This intrigues me. HD remakes of the original 7 games if the first goes well, plus all new titles being planned? This is how it's done, folks.

Pretty sick. Looking forward to the trophy for dying of an STD (/overused LSL joke).

About time that a franchise from the alpha dog of classic adventure games (Sierra) came back to show us how it's done.

Awesome. Anything that's good news for adventure games is good news for me.

Also, I'd just like to mention that Leisure Suit Larry isn't the only classic adventure series that could benefit from an HD remake. The fact that I'm posting this on the forum for the company that's bringing back King's Quest may or may not be related. ;)

Holy crap...I am surprised, shocked, and amazed by this. This is FANTASTIC!

If these sell like hotcakes I can die happy with a brand new title of Larry from Al. :)
  • edited October 2011
So happy... I think the art looks... OK... but I am really pleased that its getting released on multiple platforms... I really hope it does well so they do more.

After all of the years waiting, Al lowe finally does something for the video games again? Now thats one way to celebrate Columbus day. This outta be interesting to say the least.

Looks great! LSL is badly in need of a remake, where I don't have to guess what a 3-pixel item is supposed to be (a particular annoyance I remember).
  • edited October 2011
This news is amazing! I was afraid Leisure Suit Larry was gonna rot in a watery grave!

I'm particulary thrilled about new installments in the series being made, if the remakes sell. I'd love for them to take some design aspects from Love for Sail, and improve upon them.

    Damn, this is great news!
I'm really looking forward to playing part 4 in HD!

If these sell well enough, is there the chance of Lust in Space FINALLY getting made then?
  • edited October 2011
This is great news indeed! I've played these since the time of the original text adventures, can't wait to see the remakes!

I'm especially looking forward to the new games! But I'd love a HD remake of part 7 too. That game is one of my favorite Adventure Games from all time, so I'd love to see all the (gorgeous) art in HD and with more colours!
  • edited October 2011
Looks very interesting. Thanks for the heads up.

Yeah Larry 7 is one of my favorite adventure games too Joop.

Just thought I ask this regarding on this. Are they going to have a cheat way for obtaining money? One of the problems I had with playing the first LSL title was that I needed to gamble in order to get my money. Either way, would be easier for me to have a cheat or something.

Still. Great to hear that this is happening.
  • edited November 2011
I have a feeling the gambling thing will still be in there though .

Leisure suit Larry has jumped on the bandwagon... I thought we were already getting this larry game.... Oh well.. I am dropping $100 on it anyway.. because I want the extras, I am a fan of Al Lowe's games AND I want to support this type of thing.

...why is there a "add $15 for international shipping" on a digital download?

    Well, whatever. Pledged... something.
  • edited April 2012
They addressed that goofup in update #1 you do not have to add that.
  • edited April 2012
    Ah. Missed that.
  • edited April 2012
I wish this was for a brand new Larry game.. but I still do not feel bad about dropping $100 on a remake of a remake of a adaptation of another game.
  • edited April 2012
I wish I could donate to this, but money's extremely tight at the moment.

I do feel like a dick about not donating, though. If that helps them any.
  • edited April 2012
Yeah.. at this very moment I do not have $100 to spare on silly things like this but I will be able to manage it in 29 days.

havnt got a problem with kickstarter games at all normally inaway we help develope the game hence most the games done through kickstarter are free normally.
  • edited April 2012
I concur with the kickstarter system. Not that big of a fan of it. It kinda reminds me of a ponzi scheme. Edit: Apparently FAQ for Kickstarter admits it is technichally a 'pirate pyramid scheme'. So somewhat dubious legality. Then again not sure it fits classic pyramid scheme. But with little more research they are already under one or two lawsuits over the issue.

However, I think maybe official for KQ1-4, PQ1-2 (the original PQ1 EGA, not based on VGA), and SQ2-3 might be nice. This is assuming thr remakes were done in HD hires art... Like the LSL updates?

I don't see much need to update games that were originally VGA right away, although it would be akin to the MI special editions (Infact I'd prefer the ability to switch versions on the fly seen in those games with these kinds of updates.)

Gotta be careful with updating space quest IV and 5 to avoid messing up the EGA/VGA jokes... Or at least update the jokes to HD/VGA. Also keep thr ability I switch to the old versions of the game.

My biggest issue on the LSL Kickstarter thing is that Replay Games were ALREADY working on the LSL remakes. They had even announced, last Fall, that they were remaking the whole series in HD.

And now that they see the Double Fine Adventure, Wasteland 2, and Takedown project succeed, they decide to launch a Kickstarter for LSL???

    Yeah, right.

Asking people to fund a project you were developing anyway, really, Al?

Who are you concurring with? Nobody questioned the Kickstarter system, only this particular project. Kickstarter is nothing at all like a Ponzi scheme and I seriously doubt its legality is dubious. The lawsuit that's been in the news is about a patent for crowdsourcing, not about problems within the system. It wouldn't surprise me if there are or will be lawsuits concerning liability in the event of a major project fail, but Kickstarter's TOS makes it pretty clear that it does not guarantee or take responsibility for delivery of rewards. I suspect that's sufficient to indemnify them against any claims.

