I'm envious too. I wish I could go back and play it for the first time again The same goes for all my adventure games - selective amnesia sounds good to me. "No, I haven't heard of Monkey Island before - is it good?"
Don't know... I've heard terrible things about one of them... Isn't that the adventure game about the flooring inspector...? Sounds kinda lame... What was his name... Duffwood Brushmead?
How many games do you own that are 20 years old that you can even put into your PC? I don't know anyone who still has even a 3.5" floppy drive on their current PCs, much less a monster 5.25" drive. How do you play your games that are 20 years old right now? Digging out your ancient PC or downloading them on the internet? I highly doubt that in 20 years, any game you buy on Steam won't be readily available on the internet.
I burned the files on my 3.5" Monkey Island floppys on a CD 8 years ago along with Monkey Island 2, Indiana Jones Zak McCracken and some of the other games
It is weird that a game that used to be on 5 floppys is now 2.5 gigs just for a little nicer pictures and some sound.

I know it's most likely in the fine print of most games that are purchased nowadays but it's still scary when you think about it.
Basically they say if the game is not running it's your problem and if they want they can decide to just take it away at any time for no reason and your out of luck.
What happened to the good old days where when you paid for a product it actually was yours? This sounds more like temporary renting a game.

Yeah, I think Lucasarts is playing a little game there... cheap price, HUGE download.
The Steam terms of service have similar language...this is pretty much your standard legal ass-covering for video games, digitally distributed or otherwise.
What happened to the good old days where when you paid for a product it actually was yours? This sounds more like temporary renting a game.
Never happened. You always owned a license, though when it's tied to a physical copy you were able to transfer it without issue.
Yeah, I think Lucasarts is playing a little game there... cheap price, HUGE download.
...I see no way as to why this is a negative aspect for the consumer. It's a huge download because it has a lot of improvements. It may be negative for you but the actual product itself is sound.
Downloaded it early this morning. While I don't really like the artistic style of the updated version*, the music and voice work are incredible. Also, it is just downright amazing to click that "time warp" button and seamlessly shuffle back and forth between the remake and the 1991 VGA version. Whichever developer on the staff came up with that idea needs to get a promotion and a cupcake, stat.
I'm playing the XBLA version, and I've got to say that, while the controls are generally good, it can sometimes be hard to get something done in a hurry with a 360 gamepad. The seagull puzzle was annoying to pull off with the command switching and the timer working against me. But it's totally worth it to see a big screen TV entirely full of hi-def Monkey Island.
*Sometimes it looks like the art crew missed visual jokes that were there in the original game. If you go to Stan's Shipyard in the original game, you'll see that the monkey-ship is sinking at the end of the pier-- the aft end is clearly going under the water. I assume the joke is supposed to be that you're about to buy a terribad ship that's already half-sunk. In the hi-def game, however, the ship looks to be floating rather soundly. The aft end isn't sinking; they just made the ship shorter.
I GOT IT RUNNING! horah! It involved messing about with directX in the end and a nice reboot after reinstalling. YAY!
I dunno, the interface feels familiar to me. I've used the keyboard letters thing before now on something and I can't remember what lol. Pressing I to load up inventory isn't too annoying atm so yeah... Switching between modes IS SO MUCH FUN hahaha.
I actually played through the cd version of secret (the same version they've built this new edition over in fact) about 2 or 3 weeks ago so it's interesting for me to play through it in high def with sound when the original is still so fresh in my memory heheh.
Not keen on a lot of the art direction, not the characters at least. Guybrush looks like a zombie and Estevan looks like someone put his head in a blender hahaha. What the hell is up with that?
I LOVE the new docks though, oh man.. it's SO PRETTY.
Guybrush looks fine!
I mean look at him.. It's no Han Solo or James Bond, but that's simply the point!
He looks like a geek who wants to save the day; And that's who Guybrush were in SoMI.
His character has thankfully evolved since then, but I think that they preserved that geekyness that made him so likable to begin with.
Ack I posted this in the Steam forums, but I thought I'd try here too to get some help.
I've just finished downloading Secret of Monkey Island (6 damn hours, and my download cap's long since been broken). This is my second game I've bought online, I much prefer retail copies. This is my first with Steam.
I get this error everytime I try to launch the game via Steam AND by going into the common directory and running it directly. http://i31.tinypic.com/23t5qv4.jp
I read the topic in the Secret forum where people were having the same problem, mainly in Windows 7 and Vista. I'm on XP S2. I've reinstalled DirectX 9.0 from another game I have. Still getting the same thing. Please, I don't know how to fix this.
Just in case, comp specs (yeh I know, it's quite old in places ^_^)
AMD Athlon XP 2200+ 1.6Ghz
2GB ram
Windows XP (Professional) Service pack 2
NVIDIA Geforce FX 5500, 256mb
DirectX 9.0
Sound card compatible with ^^
I know it's not the most top range computer, but it runs Tales of Monkey Island, and other quite recent games. As I haven't a clue what the problem is, I thought it'd be best to list everything.
Responses have been somebody pointing out that my processor doesn't meet the requirements. Um yeah, I know that but my computer can play a lot more advanced games than this. I doubt I'd get an error message like the way I did if that was my only prob, it'd probably just run but lag a lot or something if that was the case.
The other reply was
First thing I would try, right click on game, select properties, click verify game files. You may want to restart Steam and your computer too.
If that doesnt work,go into the System folder and delete client registry blob.Restart Steam
Any other suggestions?
I'm stuck at work for the time being, it'd be very useful if I had a few more to work with when I got back.
Download took 6 (nearly 7)... damn... hours... *facepalm* I may end up rambling away in that doesn't have to be this compressed topic for this. My isp sucks with it's 2gb download cap, it seriously slowed down my download 3/4 the way through.
Oh.. this may seem like an odd question, but the sword fighting part of the game. Is that fully voiced as well :P
Its nor really a bug. I remember somewhere i read that happens because it was difficult to record all the numbers... so they record the most important and the others they use x number pieces of eight
No... I'm refering to the fact that Guybrush sais "I have 371 pieces of eight" when he actually has 173. Must be a bug.

