What is your opinion about TellTale at this point?

edited August 2012 in The Walking Dead
I'm sure the community has varying opinions about TellTale at this point. What do you, the player, have to say regarding their execution of the Walking Dead Game so far?

Personally, I've done my best to remain hopeful, thinking that the two-month wait for episode 2 was typical of TellTale's release strategy. We finally get episode 2 and, lo' and behold, we have an assortment of bugs to contend with. Some are having their saves corrupted, choices from the previous episode don't tranfer, some were unable to start the game to begin with, and others are simply unable to download the second episode at all. On top of this, many are already speculating that the third episode won't release until next month!

My hope is running out, and disappointment is gradually setting in at this point.

    Meh,

I say leave them alone and let them do their job.

They already got paid so no amount of belly aching gonna do. They don't have to do anything special for your dime anymore. I was satisfied with the second installment, the series is looking good and that's all I can ask for.

I am not a fan of episode release and if telltale were to make another game I like but on episode release I would just hold my horses (and my money) and wait until the product is finished before I pay them.

But other than that I don't plan anything around them folks. They gonna do them so I just gotta do me.

Don't get me started, they haven't released the PS3 version for the UK :(

It'll be interesting to read people's views though

I still do have appreciation for what they have released so far and am willingly going to play the remaining subsequent episodes. The Walking Dead is a good game, but it is just a shame how TellTale has proceeded in releasing their title.

Me too because I'm hooked on the game already. if I could walk away from it, I would.

I just want to get what i paid for and get the hell out. As soon as the series is out/they refund season passes i'm not looking back at TT.

disappointed in them. lied about the release dates, put out a very bugged/glitchy product, haven't seen any announcements regarding the game deletes for ps3 users. i like this game but after it's done, i'll never support them again

I think story-wise and gameplay-wise its a very solid experience.

On the tech side of things however, its horrible.
Full of glitches and gamebreaking bugs with save files.. I feel like stuff like this should be patched ASAP ( I aged by 10 years, dealing with blackscreen shenanigans myself ) or not be in the release version at all.

Also seems like TellTale is kinda passive about all these problems. Might be just my lack of informations tho.

They have been a little too quiet in most instances since the release of the first episode (or so the forum would indicate).

Am Pissed, Disapointed, angry at them not only did they lie but they have no idea when it will be released for the uk, as i said before I feel robbed, and they will have to give me a refund

P.S this is the last time I'm ever going to buy a game made from them.

You certainly aren't the first to state that this is your last TellTale product. With the advent of the the Walking Dead title in TellTale's repetoire of released games, the company has no doubt recieved many new additions to the community. It's a shame that these same customers may never come back...

I think they should have finished all 5 episodes and released them in one go, now i am left wanting, and with sooo many other great games coming, well...

I still like 'em, though they should certainly be more vocal about delays and such.

I kind of like the episodic model. While it holds back the development in some respects (each episode is made under a small budget and tight schedule), it also has clear advantages in others (like the usual increase in quality over the course of a series because criticism of earlier episodes is applied to later episodes. Wouldn't be possible if everything was done in one go).

I don't know if there's any of you that haven't bothered to look at the rest of their catalog, but episodic gaming is just what they do. It's something they've been doing it for years and it's how they carved out their niche. I've played plenty of their other games so I was already quite familiar with how they make their episodic games before I picked up TWD.

Still, that delay was the longest delay they've had in quite some time. They really should been more vocal about what the problem was.

I'm seeing a lot of new players here, I'm guessing the episodic format isn't for everyone. I got used to it and don't mind it myself as it means that I get to play some of the game earlier than I would otherwise and then theorycraft with everyone on the boards as to what might happen next, but it's still a shame to see new guys swearing off it and not enjoying it, and I can relate. I honestly have not had any real bugs to report myself, it doesn't seem to be any more buggy than a lot of big budget games I can name, but maybe I've just been lucky.

Either way, hope it gets better for you guys and that it doesn't frighten you off from trying another TTG game in the future.

They need to be more vocal about delays and such, I agree. I do like the episodes being released every month or so. It teaches you patience and how to wait. TWD is my first game from TellTale, and I'm okay with the delays, but do find it rather irritating not being told it'd be delayed
  • edited July 2012
It's not even the delays that are really bugging me, it's the complete ignorance they have for their buyers. Surely it benefits them to say 'Whoops, sorry, we've fucked up here and will try our best to sort it' than just hide behind silence? You can understand the delays a little what with E3 and all but c'mon guys!! You've lost all your dignity.