Like everything else in this world, it's up to participants to understand what they're doing and what they can expect in return when they hand over their money. If people find these projects interesting and are willing to participate given the terms, it's good there's a system that facilitates contributions. For myself, I'm unlikely to give to any but the most solid and "special" projects; so far only the DFA has met those qualifications.

Yeah, that's something else that put me off about the project.

I pretty much concur with you, not to 'fund' LSL games... I won't be 'funding' it in this manner.

If remakes were to be made, this is not the way I would support them...

Although personally, no need for remakes, better to make new games.

...and personally, if there is a game to come out, I'll fund it when it is out, if I want it... I won't fund something that potentialy might not see the light of day, with possible risk.

BTW, what I meant by potentialy 'dubious' is that claiming one is a 'pyramid scheme' when pyramid schemes are actually illegal in many countries, at least on paper... One only has to look at the legal definition of 'pyramid scheme' as a scheme designed to fail, with people at the top collecting funds at the expensive of others. Doesn't stop companies like Cutco Knives from existing though... It's not generally something one would be willing to admit to being, LOL.

Their FAQs answer your "Why now?", "Why remake?" and "Why mobiles?" questions.
  • edited April 2012
Kickstarter? What exactly does that mean?
  • edited April 2012
I wasn't sure about this at first, but their recent FAQ updates made the whole thing more interesting to me, so I put in some filthy lucre.

If they can somehow convince Scott Murphy to come out of video-game retirement then it will be worth every penny.

That's definitely a wise policy. I had no trouble making an exception for the DFA project because the developers have something at risk themselves. I mean, Double Fine is already a going concern, with a current, recent track record for releasing high-quality games with Metacritic scores in the 80s known for their distinctive style and humor; plus the studio has a largely favorable reputation among gamers, for being responsive and playing fair with them -- there's a lot of good will there they put effort into acquiring. I don't think they would risk any of that lightly. So... I was willing to take the chance. :)

Apparently they already have, the only thing they have to sort out is working out acquiring the rights to use the Space Quest license.

I think it begs the question, though, why did they announce a game before they had concrete plans and funding to make it? And now they're talking, speculatively, about other projects for which they don't even have rights! That borders on slimy AFAIC. I'm sorry, but this Replay company has utterly failed to gain my respect or confidence.

From the looks of the situation, I think they got stuck and didn't have many options.. There's no question that the scenario for a Kickstarter campaign could have been better than it is, but running with it this way seems to have been their only choice.

I think it's pretty admirable that this is basically former Sierra employees trying to make it happen... Ideally, they'd have a company with a better logo/name/website (all of which seem to provoke unfortunate skepticism) --but it hardly seems worth sitting back and hoping that they try this again.

Schafer talked about his success in terms of "having a good story to tell" and they're struggling to pull together that narrative.. As unfortunate as all that is, this may be the only chance Sierra gets -- and I'll put my faith in Al Lowe / Josh Mandel / Paul Trowe / Scott Murphy to eventually become the best possible custodians of these games... even if it looks thrown together right now.

-- And here's an amazing Scott Murphy interview.

That is a pretty big only thing, but if they do manage it, that would be awesome.
  • edited April 2012
I'm looking forward to this but I'll be paying for a copy once it's been released. I can only afford so much these days and my current Kickstarter cash is reserved for the return of Tex Murphy.
  • edited April 2012
I wish I could pledge money to every one of these projects. But money is tight around here.
  • edited April 2012
Yeah that is the bad thing about these bandwagon jumpers.. I wonder what will be next..

I loved the Larry games though.. They were always funny... I am looking forward the them getting around to updating 2-6 more.... Then making a legitimate Larry 8.
  • edited April 2012
Yeah, money is a little tight atm for me too but I can afford the minimum $15. Plus, you don't get charged until the end of the pledge date, which is a month away. I would love to see a remake of LSL1. I'm glad Al Lowe is behind this.

Why would it still be going?

It's another essentially dead IP from the glory days of Sierra...

I'm not sure if its seen a rerelease in years... Not even under Vivendi... No one knows if the rights were kept or sold off to other parties... Maybe the Coles retain some of the copyrights, as they have used elements from the games on their School for Heroes (including use of some of the characters, races, places, from the games, but sometimes radically reimagined), which is copyrighted to Transolar Entertainment. But apparently do not have rights to the games themselves... School of Heroes website is currently closed for renovation, and there is a promise of a text based adventure/rpg? game version in the future maybe by 2013. Sounds like a MUD type thing... They are also working on a classic adventure apparently, but haven't released any names or information on it yet.

They were also at one point going to attempt to release a series of novels based on the Quest for Glory series as well, but that fell through.

This may be an issue of copyright limbo, where two parties share the copyrights, and its unclear who has rights to what.
