this may be the only chance Sierra gets -- and I'll put my faith in Al Lowe / Josh Mandel / Paul Trowe / Scott Murphy to eventually become the best possible custodians of these games... even if it looks thrown together right now.

See, this is exactly why I made the criticism I did about the Replay quote in your opening post -- they're leaving people with the implication that this is the resurrection of Sierra. I'm skeptical that there's any truth in the statement that they're "in the middle of negotiations" for KQ etc. and the info on the Kickstarter page now seems to imply otherwise. Even if they have such ambitions, they have no business talking about licenses they don't have.

I feel really bad for Larry fans that they didn't keep the focus there. The video was good but I think Lowe should get out in front on this, give the impression that his vision and initiative are driving it, and share a little more about what remake/reload/re-imagining of LSL1 really means.

Why would it still be going?

It's another essentially dead IP from the glory days of Sierra...

I'm not sure if its seen a rerelease in years... Not even under Vivendi... No one knows if the rights were kept or sold off to other parties...

    ...

This may be an issue of copyright limbo, where two parties share the copyrights, and its unclear who has rights to what.
On the bright side, if absolutely nothing is done with the trademark for a certain amount of time (not the case for KQ, SQ etc. as they have seen releases on Steam + GoG), then I think the trademark lapses and could be reclaimed by the original creators. Then again, I'm not a lawyer so I could be wrong.

Trademark is not the same thing as copyright. Copyrights are sustained for a long time in most places and then ownership doesn't "revert" to anyone; it goes into the public domain. Original creators as I think you meant it have no legal standing. If they created the work while employed by or under contract to some other entity, that entity owns the IP and the individuals that actually developed it have no claims on it.

Funding seems to have slowed WAY down.. I think it may be an uphill battle until the deadline.... I REALLY hope it makes it because any future publisher WILL use this against the franchise.

I noticed that it seemed to have just died out. I looked at it this morning and started to be concerned whether it would even be successful at all. :/

I've pledged my $100. I seriously hope this makes its goal--the pitch video was great, and I really want my boxed copy. :D
  • edited April 2012
I'm going to pledge a hundred. I feel like an investor. I'm glad classics are coming back for a new generation...well...a skipped...you know what I like games.
  • edited April 2012
I've pledged my $115. Good luck Al!!!
  • edited April 2012
Oh but I love the LSL games! (They're the second Sierra games I played, don't you know!) I'll have to see if I can't pledge at least $15.

(crikey, the prizes go up to $50,000?! Almost a bargain!)
  • edited April 2012
you will not be charged until May 2 so you definitely have some time to round up some money.

I don't know... I mean, I'd love to see this done, but I really don't like the post-DF kickstarter band-wagon. Let's face it, the amount of projects started on Kickstarter, both from industry old-time professionals and more younger people, has sky-rocketed after Double Fine's success, and this leads to over-saturation. Double Fine Adventure - awesome, Wasteland 2 - awesome, but by this point, personally I'm like 'I will not even think about spending money anymore', and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Patience is also important.
  • edited April 2012
I do not blame them jumping on the bandwagon.. For me it's not annoyance from over saturation, it more I just can't possibly fund all of them so generously... So I have to choose the ones most important to me.. DF and Larry $100.. Jane Jensen and tex maybe $15 - $50 after my bills are taken care of first.

For me it just feels like Al Lowe deserves the win the most, the industry really seemed to have shit on the guy and he, more so then any other developer has always answered every bit of fanmail and provided free material and games for his old titles.. The genuinely seems like a really nice man and that should be rewarded

It's an adventure game series that was created by Al Lowe at Sierra (which was a (friendly) rival in the adventure game market of LucasArts, the latter of which is the company at which most of the initial staff from Telltale worked).

Ah, cool. I might just drop $15 or maybe even $75 on it. Seems interesting.

Monkey Island, Kings Quest, Sam and Max and Leisure Suit Larry.. are my all time favorite adventure game franchises.

If the money keeps increasing at the rate it is now I estimate they will be anywhere from $100,000 to $200,000 short of their goal.. Time to spread the word again... ask all your friends and family (probably not Grandma) to back this thing.

