I'm confused. Cave Story WAS made by new blood. In Japan, even, where a lack of individuaism and entrepreneurial spirit means a lot less new blood than we have.

Cave Story is NOT shit. It's really very good.

It wouldn't surprise me. I've yet to play it but I've come across a few people who slagged off 'Deathspank' and that game was great!

Agreed. Also, there's too much dialogue but it's absolutely NOT a "shit" game (from an objective point of view).

    He meant The Cave.

Now now, The Cave wasn't bad. It just had about 67,486 times more backtracking than was needed.

Cave Story, on the other hand, is fucking amazing and anyone who argues is clearly a communist and should be shot on sight. Preferably in the cock.

Back on topic, here's the list of projects I've backed. Italics means that I've received the finished product.

Double Fine Adventure (aka: Broken Age)
Make Leisure Suit Larry Come Again! (aka: Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded)
    Shadowrun Returns
    Grim Dawn
    Echoes of Eternia
    Boot Hill Heroes
    Erythia: Shattered Dreams

    Energy Hook
    Nelly Cootalot: The Fowl Fleet
    AR-K
    Armikrog
    A Hat in Time

I haven't listed the ones that weren't successful or were cancelled, because this list would be a fair bit longer as a result. Looking at this though, I'm stunned how many projects I've backed!

@Darth Marsden - Glad to see that you're a fellow backer of Project Fedora. Out of curiosity, did you pledge enough to have your name in the credits too?

I did. Most of the ones I've backed will have their ending credits graced by my name. ;)

The folks at MobyGames are going to have a fun time inscribing the credits for all these Kickstarter games. :D

Holy shit, Marsden! That's a lot of projects!

    1. Double Fine Adventure (a.k.a. Broken Age)

    Yeah. That's about it.

Ah yes, I remember you posting about that. I have two words for you... "very" and "jealous".

Did you get 'round to reading it. If so, what was it like? How would it have played out on the big screen?

Sadly I only pledged $15 for 'Broken Age' so 'Project Fedora' will be the only title I have my name attached to. Still, that's pretty awesome. When I sat down to play 'Under a Killing Moon' as a 12 year old kid, if somebody told me that in 20 years time I would be playing a sequel with my name in the credits, I never would have believed them.

Man, Kickstarter is such a brilliant concept!

Haven't touched it since that picture. I didn't want to damage it. I'm sure it was awesome though.

Since I couldn't find an indiegogo thread..

I have heard good things about this one. They want to make a game in RPG Maker VX Ace and it's only 600 dollars they need to meet.

Wow, I'm surprised there's no thread on it yet. Bill Tiller has finally started a Kickstarter campaign to release a prequel to the Vampyre Story, which is entitled "Year One": http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/876324751/a-vampyre-story-year-one

There are some pretty interesting rewards out there (like a Mona figurine or a live phone call with Mona, Bill and Froderick), the trailer is also a must-see ;)

Nelly Cootalot now has a demo!!

    http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/315061806/nelly-cootalot-the-fowl-fleet-retro-pirate-adventu

All right, not really really a demo. Just some hints at the potential. One short scene with a few clicks... but nice. REALLY nice.

Shadowrun Returns, the game that embarrassed and prostituted its backers by turning out as having been planned a Steam exclusive game right from the beginning, now has a fixed release date of July 25th.

The plan supposedly is that you can download the Steam version on the 24th, but only play it on the 25th while the backer exclusive crippled DRM free version is only available on the 25th.

This, of course, must mean several things.
    1. The 'early download' opportunity will lure more backers away from downloading and playing their DRM fee copy.
    2. Knowing full well how reliably Valve honors its 'simultaneous release' agreements, we can assume that Steam players will be able to already play on the 24th ("Oops"), or at least the 25th is calculated as a midnight release in the most convenient time zone.
    3. Seing how every possible step is taken by Harebrained Schemes to direct their backers to Steam, we can assume that they won't be able to supply even remotely the bandwith necessary to supply all their backers with the DRM free version via their own platform. Expect chaos to ensue.

Once again well done, Harebrained Schemes.

You really don't know anything about Steam, do you?
More often than not the Steam version releases last. Actually the only time that wasn't the case ever was The Walking Dead, because TTG couldn't get their shit together. And even then it released on Steam on the release day at the normal office times at VALVe.