I dont know much about steam, but know that there are often updates for games, would steam be the best to download from, if i want to be updated with bug fixes for SOMI:SE. BTW does anyone think they will have updates for bug fixes or not bother.
No... I'm refering to the fact that Guybrush sais "I have 371 pieces of eight" when he actually has 173. Must be a bug.
Probably they linked the wrong sound file or Dominic Armato has read the wrong number. It's excusable, since he had to read ALL possible "pieces of eight"-combinations... with different prices for the map, breath mint, sword and shovel (and the 2 coins you get for taking the flier) there are a lot of combinations, especially since you can buy them in in no particular order.
I'm really disappointed because a major bug is stopping me from enjoying the game. The mouse cursor is all messed up, if I drag it to edges of the screen the windows cursor appears over the game cursor and I can't click on that location. This is extremely annoying with the curtain in the scumm bar as at first I wasn't sure why Guybrush wouldn't move when I clicked on it, I had to pull the mouse back slightly. Also in the menus and dialog options the cursor is out of sync with what's highlighted. I have to select the bottom of the dialog option to get it to work as selecting the top part actually selects the option above. Also as I'm playing in a 4:3 resolution there are black bars at the top and bottom of the screen and the game cursor doesn't move into the black regions even though my mouse obviously does so it gets very confusing when trying to walk about. This is all very annoying and I’m a bit upset about it. I’ve decided to stop playing the game and wait to see if they fix it.

