Agreed. Especially on 4:3 and 16:10 displays the area of the black bars could have been used sooooo much better
    *SNIP: 3 Example Images*

You do realize that the black bars you're referring to are not an actual part of the game, thus unusable? If they were to use those black bars, then people using a 1680x1050 resolution (16:9) would have a distorted view, just like the ones on 4:3 or 16:10 would have without black bars.

I agree on the actual interface remarks though. I cannot seem to fathom why they added in the inventory overlay, instead of having a static portion dedicated to it. Perhaps it would have helped if it was placed the same ways as Telltale solved the problem in ToMI.

And last but not least, about the actual actions:
The verb coin in CoMI worked perfectly well from an object -> action perspective, but obviously we're dealing with about 4x more actions in the case of SoMI. The click-n-hold might still have worked out though. I would love to see a design document on design decisions made by Lucas Arts, that would be enlightening (or perhaps disgruntling)

I'm really disappointed because a major bug is stopping me from enjoying the game. The mouse cursor is all messed up, if I drag it to edges of the screen the windows cursor appears over the game cursor and I can't click on that location. This is extremely annoying with the curtain in the scumm bar as at first I wasn't sure why Guybrush wouldn't move when I clicked on it, I had to pull the mouse back slightly. Also in the menus and dialog options the cursor is out of sync with what's highlighted. I have to select the bottom of the dialog option to get it to work as selecting the top part actually selects the option above. Also as I'm playing in a 4:3 resolution there are black bars at the top and bottom of the screen and the game cursor doesn't move into the black regions even though my mouse obviously does so it gets very confusing when trying to walk about. This is all very annoying and I’m a bit upset about it. I’ve decided to stop playing the game and wait to see if they fix it.

i just finished monkey island: se and thourougly enjoyed it -

the few gripes i had was i encountered a bug where the monkey island map music would sometimes fail to play or the cannibals music when i was jumping locations quickly. i preffered the original sound track in the enhanced cd version of the original, and would have been nice to have the option to play original gfx with voices or original music with voices and new graphics or whatever combo you want. also i found hte inventory a bit clunky like it disapeared when you try and use an item with another inventory item so you have to use the inventory again. didnt find a way to scroll through verbs using my xbox controller so contiued to use mouse and keyboard to switch verbs quick as gre menu every time you want to use something was anoying. i also found the inventory arrows were slighly out of sync with the mouse and the mouse would stop working right at screen edge like poster above but it wasn't a major issue for me

sounds like allot of complaints but i liked the new graphics and the voices, overral good remake

Still playing it... listening to every line recorded... Enjoying it to the extreme!! It's superb! A few bugs though, especially with the "I have X pieces of eight" and I don't like Stan's pace... he should've talked faster, like "in your face". Other than that, great! And It's wonderful to see so many actors returning. Go Stan!! And everybody!!

They actually already use the black bar space to spell out your sentences.

So despite all my complaints, I ended up buying SMI:SE anyway...
  • edited July 2009
I know that you can get it through steam now, but on the lucasarts website it still says coming soon, anyone know if it will be availiable through lucasarts.

Also, just wondering, i have heard of a few minor bugs with the SE, if i buy through steam will the game possibly be updated with bug fixes through the standard updates. (i havnt used steam much)

    1680x1050 = 16:9? I demand a recount, it is 16:10 ;)

    1680 / 1050 = 1.6
    16 / 10 = 1.6

So it would also work with 1680x1050... since most of the PC displays are 4:3 or 16:10, only the small percentage of 16:9-displays would have problems with this solution. For them, the interface could scroll up, if the cursor is at the bottom of the screen or they would have (very small) black bars left & right.

In the adventure "The Abbey", there is a similar solution:

If you have a 4:3 display, the graphic uses the full screen... every time, you want to look in the inventory, you have to open it.

But if you have a widescreen display, you can choose between 2 options:
    - play in widescreen (all the graphics use the whole screen, inventory has to be opened like in the 4:3-version)
    - play it with the 4:3-aspect (the game graphics are on the left side and the additional space on the right side is used for the display of the inventory items... so you don't have to open the inventory, it is always open).

So only the widescreen users can use the comfortable option, but better only a part of the gamers than noboy.

Does anyone know what the deal is with the leaderboards for the XBOX Live Arcade version of TSMI:SE?

Last night I was #2 with almost 270,000 and then I started the game again, now I have around 220,000 so I guess it doesn't add each time you play. My guess is you have to do a high scoring playthrough seeing/picking up everything, but then won't everyone eventually have the same highest score?

