Chyron, you misread my post. This isn't the first time I've seen his reviews. I've seen all of his reviews. These are the first reviews of his where I feel they were just yelling unfunny jokes at the screen. Because this time they were seriously unfunny, from complaining about things I didn't get [Spock saying "Hold your horse, Captain"] to screaming about a scene taking too long that's really only about six minutes long. Yes, he does do critical analysis, and it was better in the Final Frontier review, but it was overshadowed by him yelling at things he didn't understand that have logical explanations or a place in the story, IE the campfire scenes, which while are disjointed from the movie's plot, are also the best part of it and don't really deserve to be screamed at. It's like every time something happened he just screamed constantly.
You know a good review of a Star Trek movie. One that doesn't use screaming. One that gets its points across without being grating and makes sense? Plinkett's Generations review. I don't like Plinkett's sense of humor, but thankfully he kept it to a minimum in that review, sticking instead to his brilliant critical analysis. Some of it is stuff Trek fans would only know, and some of it is stuff anyone could pick out. But hey, I've said my piece on those reviews of Doug's, and I simply don't have to watch them again. And I won't. And I don't expect a nice reaction from you when I say this, but I love The Motion Picture, I love Search For Spock, and I like some of the scenes in Final Frontier but I do acknowledge its general badness. Personally I find the bad TNG movies to be far worse and less enjoyable, especially Insurrection.
I do generally enjoy Doug's videos, honestly. If I were to pick a favorite review, I might have to say Little Monsters. He's not my favorite reviewer on the site, and he does frequently get things wrong. But I enjoy him enough to keep watching. This was the first time I saw a review of his and couldn't find anything enjoyable at all.
I'm not too fond of telling the internet my entire life story unasked. If people want to know, I'd like them to ask. At least so I can keep distinct what version of my past I've told people so I don't mess that up.
I just use it to broadcast my inner thoughts and link to video and news articles that say more about me than posting that I had 3 eggs for breakfast after I burned them or something stupid like that.
Timeline is so much worse than the other updates, coolsome. It's a framing nightmare. Two columns with bisecting rows and you can't control it. It looks like garbage. A child's art project. Trash.
Yup, but there's nothing I can do about that. I even sent my feedback, but ultimately, it's Zukerburg's site, and his team can do whatever the hell he wants.
I'm keeping my facebook, no matter what happens simply because there are lots of people where that is my only way of contacting them. Also, George Takei's posts are hilarious. Everyone should friend him because he's awesome.
Takei's photos are the only reason I liked his page.
complaining about things I didn't get [Spock saying "Hold your horse, Captain"]
It was a bad joke in the movie; a pun on the idiom hold your horses.
to screaming about a scene taking too long that's really only about six minutes long.
I agree, he did overdo it when complaining about TPM being slow moving.
Personally I find the bad TNG movies to be far worse and less enjoyable, especially Insurrection.
Trek V is in some ways memorable, however bad and campy it is. Insurrection's problem is that it might as well be a multi-part TNG episode and is therefore forgettable as an actual movie. People complain about Nemesis but I liked it a lot, with the exception of
the discovery of B4 both because his introduction into the franchise feels arbitrary and also because his existence cheapens Data's death. (ie. Data, who is on a personal quest for humanity, gives the ultimate human sacrifice.)
Nemesis I have no real opinion on, as it is the only Trek movie I have yet to see. I'm simply waiting because I promised a friend I'd let him show it to me, and we just haven't had the time.
So on Monday, Nan Desu Kan alerted everyone that they would be releasing the link to register for hotel rooms today at noon. This created a feeding frenzy that got all the rooms snapped up within 20 minutes. Luckily, I managed to get a room at all, but I missed out on an atrium balcony, so no decorating contest this year.
What pisses me off even more about this is that when I went back and looked, I found that they posted the reservation link on the NDK forums ten minutes before everywhere else got it.
Portal 2 might win me over. I hate the first person view....but it's inching me closer to picking it up. Don't really want to watch full clips as it kind of gives away the puzzles.
My kitty was just sitting on my lap.
Well... not sitting so much as lying down massage-parlour style, head drooped over my leg, just letting me stroke him and scratch his ears/chin.
He might not be the most social cat, and I do tease him quite a bit, but in the end of the day he is my best buddy. My lazy, greedy, sleepy little rascal.
He even lets me hug him these days, in fact he sometimes actively persues it.
Most of the time its because he wants my left-over cereal milk, (which I never let him have, he gets plenty of treats, the greedy puss!), but if I hold my arms out while I'm sitting at a desk/table, and gesture him, he'll come over and sit right in front of me, and let me give him a cuddle.
Man I'm going to miss the old puss when he finally croaks.
(I mean, 13 years is old for a cat, he may only have a couple of years left, but he's a lovely, healthy kitty at the moment, and I spend any spare chance I get to go see him and pet him a bit)
He's a one-of-a-kind cat! He really is!
EDIT: Its actually very funny when he's after my bowl. He'll jump up, move towards me, goes in for a cuddle, then tries to reach out to the milk bowl for a lick. I then move it to the other side, then he'll turn around for another cuddle, then tries to get it again. He'll follow the bowl another 2 or 3 times, then just gives up and lies down in front of me or hop off and wonder back to the conservatory.
Okay guys, SRS BUSINESS. I have until Monday to decide which job offer I'm going to take... and I'm not so sure what to pick
If it's a choice between good jobs, then you will win no matter what you pick. Research the companies online, decide what you like/hate about them, and choose one. If for some reason the choice you make doesn't work out, well, you can check to see if the others are still interested.
If it's a choice between bad jobs, pick whichever you think will stress you out the least.
No, guys. it's the Department of Defense in Hawaii or the State Department in Japan.
Having been to Hawaii, not a fan. But then, I hate things like:
-Excessive sunlight
-Heat
-Sand
-Getting a nasty gash on my leg thanks to coral which is EVIL
-Walking out of the ocean with an automatically salt and sand-filled wound
Those last two things might not be universal.
...Actually, now that I think about it, Japan was where I found out that my father had been having an affair for years because he left his email account open. I proceeded to keep that bottled in for I think about two years-ish until it finally got around to people actually talking about it phase. As far as I know, he has no idea I carried that around with me at all, let alone for that long.
Both suck, pick something in Atlanta and hang out with me instead. =P

