Steam is Valve's primary source of income, and considering there are over 20 million Steam accounts and 800,000+ MINIMUM concurrently active at any given time of the day, I can't see it going away any time soon.

    We´ll see in 20 years.

    WTF 2 GB!!!!!!!!!

Isnt that insane!?!? Im still not happy that i cant own the game physically! i also hate i had to register to Steam, and that im obliged to be subscripted, which i believe is an imposition.

I prefer the old school way and own the game. I hope in the future they do release it!

I was shocked about the dl size too.. I presumed it would be a lot smaller.. oh well only 2 hours 16 mins to wait.

Downloaded the demo this moring on XBLA and its really good (obviously) except that the demo stops once you enter the kitchen in the SCUMM Bar,

The X-Box version has a demo? Hmm...does anyone know if the PC version has a demo as well? I'm tempted to get this, but given the strangely-high system specs, I'd like to have a chance to try it first and make sure the blasted thing will run...

How many games do you own that are 20 years old that you can even put into your PC? I don't know anyone who still has even a 3.5" floppy drive on their current PCs, much less a monster 5.25" drive. How do you play your games that are 20 years old right now? Digging out your ancient PC or downloading them on the internet? I highly doubt that in 20 years, any game you buy on Steam won't be readily available on the internet.

I was very happy about the DL size and the speed - steam is as always fantastic. Took about 5 minutes to download, 4-5 mins to install.

Now to the game, surpising slickness coupled with some scenes where you are talking and you see a fairly non animated picture of who you are talking to. Sound is fantastic, presentation superb and for the price this is a steal. I can't remember any of the puzzles as I never really finished this one but so far, great job Lucasarts, very promising. Haven't worked out how to see inventory without hitting 'I' so far, but I just started.

    Thumbs up from me!

Old games don´t have disk protection systems. So I just keep them on HD and backed them up. And I still have a 3.5" floppy drive. Installed Eye of the Beholder from disk last week. I´ll admit that it´s only 19 years old though.

Probable getting OT. I´ll just end by saying I don´t want to depend on an internet connection when I want to play a game. That´s why I hate telltales activation system as well.

Download took me about 1 1/2 hours, installing a few minutes.
Hey, it runs! IT RUNS!!! :D:D:D How is that possible? I don't have a 3 GHz processor... Grog, anyone?
(Sorry, but... I am soooo happy!!!!)

    Now to something different.

Well, some of the old games were available as a re-release on CD a few years later (like Eye of the Beholder, Indy 3 and 4, Monkey Island 1 and 2...)

the kind of thing I don't like about the game, go into the Scumm bar and take a look at the guy hanging from the ceiling and the way he animates,

LucasArts already said they had to match the new models over the existing animations from SoMI, and thus couldn't add anymore. If they had they wouldn't have been able to let the game transition seamlessly between the two versions. It was a choice between smoother animations and seamless switch to the classic version, and I think they made the right choice seeing as the game is a re-release with tons of nostalgia factor.

That doesn't excuse the instances of poorly drawn sprites like the aforementioned Pirate Leaders' feet. It's also a totally b/s excuse. Transitioning from new to old would still look fine if the new animations had more frames. Regardless, the thing I was trying to point out about the guy hanging from the ceiling wasn't even about the number of frames though. He loses mass as he goes from one frame to another, making him look like a paper cutout. The original sprite and animation did not suffer from this problem.

downloading, 70%. I wonder why it's so big? Did they use .bmp files for the backgrounds? Or do they support resolutions up to 1200p? How big is the 360 Version?

Actually they support resolutions up to 1200p
I assume it is the voice acting and they have the images for every resolution supported in place to give the optimum quality. And I also assume they did not use jpeg for the images but PNGs the images look gorgeous and dont have any compression artefacts!

Well it seems Steam is the only option for UK PC people right now, I'm downloading now at 285kps however as soon as a cracked copy appears on the torrent sites I'll be getting it for safekeeping.

Steam amounts to renting games at full price in my eyes, worse still you get no physical object and if steam ever goes under you're left with nothing.

This is ok with me, but they forgot to mention that less frames means less production costs. One of the reasons why everyone switched to 3d was that 2d animation with lots of frames became too expensive.

I find the art style to be very good and certainly an improvement over what you get when you press F10. (Yes, I did play the original on it's release back in the day so I'm no graphics whore).

The problems with the old graphics is, they looked okish on the tiny low res monitors we had back then but if you sit in front of a 26 inch HD monitor they look really bad full screen, even the scalers in scummvm do not help anymore,

But if you read most terms & conditions for games nowadays, you don't actually own the game even if you do own a physical copy you are owning a licence for the game.

It sucks but...it's what happens when things get pirated and lawyers advise

Yep, though to be honest all it would take for me to accept the online distribution methods is a reduction in price and the option to pay a small fee for the physical object...like Telltale

Yep I agree 100% IMHO Telltale are one of the best developers/publishers of their time...closely followed by Good Old Games but they don't make their games...

Oh really it's a b/s excuse is it? I was unaware you knew more about designing the game and making it run optimality, then you know, the people designing it. It wouldn't be as smooth a transition between old and new if more frames were added. Currently, at any time, in the middle of any sequence you can transition. If more frames were added you'd only be able to transition at specific times, not in the middle of animation or dialogue. The new game is literally built ontop of the old.

If Steam ever does go under (let's face it with the amount of money it generates for Valve, the number of big name developers behind it, the increasing trend toward digital distribution, and the increased security the platform provides against piracy (the bad kind) it isn't going anywhere soon) I'm willing to bet my entire Steam collection that Valve will release some kind of activation utility that allows the games to be played without Steam. I'm also sure they would warn everyone well in advance to give them enough time to download all the games from their servers.

Failing all of that, you can still launch games from Steam in offline mode.

Actually, yes it does, as already stated, the reason the game does not have more animation is because of the transition between new and old feature, a feature added for people that don't like the new style. The actual drawn art though is beautiful, and looks so much better than the original art in MI ever did.

It should still work, if you have patience I'd just leave it, it's taking about two hours for me.

For Direct2Drive it asks/tries to get you to install their own download manager so you can pause and resume your download, but if you dont want to install it you can just click the download button

The download time for me on D2D was initially 4 hours until I used their download manager and it went down to about 1:20.

Well damn, it's downloaded but wont run. No, I have no idea what my system specs are but we can run Portal and suchforth.

It loads up but automatically goes to the load/options screen. I click "resume" it plays 5 seconds and goes back to the options screen. Anyone have any idea?

I don't really mind the art, but having to pick the verbs by pressing buttons at the keyboard or using the mouse wheel is pretty bad. It just makes everything take so much longer than it should.
Agreed. Especially on 4:3 and 16:10 displays the area of the black bars could have been used sooooo much better:

    LucasArts' interface:
    6itj-1v.jpg

my prefered interface: (no black bar at the top doubles the space at the bottom)
    6itj-1x.jpg

or both interfaces combined (to please mouse AND gamepad users):
