What is this MI: SE I keep hearing about? I'M never going to play it.

Cool, I´ve just noticed the name of the live musicians in the SE credits. The violin is played by none less then Peter McConnell (composer of the Grim Fandango soundtrack, co-composer of Monkey 2&4, DOTT, Sam and Max Hit the road and many others...)

Well, Steam seems to run fine in my case but the game gives me the f**ck off "Monkey Island 1 has to be shut down" - error message with the option to report this to Microsoft.
Hardware drivers & DirectX are fine. Am I alone with that problem?
Mermaid, I've got exactly the same problem, there's another person on Mojo forums experiencing it too but other than that we seem to be in the minority.
Let me take this opportunity to say I HATE STEAM! I have downloaded and played other games on steam without a hitch but it's often when you have a problem that you find out the true integrity of a system and it's user support - piss poor in steams case. Why?:
i. go to help and technical support and you're faced with lists of 'common' problems, none of which have anything to do with a game 'encountering a problem and needs to close'.
ii. ok so there must be a contact email so I can send them info and get a solution to this.... erm no there isn't (or if there is one it's bloody well hidden). I did click on a 'contact us' tab somewhere and it took me straight to the useless tech support page I'd been on before, lying b******!
iii. Ok keep calm, I'll go on the forums and put up a post in bright shiny neon flashing font pleading for some help. Got to register, ok, click on activation link in email, done.... IT STILL WON'T f***ING LET ME POST!!!!
And that is why I am here on the lovely Telltale forums having a rant.
I would like to point out that I have deleated and re-installed the game a few times, logged off and back onto steam too but nothing seems to work. Even tried freeing up some more space on my hd, no dice .

Yeesh, didn't I already say I was going to quit? If not, then "Yeesh, I quit!"
I thought the voice acting in the remake wasn't as good as I was expecting (considering every other monkey island, even 4 nailed the voice acting outta the park) but over all it was great to revisit a classic.
I'm about four hours into this, and I love it. I thought TOMI was so great, well I still do, but I should have played this first. I understand soo much more already. When I get done with this I'm playing TOMI again. I totally get why so many of you guys revere this game. This is just pure fun. Really funny. I love insult sword fighting! The scenes in the Govenor's mansion are comedy genius.
2GB is pretty regular for games nowadays. Even on Steam. Left4Dead and the Half-Life games are up there around that size. I expected it to be as much with the HD graphics.
this is a 20 year old adventure game and its only 532.51 MB on the 360, you expected it to be 2 GB,? well you got it for 2 GB i got it for 532 MB

I'm having the same problem-- I get the error & close message, no reason why-- and my HD meets all the specs. I did get through to the "customer service" at Steam. You may be interested to know that they told me it's Lucasarts' problem and I should contact them.
I had to fight my way through LA's FAQ list and essentially lie about my problem, because SMI:SE wasn't included on their list of game platforms you could ask questions about ("Yoda's Help Desk"). There're almost nothing but Star Wars games on that list anyway. I also sent them a more detailed email explaining my problem. I got back a form email in acknowledgment, telling me they'll get around to answering my question soon. That was hours ago and no reply is forthcoming yet...
So there's a big incentive for me never to buy another game through Steam. TMI, by the way, bought directly from Telltale, loaded and played like a charm. Immediately. At this point I'd gladly take my money back and see if I can't buy SMI:SE from anyone else.
I just start playing it. The game itself is of course great, but must say I'm not that much into new graphics. Don't like characters at all and backgrounds.. they look fancy, but lack interesting style and screams a bit too loud: "Computer coloring!"
Too bad we can't play the original version with new voices..

I've got the same damned problem, but I couldn't figure out how to contact the help desk. I've asked around on the forums. A few people have the same problem, it's not just us. Some have fixed it, some try the same things as them and it doesn't work. It makes no sense.
I'm really hoping I don't have to download it AGAIN. My download cap's 2gb, I've used 3 already. My isp just slows down a lot when I go over. I don't fancy leaving my computer to download for 7 hours again. For what? Nothing but an error.