A Kickstarter update: new rewards (T-shirts included) and the official forums: http://forums.replaygamesinc.com/

    Hooray! :p

Well, Kickstarter projects follow a pretty remarkably consistent pattern. There's an initial burst, followed by a longer period of fairly stable but low income, followed by a big burst on the final few days as the fence-sitters come in.

Actually, the drive is not doing that badly. It could certainly be better, but it's around halfway there with a fair bit of time to go. If they keep giving good video updates, and release some cool news or new rewards they should probably be ok.

Also this was in my Sub-Box today.

Still not feeling like paying for that remake. I'd rather get the collection on Steam. Or a complete new Game from this project.

Am I crazy or did they NOT actually mention what tier gets you the T-Shirt?

You're not crazy (or maybe I'm crazy too!).
I just re-read the e-mail and re-checked their Kickstarter page and there's no mention of a T-shirt in any of the tiers (at this time).
  • edited April 2012
It's Kickstarter's project of the day... might help it a bit. By the end of the day, we should have a good idea of whether this is going to pan out or not.
  • edited April 2012
They put the T-Shirt in the $40 tier they have not showed it yet but it sounds like it is going to be a Leftys Bar t-shirt.... Not a bad deal really..

Taken from the replay games boards ..

    Hi again!

Hope you guys are ready for fun, Al Lowe is going to do an AMA on reddit this Friday (the 13th) at 6pm pacific time.

We've told the moderators to expect us, so now feel free to spread the word! Friday night! It's a party!

For those of you that do not know AMA means Ask Me Anything... I guess Al will be on there for 2 hours so if there was ever a question you wanted to ask about the Larry games or Freddy Pharkas or some of his other games, Friday will be a great day for you... spread the word to all your Adventure gaming friends..

    So reddit Friday 13th

Here is a video of Josh Mandel talking about his goals for LSL...

Its NOT going to be a 1:1 remake.. its going to have all sorts of new jokes added... and fully voiced.. I do not see how anyone who is a fan of the series wouldn't want that.... This is a team of Sierra veterans trying to make it happen.. I loved the MI special editions but imagine how much cooler they would have been if they had Ron, Tim, and Dave working on new content for them... that is what could happen with this.
  • edited April 2012
It's picked up enough that I think it'll make it....barely.

I've just got round to watching the last two video updates (with Paul Trowe & Josh Mandel) both of which (though more credit has to go to Paul's video) are making me a lot more optimistic about this project and a lot more willing to give them more of my not so hard earned cash.

Why can't the friends over at Telltale, like Replay calls 'us' build the next Leisure suit larry game instead of the people of Replay games. Wouldn't it be very cool to have a LSL game similar to Tales of MI? In 3D! Of course Telltale needs the input from Al Lowe, Paul and Josh but wouldn't it be great if they would all work together?

It would. But there would be the chance we get a LSL like Jurrasic Dildo and I am not going to take that risk.

They added a new $150 tier for that much you get

    1) physical game and game box
    2) CD of the soundtrack
    3) Lefty's breath spray,
    4) Lefty's sexy lady "reveal" pen.
    5) Lefty's shot glass
    6) 4 Lefty's coasters,
    7) softcover version of the Art of Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded
    8) Leisure Suit Larry Brand Condom
    9) Lefty’s Bar t-shirt

and they revealed what the t-shirt will look like... I think its a lot cooler then the Doublefine shirt...

That new tier is pretty damn awesome. It really makes me want to up my pledge from $40 to $150, but that's a lot of money, so I'll have to think about it. I hope this is what it'll take to zoom past that half a million dollar barrier, even though it'll be a long shot away from matching the successes of DFA and Wasteland 2.
  • edited April 2012
Yeah I think it's a pretty good deal.. You get to help out and you get a bunch of cool stuff that would probably cost more then that in a merch store if they had one.

After much soul searching (yeah, right!), I upped my pledge from $100 to $150.
It is indeed an awesome new tier (and the shirt looks fantastic, too)!
