I just made a set of ebony armor and weapons for my companion. She looks awesome.

Also just beat a really tough Mage in. Agee we settlement. Guy would not die, kept recharging health, teleporting all around the room. I had to go in with
My companion and a Dremora to win. My reward: an impossibly awesome
Shield that absorbs 50 magic damage.

That was brilliant. Reminds me so much of my cat's constant "gifts".

Dragons just kick my ass. As does anything if I walk too far away from the starting area. Maybe I should reduce my difficulty. Or use that stupid donkey in combat. Or get a companion... But I don't want to. Because everything I achieve feels like I deserve it.

Stick with it. I stayed with the default difficulty and it can be a real bitch for quite some time but as you said, the feeling of achievement is highly gratifying. Trust me, eventually you'll become a total badass and when you do, you'll have earned it.

A bit of advice though; during the first 40 or so hours, try and work outward from Riverwood, towards Solitude and explore the surrounding areas. Try to stay away from the colder, higher up areas (for example Winterhold) until you're a higher level. After 60 hours of playing, you'll be killing giants with ease. :D

I am in the mages guil already. Got there with luck. I tried to walk around the area today and a normal mob killed me in 2 hits. Fun times.:)
Walking towards Solitude now. Have a lot of quests there (thieves Guild for example)

Ha. Yeah, I joined the mages guild early on and left Winterhold to start my first mage quest, only to get my ass handed to me by a polar bear. >D

I now have two Daedric legendary weapons, Peryite's shield Spellbreaker and Meridian's sword Dawnbreaker. I'm looking like a badass.

Hah, on the subject of the Winterhold difficulty. I pushed through it, despite still getting 2 hit killed by many of the random mobs in that area(Especially the last boss in Labyrinthia, arrrgghhhh). Was worth it though. The robe and helm you get is damn nice for a mage.

I have to admit, the difficulty was kind of annoying me while doing that questline, and prior to doing it. If only because it was just inconsistant. You could plough through some mobs in one hit, and then you'd come to a bandit chief or something and they'd plough you in 2 hits. Actually bandit chiefs are still tough even now. They're tougher than a dragon, what the hell?

The DVD is nice because installing from a DVD is faster than downloading the game through Steam.

And the game is steamworks anyway. I dont need the DVD after its installed then right?

You don't NEED it, no. I'd keep the disc around for the purposes of reinstalling faster, though.

Well yeah, I just dont want to pop it in whenever I want to play.
Ok so stop the steam download for the DVD. Maybe I can still play it tonight.
EDIT:Wow that was fast. It just booted up steam and installed it in less than a minute. Now I know how retail steamworks games work.
EDIT2: And then froze and went down to 2%.
EDIT3:And now stuck on 100. Ill just see what it does from here.
EDIT4:Bleck. Steam always freezes at 100% and restarts back to 0. Ill just install it via steam, even if it takes a while.

Those reports of lagging on the PS3 really are being blown out of all proportion. I've been playing on PS3 and am currently 80 hours into the game. During that time I've had one occurrence where the game seriously lagged. I've had a few very minor moments of lag when entering a town for the first time, but even those minor moments have been cut back greatly with the latest patch.

Basically, as per usual; the people making the extremely vocal complaints are a bunch of whiny, troll nerds. Don't let them put you off playing because they're full of shit. Calling Skyrim on PS3 "unplayable" is beyond ridiculous, as is calling the lag anything other than a minor/irrelevant issue.

So who do you want to listen to; a group of pathetic nerds who would somehow manage to find fault with perfection itself? Or myself, a level headed person who's throughly enjoying playing the game of the year?
  • edited December 2011
Well, a great game it might be, though I'd hardly call it game of the year. Not when I've seen video of the lag. Maybe it varies from system to system. If that's so, then I'm even more sure I don't want to get it until it's fixed, as I have an older PS3.

And yes, when I see video of the game at framerate that's worse than my 5+year old LAPTOP...that means someone didn't plan enough at Bethesda. That alone dropped it from Game of the Year for me. I don't care what Spike TV or G4 or what-have-you say.

I know this is sarcasm but it still makes me want to discuss statistics.

Game of the year, end of. If you want to miss out on that, then good luck to you. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to get back to playing the game of the year.

You can take your accusations of sarcasm and shove 'em! It's been statistically proven that Skyrim is the game of the year by a bunch of the statistically finest scientists, who specialise in the field of statistical analysis. Game of the year.

