    Ah, but
    she's technically three people now.
Rory's the same person who keeps dying over and over, but it never seems to stick because even the Grim Reaper is afraid of Rory Pond Williams.

As far as we know anyway.

While I enjoyed this episode, it brings up one aspect of the new series of which I'm not terribly fond of. (warning: nerdy rant incoming) :p

    All the companions are "special".
Isn't travelling through time and space with a ancient alien interesting enough?

The Human companions are usually the ones the viewers identify with most.
Giving them all these unique otherworldly abilities seem superfluous.

Rose - Bad wolf, she took the essence of the time vortex into her head, giving her unimaginable powers. Hijinks ensued. currently living in an alternate universe with a Doctor duplicate.

Jack- Might not be a full time companion, but I'l include him anyway.
Immortal (and invulnerable)thanks to Rose, Head of Torchwood, may or may not turn into a giant head. (Oh, did I mention he's immortal)

Donna- Possesses the knowledge and memories of the Doctor, gave life to a Timelord/human duplicate of the doctor.

Amy- Where to begin..., Crack in her wall, letting the universe bleed into her head, brought back the Doctor from un-existence, married to a guy who can not stay dead, gave birth to a Human-Timelord hybrid, and much more.

Rory- Jack-lite, Will not die. fathered Human-Timelord hybrid.

River- Ugh, Human-timelord hybrid, wife of the doctor, and more.

    Clara-
    ??? Reincarnates repeatedly?

Which brings me to my favourite companions of the new series; Martha and Wilfred. Everyday people who are along for the ride.
They're still useful without having random abilities.

Now, I'm not saying I hate these kind of characters, but they are just too many of them.
I'm sure I'm missing a bunch of things, just the ones that immediately came to mind.

If you read all of that, then congratulations.I hope I haven't wasted too much of your time :p

You haven't wasted my time at all - you've actually brought up a very valid point.

It is worth noting that Donna is perfectly normal until The Stolen Earth. Before that she was one of the best companions in Nu-Who.

I agree. I'm not even a fan of the classic series, and I was still excited when I saw it. You have to love the
    space face
    .:D

Does this even really count as a spoiler, given it's in the freakin' title sequence?

...but yeah, I liked it too.

I take it nobody else witnessed the BIG "Doctor Who" Christmas day event?

Yes, on Radio 2 Paul O'Grady played "I Want To Spend My Christmas With a Dalek". Rush to the iPlayer now!

    (In other news:

    1) Strax is great. Let's keep him
    2) New "Radio Times" is out today. Radio 4 Extra are about to broadcast a new series of 8th Doctor adventures (well, new to those of us that didn't buy them a couple of years ago, anyway)

For those of you with satellite TV - all the classic repeats wot we ought to get on proper telly

Idk if its been said but Clara is named after Elizabeth Sladen "Elisabeth Clara Heath-Sladen".

I don't know if naming a companion who
dies every time we see her
    is the best tribute...

It's a nice touch either way.

And that, my friends, is the way you do it.

I miss Punch and Judy. The Crocodile for the next companion!

That wouldn't work. If Mr Punch attacked the Policeman with his own truncheon, the Policeman could just get into his Police Box and fly away.:D

I didn't say its non canon...The Doctor is NOT half human damnit! Just it was a boat load of crap.

I posit that the Doctor made that bit up, and that anyone can use the Eye of Harmony... except the Master, because the TARDIS recognises him as an overacting dick and won't let him in.

But yeah, it's not exactly a great movie... but hey, Doctor Who's been worse in its time. Logopolis, anyone? :p

Finally caught up on all the revived Doctor Who seasons, now having watched all the episodes from Eleventh, Ninth and Tenth Doctor in that order. I am now somewhat unsure of what to do with my life :S

Oh who am I kidding, I'm going to go through all the Matt Smith episodes again until the second half of season 7 begins.

That's the same order I watched them when I first caught Doctor Who during The Time of Angels. Then I watched the 8th Doctor's TV movie, and the Sixth Doctor in Trial of a Time Lord (the latter because I was curious who the Valeyard was due to all the fan speculation that the Meta-crisis Tenth Doctor is the Valeyard).

I'm thinking of watching more classic Doctor Who. Does anyone have any suggestions for some good classic episodes?

I would recommend a sampling of each doctor.

"The Daleks" From the first doctor, "Tomb of the Cybermen" from the second, "Spearhead from Space" for the third, "Genesis of the Daleks" from the fourth, "Planet of fire" or from the fifth, "Trial of a timelord" for the sixth (which you've already seen) and "battlefield" for the seventh".

That's covered some of the more famous ones, some of the origin stories and a few of my favourites.

I'd suggest the Celestial Toymaker for the First Doctor if you don't mind having to look online for a fan reconstruction.

I'm still holding out for "Golden Nemesis". Even if it only takes five minutes to defeat the Cybermen.

The great, great Kelvington has reached the end of his patience with Youtube -

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjiKs4ycl70&feature=youtube_gdata

Unfortunately, a side-effect of this is the cancellation of his plan to insert Tom Baker into the main plot of "The Five Doctors" :(
