Yeah, like that doesn't happen in commercials, magazines, billboards, the newspaper or ANYWHERE else you look.

Peer Pressure, it's not just for high school anymore.

Funny, high school is also the place where most learn to not give a fuck and get an immunity to peer pressure.

    That is awesome.

I imagine that this is what they spent their time doing when they weren't annoying Booker.

Such people do actually care. They just work really hard to tell themselves that they don't.
I used to be one of those people. Believe me, they care.

Also, tell me you and the people you know don't have a iPhone/smartphone. It seems that everyone in the country has one, regardless of the fact that it seems many people would be hard pressed to afford them when they're $50+ per phone per month.

This "I don't give a fuck" attitude is just a defense mechanism to help oneself overcome disappointment. It doesn't say anything to whether said person actually gives a fuck or not.

Everybody cares what people think. Otherwise, unless you're the most naturally gifted, rich, attractive person around, you're not going to get laid.

If one was, they'd care more, not less.

I don't even own a mobile phone because I'd just have no use for it.

They'd have the luxury of being able to not care though.

Buying a smartphone now is less about peer pressure and more about not having an alternative. It's also rapidly becoming a necessity. I was told, in my most recent lab, to take a picture of the data with my smartphone. So I went out and bought one so I could.
  • edited April 2013
My point is that I'd bet real money that most people don't have smartphones because they need them; they have them, regardless of whether they can afford them, because their friends also have them.

Why the heck else would there be lines around the block for people wanting to buy the next iPhone on day one?
  • edited April 2013
It could also be simple electronics envy. I know I've been drooling over my friend's Surface for the past month. To the extent where he's flatly told me to just go buy one of my own. Which I probably will do eventually.

Well, that's weird to hear, because I, without much effort, believe that I don't really care. My mates are cool about it, that's why they're my mates. There are people who dislike me for that, but I don't really fancy those people anyhow. People who blow a lid if you don't give into peer pressure are not the kind of people I wanna hang with. Giving into peer pressure wouldn't help me achieve anything that I want or need to have fun.

I don't quite get that first sentence of your smartphone paragraph. Are you asking me do I have a smart phone? I don't. I mean, I have a gifted one (Christmas present from parents) laying around somewhere, but it's too bulky and uncomfortable, can't be arsed to drag it around. A lot of people I know do have smartphones, though. What makes me cringe the most is people who drag around those awkward iPads and all they do with them is use them for facebook and that instagram thing. I don't know can those things make a call, but if they can, that's gotta look weird.

It's not that these people don't give a fuck about anything or even not give a fuck at all about something as broad as what other people think of you, it's about not giving a fuck about the consensus that you gotta do and have what everyone else is doing and having to be accepted and considered normal.

Seriously, how can it be lucrative being bitch just so that someone you probably don't even like would pat you on the back.

And 4-20... huh. That's a weird coincidence. Maybe all the anti-pot people really are on to something...

An iPad is very nice for not carrying around a laptop. A Surface is a bazillion times better because you can actually run real programs on it. So it becomes something you can actually do work on instead of just a pretty toy.

I don't see that as a "peer pressure" thing so much as a fascination with new and shiny things, and the general belief that Apple's new and shiny things are better than those provided by other companies.

Unless you're a person who not only has an iPad, but also a couple of versions of iPhone and use them all for the same social networking crap.

That defines every iPad user I've ever met so far in real life.

That still falls under the heading of "people telling you what you should and shouldn't do with your money."

I suppose it's just a difference between people being envious of their peers, and people people being suckers for advertising.

My dad and my sister's husband are Apple fanboys. I complain about all the crap an iOS device is unwilling to let you do without jailbreaking it (even as simple as changing the default browser, renaming apps, or replacing icon images) but they both say "I don't care, I just want it to work."

They might have reason for their preference, but I still think they're stupid for having it.

I'm not sure it is. People see a thing and think it's cool. Yes, other people affect it, in the sense that advertising is made by people and other people own the thing, giving it more exposure, but that's the case for all things(film, books, comics, etc). Things that get more exposure build their own momentum through other people being exposed to stuff because someone near them knows of it etc. I wouldn't call that "peer pressure" or "caring what others think", per se, at least in the conventional sense.

OK, I'm moving this conversation over to the "Whatever's on Your Mind" thread, since it's so off-topic. Feel free to continue it there, if you should so wish.

    EDIT: Aaaaaaand moved.

Everyone I know who has one uses it for work. Like, taking notes during meetings, reading papers, keeping a calendar, and the like.

I use mine mainly for netbookish stuff. For a while it was sitting in my drawer collecting dust until Dashing got mad at me for hogging his nexus 10 during his visit. Heh.

I have a kindle! I use it for reading.

I have a mobile phone! I use it exclusively to have a mobile phone number to put in job applications. Which is bogus, because they'd never be able to reach me that way.

Now that you mention it... where IS that thing?! ;)

I typically use my laptop for most of my reading, though I generally prefer being able to hold an actual book. Reading from my computer is reserved for papers and stuff, but for fun, I'd much rather be able to turn pages.

I used to not like the idea of smartphones, but I've found that it's really very handy to be able to go online and use Skype on a phone so I don't have to lug my laptop around with me everywhere. I thought I'd hate autocorrect, but I'm actually starting to like how it's learned from my typing and corrects to words I'm more likely to use, which is nice, considering that typing on a touch screen isn't easy.

Also, the camera is amazing. Did you know that the resolution on an iPhone camera is good enough that you can take a picture of a blood sample (lay the slide over the camera lens) and send that picture to a lab on the other side of the planet to do the bloodwork on that sample? You can diagnose lots of blood bourn illness that way.

What!? It was totally on topic! I was helping people to define the style of adventure games Telltale were now interested in developing, as well as establishing clear guidelines (yes they were, so hush Jenny) to help clearly identify which style people preferred! It was everyone else who derailed it by questioning my authority! Punish them, not me!

This is absolutely not true for almost everyone. Tons of the population comply with peer pressure well on to their death. The phrase "keeping up with the joneses" comes to mind. Mon mentality behavior, voting patterns, religion, politics, clicks, all have elements of peer pressure.

So close to being finished with the backgrounds.
  • Me and a buddy of mine are going to DC Comics tomorrow to pitch an idea for a Batman graphic novel. I wrote the script, and my buddy’s doing artwork and lettering.

Perhaps it's because of my age, but I've recently come to realize how little it matters for different people to be a different age or status or whatever.

What I mean is that I see my parents more as ordinary people now and less like parents. When I see people who are elderly, I imagine that they were fairly the same when they were in their twenties, personality-wise. For example, the old people in power in our country who argue and bicker for the sake of it probably were always that way, even when they were young.

People who are old, stupid and gullible almost certainly were just as stupid and gullible when they were young, and they've been allowed to get away with it for long enough that they never grew out of it.
