I bought it off steam in Australia. If you insist on getting it from d2d outside of US and Canada then you should look at a proxy. However few free proxies will be able to handle a 2gb dl so you might need to shell out for one.

Well I just paid for the game on Steam. Hope someone releases a mod that changes Guybrush's sprite, if such a thing is possible. Not a huge fan of the new portraits either, but what can you do? Wasn't enough to disuade me from buying though (obviously).

What do you mean your router is not compatible with the Steam Servers? That makes no sense... Before you give up hope, go into your router settings and try opening the ports Steam uses.

    http://portforward.com/
Go here, and select your modem/router model for instructions on how to do that.

    Steam Client:
    TCP/UDP
    Port Start: 27020
    Port End: 27050
    Port Map: 27020

    Steam Server:
    TCP
    Port Start: 27015
    Port End: 27015
    Port Map: 27015

Will it run without steam - ie brought and installed through steam but double clicking on the starting exe runs the game?
  • edited July 2009
Anyone tried downloading from D2d from outside North America? I'm assuming it won't work. We'll be in the US next week, so may try to buy it then - I'm not too keen on Steam.

I know how Steam works, but... how does D2d works?
  • edited July 2009
Well, Steam seems to run fine in my case but the game gives me the f**ck off "Monkey Island 1 has to be shut down" - error message with the option to report this to Microsoft.

Hardware drivers & DirectX are fine. Am I alone with that problem?

I believe that if you navigate your way into the folder Steam installs it to (by deafult: C:/Program Files/Steam/Steam Apps/Common/*game name*) you can run the game with the .exe file found inside without the need to have the Steam Client running. Make a shortcut to it and place it on the desktop for ease of access.

Don't know what you guys have against the Steam Client though. I love it so much that I have all my games added to my games list in Steam and launch them all from there.

Even if you uninstall Steam after installing SMISE?

Backup the folder first as uninstalling Steam will uninstall all the games too, but yes it should still work. If the game is not in the common folder but rather inside the folder that shares a name with your Steam user id then it requires Steam to launch.

However, I would advise you to test to see if the game will launch without Steam running before uninstalling Steam.

I used to have a similar problem when downloading podcasts in iTunes. I was using a wireless connection, so disabled that and used an ethernet cable. After a couple of weeks the wireless worked again.

I'm guessing my router reset itself at somepoint...so you may wanna try that

Downloaded the demo this moring on XBLA and its really good (obviously) except that the demo stops once you enter the kitchen in the SCUMM Bar, but anyway, tried to add some microsoft points via the internet but the only credit cards it accepts are Visa and Mastercard, and I have neither! I dont trust my computer enough to download MI for it. Have to (have to!!) find a way to download this
  • edited July 2009

I'd sign that, me and my 56k connection would totally sign that.

I thought this was a bit bizarre for the trial.. It doesn't exactly give you a lot of the game to try, and it's hardly the most exciting part. All you get is going into the Scumm bar and leaving.. I could see a lot of people not being impressed by that section alone.

It still needs Steam to run.

I think Steam is great for multiplayer games, having access to friend lists and such, but for single player games, I don't see the point. Having to log in every time, and the extra time it takes for steam to start, it's just one big detour for launching your game.

I know! I mean, it does give you some of the taste of the humour like "Re-elect Governor Marley, when theres only one candidate, theres only one choice!" But it doesnt give new players a chance to meet some of the other more important characters.

I've got Steam set to launch at startup. There's no reason I can think of to ever close it.

    Anyway, how Direct2Drive works?

Is Steam the only way to get the game for PC? I'd rather not make an account there but if it's the only way to get the game I will.

You download a file from them, then, probably during install you enter a key, just like with the older EA games, and it installs. At least that is the way Spore worked...

It's the only way, if you don't have an Xbox 360, to get it if you are not in the USA or Canada...
    At the moment anyway...

Hmm... I have to say that the people who made this game have done it a disservice. The art is horrible inconsistant. I find myself wishing I could play it with the original sprites, but with the remastered sound and voice acting/

A couple of the voices were not as I had imagined them...but everyone would have imagined them differently...

Also is it just me or is the "original" music just the special edition music turned down a bit...
  • edited July 2009
I don't really mind the art, but having to pick the verbs by pressing buttons at the keyboard or using the mouse wheel is pretty bad. It just makes everything take so much longer than it should.

I find the art style to be very good and certainly an improvement over what you get when you press F10. (Yes, I did play the original on it's release back in the day so I'm no graphics whore).

I think you actually CAN'T. Music and voice over dissappear when you change to the old graphics.

Steam is Valve's primary source of income, and considering there are over 20 million Steam accounts and 800,000+ MINIMUM concurrently active at any given time of the day, I can't see it going away any time soon.

Well I am a graphics whore, and studying design, so that's probably why I take issue with the way the game looks and you don't. If you want a perfect example of the kind of thing I don't like about the game, go into the Scumm bar and take a look at the guy hanging from the ceiling and the way he animates, or go into the back room and look at the three Pirate Leaders' feet.

In general the backgrounds seem to be pretty well done though.