True... but I'm thinking that other people who are new to the series might not be so understanding.
On meathook's island (actually, before you use the rubber chicken on the string), Guybrush can simply walk all over the lit sign. If you switch to the original, the sign is smaller, thus his walk-area is established ok. Try it, you'll see what I'm talking about.
As far as gamers are nowadays, they complain about everything, and small things like that can affect the game's sales.
Maybe I'm exagerating, but how many people can truly appreciate the work and the quality of the series if they're used to Crysis, Call of Duty and other high-graphic-games-with-bad-or-no-story-at-all.
(I'm not attacking these games...it's just an example)
Just wondering, when my game starts it opens in a window but a full window, the first time it opened it was full screen, but the second time i opened it, it was in a full window by full window i mean it is not full screen but the window takes up the screen, i can still see the x in the top right corner, but cant get it in full screen. any sugestions?
I was getting very frustrated. I wanted this special edition to be fancy enough that when I showed my friends Monkey Island, they wouldn't be turned off by pixels, and I was worried they were going to be turned off by a buggy interface.
Well i'm up to chapter 3 now. Heheh. Enjoying it so far, switching between old and new is a great bit of fun.
Anyway, i'm still having a problem with steam loading the game, I have to reboot every time I want to start the game again, if I play for a bit, close the game down and do something else then try to load it up again, it'll play 2 seconds then cut straight to the menu screen... repeatedly. Very odd.
Why is it taking people so long to download? It too about 10 or 15 minutes here and we hardly have the most top of the range connection. That said, I did download it at about 11:30pm gmt so maybe the servers were quieter at that time?
Not having an issue with the interface actually, ok so you have to sorta... not quite click ON the line of dialogue you want but more just above or below it... but it's not too much to tollerate. Question though, HOW THE HELL do I combine inventory items? I keep having to switch to old version mode to do any of the inventory puzzles lol.

click USE with the first item, then bring up the inventory again and click on the 2nd item. It should say USE 'item' with 'item'.
I got it on XBLA and its been really easy to navigate and use. Switching from new to old is fun to see too.
kind of annoyed with myself as I had just started playing MI on the 360 and decided I'd see what the hint system was like so I pressed X once. Then I found out there's an achievement for finishing the game without using the hint system. At least this gives me another reason to play this again. As if I needed a reason
throwing out the question here, sorry if i missed it in the text but do you get a DVD sent to you along with the download of the game? Simmilar to how telltale are doing it that is.
I tried that but it didn't seem to work, it just clicked me out of the inventory drawer. Do you actually have to click OUT of inventory then open it again? For the grog thing that's time you really don't want to waste.
Anyway, finished the game now eee. Though i'm sad there weren't stupid credits. The old credits were entertaining.

auto detects my desktop res of 1360x768 and set itself to that without me doing anything. perfect!

Buy external hard drive/DVD burner.
Save MI:SE onto said hard drive or DVD.
Activate it online.
Keep manual unlock code.
There you go.

Works without problem for me on a laptop with 2 2.0 Ghz...

The VGA version takes 4.33MB of disk space. So the SE is larger by a factor about 457. :O)

Have you tried the solution I posted HERE?
Have the exact same issue
didnt enjoy it that much
did anyone else have the issue of your left click not being read when choosing a dialogue option
Me too.
Yeap. I have to click down the line, not really on it.
True... but I'm thinking that other people who are new to the series might not be so understanding.

Same issue here, but it disappears when I Alt+Tab twice.
this will help with the mouse cursor and clicking on dialogue choices problems.

I'm running it on my TV at 1920x1080
Thank you. Wonder why they didn't test with compositing enabled.
BTW, I'm running a 1440x900 on my laptop.
Yes I reverted to hitting enter or playing with the gamepad, in both cases the dialog is selected properly.
THANK YOU!
I was getting very frustrated. I wanted this special edition to be fancy enough that when I showed my friends Monkey Island, they wouldn't be turned off by pixels, and I was worried they were going to be turned off by a buggy interface.
This is a great fix. THANK YOU!
Yes to both of them. The side-click wasn't the end of the world, though, and I prefer to use the enter thing.
The pg-up/pg-down thing not doing dialogue took some getting used to though
Anyway, i'm still having a problem with steam loading the game, I have to reboot every time I want to start the game again, if I play for a bit, close the game down and do something else then try to load it up again, it'll play 2 seconds then cut straight to the menu screen... repeatedly. Very odd.
