mod, though. No doubt about it.
  • edited May 2010
I was going to redo the entire thing CMI style anyway.

I may like V5 the best overall. But not the freckles. Elaine may have a reddish tint to her hair, but she is not that much of a light redhead. She never has been in any renditions and that is just beyond strange.

And I too would like to see these last two designs with the outfit colors she has on in LR.

well. seeing as she only has about 2 and a half scenes in the entire game (3, if you die in the acid pit), I don't think that's gonna cause any trouble.

If you die, you get a cutscene of Elaine asking Guybrush why, if he was disintegrated in an acid pit, he is telling her the story looking very integrated, and Guybrush admits he may have exaggerated a bit. Then you have to do the puzzle again.

Okay, I'm starting to really like V5 of Elaine. :D The correct colors make her look so much better. Take away the pale freckle look and that's perfect, as far as I'm concerned.

I still think she looks too angry, but otherwise I like it.

For some reason I first read Eve Angeli and I thought "what are you talking about?"
  • Color corrected version is better. Not because I like Evangeline Lilly. Okay. So maybe it is. I'm going to miss seeing her on Lost... :(