Heh, I did the same thing to my knee snorkelling off the coast of Borneo. Then fell over while standing on one leg to wash away the nastiness, scraping the SAME KNEE on wet concrete. It was a great day. I got a scar and all!
Re jobs: very broadly, these are the things I'd be looking at (roughly in order of priority):
Any "once in a lifetime experience" factor
Quality/transferrability of skills learned
Long-term career prospects
Environment (for me it would be Hawaii all the way, your preferences may differ)
Salary (depends on how motivated you are by money, often other factors make up for a lower salary)
People I know in the organisation and/or met in the hiring process
Both positions are for three months over the summer between my first and second year of grad school. The one in Hawaii, if I do well, would likely lead to a full-time offer, due to the nature of the institution (It's a wiki and internet response team for natural disasters in the Pacific, sharing unclassified info between the US government, the military, and nations bordering the Pacific Ocean). However, working in the US State Department in any capacity is a BIG plus on a resume. Nobody really knows who or what APAN is, other than disaster coordinators. Everybody knows what an embassy is and how hard it is to get a job at one.
The position in Japan is *most likely* in Naha or Fukuoka, but I should hopefully find out my post tomorrow, which are very far south and practically Hawaii in nature- tropical and touristy, Naha moreso than Fukuoka (Fukuoka, by the way, has the distinction of being the port that ships out almost all of the world's fugu- poison blowfish).
Both places are expensive to live, and my summer salary won't cover my costs in either, but this is really for resume building more than anything else. Japan has excellent public transport, and my potential boss in Hawaii said she'd drive me to and from work every day once she found out I was legally blind.
I assumed so....and not just randomly applying all over the world :P Both would look good on a resume, yes, but I think the multicultural aspects sound better than just working for the USA, in the USA. If you've previously held a similar type of job there, then nevermind this. I do think it sounds better though.
A resident of Japan working at the Department of Defense in Hawaii. No thanks. I'd rather not have another Pearl Harbor.
Too dark?
But yeah, in seriousness, the Hawaiian job sounds like a better bet if it's just for resume building. I mean, helping to take down the largest free nation on the planet through spying and sabotage would look great to many countries. North Korea. China. Russia.

um...I have an Iron Maiden "Somewhere In Time" flag hanging in my window. That's about the extent of my entertainment decor.

I have a Final Frontier poster on my ceiling in my room, right over my bed.
So every morning I wake up I see Eddie staring down at me, grinning!
What are your options?

Masked Kane will be the free DLC on the WWE 12 legend pack with the patch to fix glitches in the game.

Hm...does either company's name sound like a sexual innuendo? You might want to go with that one.
I prefer when they impress me with evolution, personally.
Ooh. Tough call. Are you comfortable speaking Japanese as part of your career?
Or farthest if its THAT kind of family.

Interesting.

*I* have been there a few times. I went to college near Mount Fuji.