I gotta say... this extreme hatred of Steam is pretty weird.

Also, from what I understand, most of the things that were "cut" from the non-Steam version of Shadowrun Returns are the things that would be incredibly difficult to implement without a large network like Steam. Okay, so you won't get the future DLC and won't be able to use user-created content that includes DLC. I don't see how this is invalidating a purchase. I mean, I probably won't use either of those things even with my Steam purchase. You still get the core game, and probably at some point the DLC will be released on GoG or something anyways. I don't think it will forever be Steam exclusive.
  • edited June 2013
The reason people are upset is that they were promised a fully DRM free experience, which Steam most definitely is not, and the actual DRM free version they're getting is not the entire package.

As you say, it likely won't remain that way forever - I'm almost positive the fans will find a way to make the DRM free version as capable (if not more so) than the Steam one - but that's at a theoretical point in the future, and until then the DRM free version is going to be the lesser one.

I can see how people would be upset. I may not agree with how upset they are, but I can at least see where they're coming from.
  • edited June 2013
I personally don't see a big problem in delivering the DLc without Steam. Do a Humble Bundle page with a DRM free version and an optional steam key and do the DLC like a patch. They do know what a patch is, I hope.

Don't get me wrong here. My post wasn't directed against Steam [for a change]. If Microsoft decides to render gifts from heaven to the platform, and Harebrained Schemes readily consents to that idea without informing their backers first and foremost, Valve of all participating companies is least to blame.

So Darth Marsden backed Kingdom - The Clans. I hope you found my writing funny and characters likable.
  • edited June 2013
It was perfectly enjoyable little game, and I'm very glad I backed it.

I just unbacked Armikrog and backed A Hat in Time instead. It looks really cool.

Meanwhile AVS isn't doing well at all, but Bill Tiller seems suprisingly optimistic in his latest update.

Awwww, I hate it when people 'unback'. There seriously should be a fine for that. Pledge means pledge after all. :(
  • edited June 2013
Yeah, but I didn't know the shit I now know about TenNapel when I backed, so I don't feel bad about it. Why do creative people like him, Card and Hamsun have to be so unlikeable? I might pick up Armikrog somewhere down the line if it ends up getting made, but I want no part in funding it.
  • edited June 2013
This is making me sad. I don't care if Orson Scott Card gets kicked off of Superman, there are plenty of other Superman comics. I wouldn't even have cared if the Ender's Game movie got cancelled. There are plenty of other movies.

But there aren't really any other claymation adventure games. Certainly not with the spirit of The Neverhood. I care about Armikrog, I want it to come out, and it needs to be informed by Doug Tennapel's creative mind, even if the rest of his mind is all effed up.

I also draw a big line between where Tennapel is a "definition of marriage" conservative and a jerk about it, where Orson Scott Card is an active supporter of the sort of groups that want to make gayness in general illegal. I feel like there's a distinction there, at least in terms of how much I worry about giving them money.

It's disappointing all around that people are like that, and I guess you have to draw the line where you feel comfortable, but I feel like the money pledged toward Armikrog is going to go towards making Armikrog, and that Armikrog will be a worthwhile contribution to the medium.
  • edited June 2013
What's the big deal with Tennapel now? Can somebody explain?
  • edited June 2013
I think he's homophobic? Or is that someone else?

EDIT: He's against gay marriage, amongst other things. Here's a look at what he's said.
  • edited June 2013
    Wow. Just wow.
  • edited June 2013
So he has a difference of opinion?

    So what?

If he's not funneling huge funds toward an anti gay crusade I don't see the issue.
  • VainamoinenVainamoinen Moderator

The firm US superiority complex is one thing that might raise an eyebrow, especially from all the potential backers living in those assorted other, obviously vastly inferior countries, but comparing gay marriage to "men taking a dump in the ladies' room"?

flesk's unbacking is herewith excused. :o

His attitude is the thing that's keeping me from wanting to support his endevours. It's OK if he has a differing opinion, but he doesn't have to be a jerk about it. All of his comments on the situation were vile, but the AIDS joke in the comment secion of the gaygamer article was really crossing the line.