I'm glad to see similar comments from oldtime fans of TellTale. I myself am hoping that I don't end up turned off from the company once The Walking Dead has been released in full. From what I've heard they are successful in their own right, and any incidents during the continued release of future episodes won't change that.

    EDIT: I hope...

When it comes to game developers, they'd have to try really hard (in my opinion) to top DICE. They really go all-out to fix/adjust what people don't like in their Battlefield games. TTG have a solid core experience here, but I've come across quite a few bugs (nothing game-breaking yet - just reloading the checkpoint has fixed everything I've come across) and the delay for Ep 2 has got a lot of people all riled up.

Although, much like the show, I caught myself wondering why I was so engrossed in what amounts to people talking to each other, I find the game(s) enjoyable. One ongoing issue I've found (360) is that when there's any sort of screen transition, everything freezes up for a couple of seconds. Glitches aside, I think that this is a solid game. I'm considering getting Back To The Future now - probably less bugs since it has been out for awhile, and no waiting for it to be released.

I've seen that issue in pretty much every TTG game I've played (though I play them on my gaming PC).

I'm almost certain that it's because of their engine.

BTTF is one of their weaker releases, and was fairly divisive. Some liked it, some hated it.

Yeah, unfortunately they have always suffered from delays for as long as I have followed them. I have always preferred delays to buggy products though being made to wait while in the middle of a game can be quite frustrating though it also usually means that they can alter things that are clearly not working in earlier episodes (they even went and changed a character's voice, LeChuck, when they managed to get the actor from the older games to voice him part way through I believe).

Not sure how long the delay for episode 2 was since I only recently got round to trying it out, but the delays have usually been in the region of a couple of days to maybe a week if I am remembering correctly (which I might not be, not been around for a while tbh) so if it has been longer than that this time then either it was a one off hopefully or they have been getting worse while I've been away...

Yeah, I enjoyed it but it wasn't their best work imho. Still, it's decent and doesn't require knowledge on the storyline allowing you to jump right into it. Not played Sam and Max season 1 for quite some time so not sure how well it's been holding up.

I thought the story was handled well in BTTF, but it was far too easy for my tastes.

Sam and Max season 1 was also really easy, as far as adventure games go. They definitely made up for that with season 2, though.

People are silly getting angry about an episodic release schedule. If they are not happy with it, then they should just purchase the games which are already finished. Or they should wait until all the episodes are finished and released, then buy them all at once.

As for the type of game, I would like to see something more like the original "Quest For Glory: So you want to be a Hero?" Game from Sierra. A bit more complexity basically than the current telltale releases. But still firmly in the adventure game genre.

its fine, i just wish they had more communication with their costumers in forums, i wouldn't mind a 3-4 month if i was told what is going on in the studio lol.
  • edited July 2012
I have mixed feelings. I love the game in its entirety, and I hope that Lee and Clem survive in the end. The things that make Telltale so unreliable are late release dates, and very glitchy gameplay(they deleted my save files...). The game is amazing...when it works.

That's a bit harsh. I doubt the game would be of the caliber that it is if Telltale didn't invest itself in producing such a good game. The lack of communication is frustrating, but we don't know why there's been no communication. They don't own the Walking Dead IP, they just have the rights to produce Walking Dead IP. As such they may not even control the situation.

If they do, however, this really isn't justifiable. While I encourage them to draw out releases in order to ensure that the games are worthwhile, they are not Valve and really can't get away with this. As such while this hasn't colored my opinion of Telltale, I would be upset if the delays became a trend. I won't lie, however. I would be willing to suffer through another delay, so long as this didn't become a trend.

Telltale is releasing an above-par adventure game that's tailored to choice and fan-feedback. That's not an easy task, so I choose to give them some lee-way in regards to the delays. (Not the EU release, but I think it's Sony holding things up.)

I however, am not happy with most of the communication they have with us about these things. So far, every announcement they've made has caused the forum to flare up with upset and confused posts. It could all be avoided with a little more honesty and information. We did trust them with our money before the games is made, after all.

Also, if the xbox version gets released 2 days first again, I'm gonna be pissed having to sift through spoilers on the internet for the whole time just because tell tale wants a little more money.

My current opinion of Telltale Games ranks them thus:
Less irritating than censorship but more irritating than Ronaldo, the Walking Dead IMDB discussion board and mosquitos combined.