You can say Game of the Year all you want. I do not have to agree. That's something that's subjective, not objective. For one person, it might be Skyrim. For someone else, it's Arkham City. For another person, it's Assassin's Creed. For another, Zelda. For another...some cutesy little cartoon downloadable game or something. See what I mean? It comes down to personal taste. I have no doubt, based on what I've seen of friends playing Skyrim, that it is a fantastic game that, when the issues are ironed out, I'll be more than happy to play...after I finish Mass Effect 2 that is.
  • edited December 2011
But for the majority it's Skyrim. That's why it's called Game of the Year.

Not that I care what the majority thinks. I'm just saying.

That's a well thought out argument and a very eloquently made point but if you'd allow me to make a rebuttal in kind...

Is Arkham City actually at all improved from the mediocre stealth game with "meh" beat-em-up component that Arkham Asylum was? I mean, the whole thing was nicely presented, but the actual playtime was pretty shallow.
  • edited December 2011
If you didn't like Arkham Asylum you won't like Arkham City but it's my personal favorite of the year.

    So help a noob out.

The mage stone says that you learn magic abilities faster.

How does that work? Does it mean magic just levels up faster, since you learn abilities through tomes, and magic abilities are through actual leveling up, or are there actual abilities I can learn overtime?
EDIT:Also, whats the key to grabbing items? Not actually adding an item to my inventory, but just grabbing an item and tossing it.

Activating the mage stone means that you'll level up your magical abilities faster than you would otherwise. So when casting a fireball, your destruction skill will level up faster. That's how you increase skills in Skyrim; through exercising the relevant action.

For example, if you were to use your fireball magic on enemies for two hours of gameplay, let's suppose your destruction skill rises from 20 to 22. With the mage stone active, that skill would hypothetically rise from 20 to 23 over the same period of time. Keep in mind that if you activate a different stone; the mage stone will deactivate, as you can only have one stone active at any one time.

As for picking up items; simply hold down the "use" button/key (the same one you press to add items to your inventory. Basically; hold the button/key down for a couple of seconds, as opposed to tapping it.

I hope that helps. Happy adventuring. :)

    Cool on that one. Thanks!

Also, I noticed that in menus and stuff, if you rebind keys, the menus, DONT change the key. It took me 5 minutes to realise that when I was trying to favorite spells(I switched the "F" and "Z" keys for ease of shoutings, didnt realise it rebinded favorites.)

Honestly, I enjoyed Witcher 2 more than I was/am enjoying Skyrim, even if I'm voting on the 360/PC version(Sorry, no chance in hell that the PS3 version of GOTY, I ain't praising them for making one of the worst ports I have seen), Skyrim is probably in my top 5 though(Again 360/PC only). Not that it matters, it's going to get overall GOTY everywhere regardless. Meaning Bethesda got away with releasing a shoddy version again.

The most fantastic glitch I've ever seen yet.

Arkham City was great. It did improve a bit on the game mechanics and added a little bit more items (smoke pellets!) but for some reason it didn't feel as awesome as Asylum did. Asylum is a smaller game to be sure. Arkham City is a much bigger more open world type game with side missions and lots of other bells and whistles, but I had more fun with Arkham.

And I'll NEVER buy DLC again for a game unless I'm absolutely sure what I'm getting and/or I get a good review from a friend. I thought that the Robin and Nightwing DLCs came with their own campaigns. Nope. They're basically their own skins with a couple unique abilities for challenge maps. That's it. $6.99 each. Complete waste of money. I'd have more fun with the cheaper Batman skin pack that comes with like 10 skins or something.

So, yeah. It's a great game. Some game mechanics improved on the original's and some things are more fun. There's certainly a lot more to do. But for some reason I prefer the simplicity of Asylum. Both good games, though, and lend themselves extremely well to the established lore and canon. But yeah, if you didn't like Asylum chances are you wouldn't like City either.

Have you actually played the patched PS3 version yourself? And I mean played as opposed to watching some bullshit video on YouTube?

I'm so sick of people slagging off the PS3 port. I've been playing it since launch and it's fine. GAME OF THE YEAR, PS-MUTHA FUCKIN'-3 VERSION INCLUDED! Gaaahhhhhh!!

Yes I have, I can take a screenshot of my 50hour save, and my copy of the game if you don't believe me.

Be happy you don't have the problem. Not everyone is as lucky as you. Get over it.

The reasons I've heard most people like Asylum better was due to its tighter focus. City is bigger and there's a ton to do but you lose some of the tight pacing and narrative of Asylum. Lessens the tension.

Also, today I saw a Mammoth floating in the sky next to a dragon.