It's confusing but meh, does the PC/Steam version have leaderboards?

Its nor really a bug. I remember somewhere i read that happens because it was difficult to record all the numbers... so they record the most important and the others they use x number pieces of eight

Where would you recommend I buy this at? Will it be available on LucasArts website?

Which is preferable? I'd guess Direct2Drive.
  • edited July 2009
Before i buy this id like to know how many bugs there are and what they are, are there many?
  • edited July 2009
Just finished downloading, and can't wait to play! It's been about 15 years since I've played the game, we'll see how much I remember... :)
  • edited July 2009

    hahahahahahahahahahaha
That made me laugh SO bad :p
  • edited July 2009
Will download it first thing tomorrow btw. yay :)
  • edited July 2009
Never mind. I went ahead and got it at Direct2Drive. Downloading now; I'm really excited. :D

I'll probably breeze through it as I played the game earlier this year; this should be really interesting. I think LA's pricing was perfect.

EDIT: I'm getting 370 kb/sec speed holy cow.

would steam be the best place to get the game if i want to get updates on bug fixes and other stuff, if the come out or are there other places that also include updates on their games?
  • edited July 2009
Since D2D also seems to be DRM-based (and with a limited number of activations, at that) I'm waiting for the official release on LucasArts' site.
  • edited July 2009
how come the x-box version's only about 600mb?

Do we think this might get released at retail, or at least on a disc? I want that nice artwork on my shelf!!
  • edited July 2009
Hmmmm I do want it on PC but my computer is at the minimum of P4 3 GHZ. Is there a demo for PC? I'll also have to wait if I purchase the PC version because I'm still waiting on my new checking account. I have MS points so I can get it right now on 360. I'll try the demo out to see how it plays on 360.

Compression. The PC version doesn't have compressed resources (like audio) and the 360 version does.

The PC version of SOMI:SE uses uncompressed art and audio, XBLA has it's own method of compression. - that's where the size difference is at
Bit rubbish that you can only adjust the resolution, it doesn't help one bit when the assets are huge.
  • edited July 2009
so is the xbox version not as good looking/sounding as the PC one?#

I'm a bit upset now, I've bought the xbox one :(

Still, might just get both :P
  • edited July 2009
Anyone else who bought it on both Xbox and PC?
  • edited July 2009
I can't compare but to me the 360 version looks great. The main difference I guess is that you can adjust the resolution on the PC version whereas the 360 one is fixed.
  • edited July 2009
Yep, I bought it on Xbox and PC. Bought it on Xbox last night, but for the sake of $10, I was always going to get it on PC. I mean, come on....it's Monkey Island. I've finished it so many times now, but it's still a classic.

I must say, I do like the newly orchestrated soundtrack, but there's still something about the old Amiga soundtrack IMO.

Now to not finish it too quickly so I've still got something to tide me over until TOMI Chapter 2 :P

Seriously, anyone think this kid is just trolling till someone offers to buy it for him? ;)

On the subject of the game I think Lucasarts have done a scary good job with it, I'm not ready to forgive them for sucking satan's cock for so long but if they keep up the quality and price point I might be forced to.

Sure some of the new sprites don't quite have the character but the voices are brilliant (though Stan is a bit laid back), the music is top notch too.

Anyone notice that they left a few old school chunky pixels here and there in the backdrops? Check out the trees in the forests. :)

Downloaded the demo this moring on XBLA and its really good (obviously) except that the demo stops once you enter the kitchen in the SCUMM Bar, but anyway, tried to add some microsoft points via the internet but the only credit cards it accepts are Visa and Mastercard, and I have neither! I dont trust my computer enough to download MI for it. Have to (have to!!) find a way to download this

Go to Wal-Mart or Gamestop and buy a 1600 point card for 20 bucks. I don't like to use credit cards, so that's what I do.
Everyone in the house is asleep. I'm about to crack open a Sam Adams light and start playing this on 360. So this is the game that started it all, huh? You guys have got me really excited to play this. I just found out this whole series existed a couple of weeks ago. You gotta admit, I have damn good timing.

I knew something was missing, I needed booze. Anyway enjoy one of the best games ever for the first time, I'm envious.

I'm envious too. I wish I could go back and play it for the first time again :( The same goes for all my adventure games - selective amnesia sounds good to me. "No, I haven't heard of Monkey Island before - is it good?"

Will it run on a laptop with 2 1.7 GHZ processors, or should I install it on the desktop with 2 2.5s?