To summarise my opinion: Ronaldo+Mosquitos+TWD IMDB Forum>TTG>censorship

Walking Dead is the best Telltale game so far. The value for a $4-5 game is absolutely brilliant. The writing and voicework is still their strength. Communication with fans could be better.
  • edited July 2012
I'm not angry or anything. Considering the quality of the voice acting and the story and the product in general, I think it's mighty fine of them to sell it to us for $5 per episode.

The delay didn't really bother me that much, but I would like to see more communication from Telltale. That said, I love The Walking Dead: The Game think Telltale have done a great job.

I love the game, find the project interesting, but I'm disappointed with the way it's being handled. As mentioned, the gap between the first 2 seems a bit excessive. Following that pattern, we could see the New Year before the end of the series. Also, the bugs are a pretty bad. I just wiped the game completely off of my computer, started a new save, played both episodes, but I still have problems. Oddly enough, the game recognizes a few of my decisions, but the ones that really "matter," aren't logged when I continue my game.

If they had held it back a bit so a new episode could come out every month (preferably ever two weeks), that would have been better. Also, it's almost been a week without a patch to fix the corrupted save files. That's a little rough too.

I forgot, I think they should be more vocal on the progress that they've made in completing a current episode. Give people something to look forward to, you know? Back when we only had episode 1, there were loads of rumors of when the game was coming out. I feel like they should have a bulletin that gets updated, allowing us to know when the next episode might be coming out.

The thing about Telltale, is you can't deny that they create excellent games. Really, I have almost every one in one form or another, and I've loved every one of them.

While I'm a bit surprised and a lot disappointed about the lack of communication during this last delay, I know there was some reason for it. Perhaps it was legal or something (that's got me really frustrated over at mystmovie.com)

But I still love Telltale. They consistently put out great games that are usually delivered on time (with the occasional delay). I am constantly amazed at what they are able to do in such a short time with so few resources. Reminds me of Cyan of old.

    2 Things:

    1) The facial expressions sometimes seem to be a bit off, hope it's just a bug.
    2) The game performance. Graphics are OK, I like the style, but the sceneries are rather small and are driving my 7970 to a point, where I can actually hear it.

Otherwise? Meh, fine, as long as they release my heroine on a regular basis.

I first put my trust in Telltale with the Jurrasic Parc game. Which sucked imo. Game was so full of flaws and was just unplayable on PC. I was thinking about putting my trust (and money) in them again for TWD but after what I've read on forums and in reviews, I won't. Same problems for PC as with JP. So no thank you. I won't give my money to a Console developer who don't seem to properly test their product for all platforms. Too bad, because the ideas are very good and appealing, put the actual products just don't cut it. They've dug a very big hole for themselves and seem content at staying there for now.

My opinion on TTG they listen to the fans. They've made us like Kenny then they made us despise him. They've created a legion of loyal Clementine fans and then made it so doing what she wants {i.e. not stealing from the car] may conflict with doing what she needs [i.e. giving her a warm hoodie so she doesnt get sick] now I consider TWDG a vision of things to come. If TTG isn't offended i'd like to say i see this game asd the wright brothers plane. Sure it's got some issues. but it could lead to a future of games where instead of the Walking Dead episode one through five you could have lee split and one full episode being about Lee and Clementine in woodbury if you chose lily or Lee and clementine on [or getting to] kennys boat if you chose him or a full episode scouting out an place to make your own camp instead of making them possible endings. right now the technology makes it so TTG has to be fairly linear to prevent us from ending up with six gig episodes [assuming its the same size on all systems] but this could be the start of something truely amazing. and who knows whats next in store in episode maybe the reason doug keeps to himself is revealed that he's ashamed he's gay. or maybe carleys revealed to be a fed or a convict? you dont know and your left guessing and Hell half the forum thinks Lilys going to woodbury in episode but maybe she's not maybe she wont got till or 5 or at all if it's in it's own universe. You dont know and not many other series have that appeal. Example Eureka im one hundred percent positive that whats caused felicia day to go nuts is Senator Wen. no surprise there unless im wrong
  • The only reason why I bought The Walking Dead Game is that.... I'm fucking addicted to Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead Series ( Both The Comic-, Tv- And now game-series )
I thought this would be a good way to pass time until the 100th issue of comics and for the 3rd season of tv-series.....