Newsflash: SoMI:SE WAS, contrary to popular belief, made by LucasArts and not Valve.
Who else but the guys who made the game would be able to help you if the game crashes on startup? Definitely NO ONE at Valve, unless the game wouldn't download or install.
(No, I'm not a big fan of Steam either and just use it when they've got deals... but knowing where to get proper technical support is one of the basics you as a customer should have...)
The Lucasarts site ( www.monkeyislandspecialedition.com ) seems to have very little new info about where to buy it. So there's XBLA and Steam, and I've even seen a link to "Direct2Drive" which is for US and Canada only.
So... If I can't get it from any of those methods (not in the US, don't have an Xbox, don't have nor want Steam), is it at all possible to buy the game?
Why don't they have a simple purchase/download service like Telltale? Has anyone heard any plans for that?

For all I knew the problem was something to do with Steam, after their interminable setup procedure. And to be made to wait two days to be told it ain't their problem is not my idea of customer service. If this is how they back up what they sell, I'm not buying from them again.

And still no word from Lucasarts.
What you did is essentially the same thing as buying a game from Fry's Electronics, and then asking the girl at the customer service desk at Fry's how to get your copy of Baldur's Gate II to load up correctly.
If you were able to download the game, and then able to install it, then that means Steam is working. Obviously hundreds of thousands of people, including myself, managed to also download it and install it, and then even play it as well. The root problem for you seems to be a software issue in the game, possibly something to do with OS drivers. If you don't ever again wanna buy a game from Steam, that's fine, but it's just sounds willfully ignorant to blame them as part of the problem. Besides, if you call them and make a big enough fuss about it, they'll probably refund you the money.
It is bloody annoying that it crashes on start up for me. Found out its due to my CPU being too old, damn my Athlon XP, that can handle sims 3 and tomi but not somi:se. I feel sorry for people who have no other way of playing it (my brother also purchased it but on his xbox).

I am ignorant. I'm a 57-year-old woman with no clue. I don't game other than the Monkey Island series and Grim Fandango. My first instinct probably would be to ask the counter help at Fry's about what I'd do if something I'd bought at their store wasn't working right. And it's clear I'm not going to get any helpful advice here, either.
I dunno, I thought my advice to get your money back was pretty good. That's what you wanted, isn't it? Just call Steam by phone and make a big stink about it.
Ack I posted this in the Steam forums, but I thought I'd try here too to get some help.

Oh.. this may seem like an odd question, but the sword fighting part of the game. Is that fully voiced as well :P
have you clicked on "view technical information blablaba...."? does it point ot a specific file in the error report??

The problem is that this could really be anything. It could be Steam, it could be LA's error. Steam does a lot of stuff when you just run the game, like changing the program while it's loading (that's how their copy protection works), looking for the window of the game, drawing the nice little message and other user interface elements onto it and so on and so forth. So it could be their error. Or it could be a problem with LucasArts code, or Microsoft's tools, or your graphics drivers.
You see the problem here, there are a lot of variables and everybody is going to interpret it as not being their problem.
Maybe we can help a bit, but we're going to need more info before we can even make an educated guess. The easiest way for you to do that would be creating a dxdiag log. Go to "Start", then "Run" and enter "dxdiag" (without quotes). Press OK. A window asking you whether you want to check signatures may pop up, press "Cancel" if it does.
In the next window, there's a button "Save all information". Push it and specify a filename. Then open it in Explorer (it should open with notepad). You may want to edit out your computer name if that's your real name.
Then attach it to a post here.
We can't guarantee anything, but this way we'll at least have a chance to see where the problem is.
I downloaded SMI:SE on STEAM, but when I try to play the game it says "Game not available at the moment"?? Does anyone know what the hell I can do or what this means ?
Steam Says: Game Not Available at the Moment, Try again Later
Quote:
Most common solution:
1. Log out of Steam.
2. Delete the ClientRegistry.blob file here:
c:\Valve\Steam\Clientregistry.blob
or here:
c:\program files\Steam\Clientregistry.blob
(or wherever you installed Steam to)
3. then reboot and log back into Steam.

Oh wow THANK YOU!
I even contacted Lucasarts tech support and they replied more-or-less with "go away, we don't support Windows 7".
Seems I should have turned here for better tech support in the first place
