It's common sense that they wouldn't have game footage from third parties yet. I thought the footage from the third parties titles looked a little lo-fi compared to the actual WiiU tech demo footage.
...and the actual WiiU product probably won't look much better. They'll probably up the texture quality like what happens with PC ports of console games, but multiplatform titles aren't going to look that much drastically better on WiiU.

The WiiU looks better than that. This isn't stupid of Nintendo, they have no other way of going about it.
They could have not shown video of third party games if they didn't have any third party games to show.

There's a big difference between the way video graphics look and gameplay graphics look. Until they show real game footage, I don't care about the Wii U. People can hype the bird scene but all it showed was that Wii U displays HD. I just have a feeling that they arent exactly going far enough to get rid of what made the Wii "childish".

Sounds like you think the Bird demo was pre-rendered CGI.
The bird demo was rendered in real-time, and so was the Zelda demo, so yes, this is quite representative of the gameplay that can come from this system, especially the Zelda demo.
And if you really thought that the two videos were CGI then Nintendo did a pretty good job with those graphics wouldn't you think?

I think he may have meant that a tech demo developed solely for the purpose of eye-wowing you would look much better than an actual fully-developed game with game mechanics and an entire world to explore....especially by third parties. And that makes sense. But that doesn't mean the graphics will be that much worse.

All depends how third party games look. That's what killed the Wii for me. Hey, I'm not trying to trash it yet. But they have to prove it to me this time. I'm not jumping on or off any bandwagons until I see much more. I just think that the people who are gushing all over it, will be sorely disappointed. Presentations always look awesome. I'm not saying it will be much worse.. It may very well be amazing, but you know that what they showed was the absolute best they could do at the time.

I only care about a new Super Smash Bros. at the moment. Won't be anything special, I know, but at least we're getting a handheld version HECKS YEAH!

Luigi's Mansion 2 is looking fiiiiiiiine. It's odd that the rooms all have lights when you enter them, but I've been waiting for this for ten years and I'll take what I can get.

Games I want (in no particular order):

    Super Mario 3D
The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword
    Professor Layton 4
    Paper Mario 4
    Luigi's Mansion 2
    Super Smash Bros. 4

In other words, all Nintendo games.

    Arkham City
    R&C A41
    Madden 12
    NHL 12
    JP
Colonial Marines(whom didnt allow recording of the demo it seems...all the sites just have stills and written reviews)
might check out Saints Row 3... I want to see exactly how "over the top insane" it is.

When they do one of those demos, they literally optimize every second of the video to look as good as possible. The parts of models that you never see in video are likely not even built or textured. It's all basically just an illusion to show what you can technically do in real-time, but no game would ever look like that unless it had horrible "Press A to continue" gameplay.

You know how big budget fighting games typically have ultra detailed environments and character models? That's because they have so little else that they need to render that they can go way overboard rendering the few things on screen that there are. Same deal with tech demos.

    .

Did they actually announce this? I hope so .. I like those games.

I watched the entire Nintendo press conference and I didn't see any mention of Paper Mario anywhere.

It was in the 3DS new game montage. I don't think they talked about it.

I don't really understand the concept of selling a 3D game based on two dimensional-shaped characters.

The 2D will probably stand out ten million times more in a 3D game.

Well... yes ... and no .. it will be kind of cool having them be 2D standing out in varying depths... Almost like a shadow box diorama
  • edited June 2011
FYI go to the 3ds eshop, and you can see a 3d trailer for Paper Mario if that helps.

It's actually really awesome. The whole premise of Paper Mario is "2D characters in 3D worlds,"* so making the 3D levels into actual 3D really amplifies the effect. There's a 3D trailer for it on the 3DS store, and it's awesome, there's a part with parachuting Bob-ombs and they're all over the foreground and background and it's really quite striking. I'm really looking forward to it.

Couple other things I've noticed are that they seem to have returned to classic Mario enemies (unlike the new weird enemies of the last couple Paper Mario games), and that Mario doesn't seem to have any sort of partner this time, though both of these could just be because the trailer takes place early in the game, or because the game is still in progress, or because whatever the new characters are, they are secret.

*The lack of 3D worlds is why Super Paper Mario is so conceptually terrible, by the way. The game came out half-decent but it completely missed every element that made Paper Mario any good

Did you watch the trailer or see any Screenshots? We've seen two partners, a Toad and a Chain-Chomp.

Paper Mario is nice. The art style is really unique, and the gameplay is pretty much perfect at being both fun and infuriatingly difficult at the same time.

Reminds me of the Penny Arcade comic from last years E3.
    Mainly the nintendo part.

Same goes for those little demos that ATI and NVidia put on the discs that come with their graphics cards, they look fantastic, better than Crysis Warhead on the top settings, but no /game/ would ever be able to do it.

Have you ever seen a pop up book?
  • edited June 2011
Yeah. That's a book. Not a game. Of course, I hate Paper Mario anyway. Long before the 3DS.
  • edited June 2011
    Why? What's wrong with it?

Yes, and that's the style said game is going for.

Mario is bad enough most of the time. I mean, I enjoy the old NES games and SMW but anything else is just too much. And a Mario game with everything made out of paper? It's just a little too annoying.

Right. Which I think is stupid.

A game can be made to look like a book. Honestly I think you're being rather narrow-minded. I honestly don't understand your complaint.

I haven't played the Paper Mario games, but I don't get it either.

It's just an RPG series. A good RPG series, it's true. The "paper" look is just an artistic angle on it. In some ways it reminds me of Super Mario RPG for the SNES.

Of course, if you hadn't played it then you wouldn't really understand why it's fun. A lot of games are like that.

Mario games with an actual story... whats not to like? The paper thing is not really a major thing.
  • edited June 2011
It often looks like glitches. I would favour a Origami Mario, if it has to be Mario again, game instead. But who cares as long as there is Pikmin 3 on the horizon.

Prince of Persia is bad enough most of the time. I mean, I enjoy the old PC games and the Sands of Time but anything else is just too much. And a Prince of Persia game where you can't die? It's just a little too annoying.

Dead or Alive is bad enough most of the time. I mean... no wait, the Extreme editions ARE actually bad.

So what you're saying here is that Musically Inspired is closed-minded.

*shrug* All I can say is that I've played various RPGs, including having beaten Paper Mario and Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door, and I like the Paper Mario games.

I still say that the gameplay often reminds me of Super Mario RPG, and I liked that game too.

Paper Mario is just an RPG. If you don't like RPGs, you won't like it. If you do like RPGs, the fact that it's Mario or that it uses a different art style shouldn't make much of a difference. The first two Paper Mario games (and Super Mario RPG) even have turn-based combat. True, the fact that it's Mario adds a level of nostalgic value for me as a long-time gamer, but if you're indifferent to Mario I don't see why it should matter either way.

What? There was one post between the last post in the 'debate' and yours. Hardly too late.

And my favorite game period is the first Paper Mario. So I disagree completely with you, Musically Inspired.
