I thought we should have a thread to discuss the Elder Scrolls games, especially with Skyrim so close!

    Stop right there, criminal scum!

Wake up. Stand up. There you go. You were dreaming. What's your name?

I intended to give Oblivion a half-hour try in accordance with my attempt to play every game I bought over the summer for at least that long.

I ended up playing over twenty hours.

My conclusion is that these games are extremely addictive.

    You might wanna try Morrowind.

I've only played Oblivion but I clocked 300+ hours on that game. I'm almost afraid to play Skyrim for the sake of my social life (and my never ending list of owned games that I've yet to play) but I'll be purchasing it on day one of it's release.

I'm Still waiting for them to announce the specs so I can find out weather or not it will run on my 4 year old piece of junk.

This is why I'm glad to own a PS3. Having said that, modding Oblivion was one of the greatest aspects to the PC version, so I guess it's a case of swings and roundabouts.

I do own Morrowind, but I only played a little over an hour of it so far.

    The greatest parts of Oblivion...

    * The quest where you enter a painting - I love this section, it's right up there with the mission in Fallout 3 where you enter a black and white VR reality, or when you go into VR mode in Sam & Max: Hit the Road. Pure poetry in motion.

    * The haunted mansion quest - A really cool creepy moment in the game and it's made even better by the fact that the mansion becomes your property upon completion.
    The worst parts of Oblivion...

    * The hell gates - So irritating, so tedious, so repetitive, so boring.

    * Horse armour - The standard by which all lame DLC shall always be judged.

I don't know how this happened, but somehow in Oblivion, where I left off I ended up in this Alice in Wonderland land of Chaos and wonder, trying to defeat a Cyclops with it's own tears. Or maybe it was bones? I can't remember.

    I was so confused.

I'm getting Skyrim for the PS3!! I still played Oblivion and have a lot of hours clocked into it. Before that I had Morrowind for the XBOX and played the hell out of that one too. The cool thing about the Elder Scrolls is just how much better they get. Just when you think the game you were playing was awesome the next one is announced and it has all these new features that just make the already addicting gameplay and world much more addicting.

I like how you don't really have a class anymore. You level up what you use so you don't have to worry about that leveling up that extra skill you never really use. The new duel weapons is a nice touch too. Using two swords, or two spells at the same time is going to be awesome.

    It's going to be awesome.

I hope the Dark Brotherhood quests are as fun as they were in Oblivion. By far my favourite questline in the game.

that was the expansion area. The portal to the shivering isles.

Just don't do the main quest. If you never go to Kvatch these gates will not spawn.

Anyone remember the falling wizard from Morrowind? The one who drops a journal about his Scroll of Icarian Flight. That part had me turning 'round in panic until the body dropped.

Or the part of Thieves Guild quest where you had to steal one of the elder scrolls? That one was bloody awesome. Weird monks everywhere.

I'm pretty sure Bethesda said that it wouldn't be that much more demanding than Oblivion.

You were confused because you didn't know anything about the series' supernatural lore and stumbled into a full-on game expansion(which itself had an MSRP of $30 on release on top of the $50-60 game) that deals exclusively in that aspect of the series without knowing what in the world you were doing. You probably went there because it creates a new journal entry pointing at the gates either when you install the expansion or(if you start the game while installed) when you escape the prison.

I don't really know why, but I can't ever seem to really get into Oblivion.

It may be that it takes a while to get to the good bits.

I can play Fallout 3 and New Vegas for hours, and those games are built on the same engine.

I still pre-ordered Skyrim though, as when I eventually get a new PC, I can give the series another shot. And it does indeed look incredibly awesome! :D

(Its one of those games where you need to play it in long sessions.)

Yeah...that's probably it. I think I might just leave that crazy land of chaos for later when I get back to the game.

I was sucked into Oblivion. I kind of stopped playing on the Shivering Isles, though. Just too difficult. Everything was always a few levels above me. I gathered that I had to collect that Amber ore or whatever and somehow get it crafted into armour and weaponry that would match me with the enemies, but I just couldn't keep it up. Never did get into Morrowind or even Fallout 3. Maybe I just don't feel like I have the time. I'm totally jumping into Skyrim, though.

That's a relief so maybe I'll be able to force another year out of my 9800gt and Athlon 64 x2 :D

Personally, the best quest line in Oblivion for me was the Thieves Guild.

That was definitely my second favourite after Dark Brotherhood.

Warriors and Mages was kind of lackluster in comparison to the both of them in my opinion. Especially since I had to go through a right annoyance getting back into the Mages guild. Basically in one of the thieves quests you went to these ruins in the middle of no where and a mage lived there. Being the assassin that I was, I killed the mage sneakily. However thanks to the telepathy that everyone shares in Oblivion, the mages guild(And the guards for that matter) found out and expelled me.

The Mages' Guild questline sucked massive donkey balls for one reason above all others:

You could beat it without ever firing a spell of your own, and in fact had far better chances if you didn't use magic. The Necromancers shot Silence spells at you, so if you were a pure mage you'd be completely defenseless, while if you were a warrior you could just run up to them and smash their faces in with a hammer.

The BEST suited class for the Mages' Guild campaign was the Thief/Assassin archetype. The Necromancers all live in dark caves, making sneaking easy. Arrows enchanted(no need to use magic, it's a paid service rather than a skill in Oblivion) or poisoned with a Silence effect made the Necromancers entirely powerless. They'd run away in fear and then try to punch you to death when backed into a corner.

I'm crossed between the Thieves' Guild and Dark Brotherhood quest-lines. I think Thieves wins out by a hair, though. Probably because it seemed longer and had much more of an epic finale than any of the others. Including the main quest line.

Random question: Is it possible to do all the storylines in one playthrough or does the game get mad at you if you do that?

Absolutely, entirely possible. Personally, I found that kind of obnoxious, but yes you can do it. Uh, just don't try to do the Knights of the Nine and the Dark Brotherhood/Thieves Guild quest lines concurrently. Do the Knights of the Nine AFTER, because the pilgrimage basically cleans you of all crimes.

This is not the case in Morrowind. You have to reach a certain skill level to advance in a guild, and some guilds just plain hate each other.

Cool. I'm a little bit of a completionist, and thus would really like to do as many quest lines as possible in a single playthrough just because.

Okay yes. But theoretically you can:

Join the thieves guild before you do that one early fighters guild quest and you can finish the Temple before finishing the main quest. Then you can join & complete every single questline in Morrowind.

XBox Live had Horse Armor on sale a few weeks ago. I was tempted to get it just.. because.. it's Horse Armor.

On April Fools' Day one year, all Oblivion DLC was on sale...except Horse Armor, which became MORE expensive on that day.

    We're getting really close! lol

As a side note. This might sound silly but has anyone ever fallen asleep playing Oblivion? The music in it is so soothing when exploring the map that some times I would fall asleep while exploring the world map. lol

I can't get it. Still trying to get the Riddler's Challenges in Batman, have the new Professor Layton game to buy, and then... Skyward Sword!

I would play Oblivion if it didn't crash my video drivers in under 5 minutes every single time I run it.

I should play one of the TES games in anticipation of Skyrim.
