Since Steam has finally got the demo up for everyone now, I went ahead and downloaded it and had a play. From what I've now seen, I think the two gun limit isn't much of a problem as all the varieties of weapons (or most of them, I should say) were lying about ready for me to grab. The Ego thingy is fine too, but it takes a little getting used to. The thing that's got me most sad is the checkpoint saving. I've never liked checkpoint saving in any game. Other than that it seems to be a fun game and when it gets a little cheaper I will be buying.

The demo lies - weapons aren't so freely avaliable in the full game. They're strewn about the demo so you get a chance to see what they're like, but in the game proper they're extremely limited in the weapons they give you. It's generally whatever the enemies drop, with the occasional cache to keep you going.

And checkpoint saving is done in every single console game, which has pretty much been the case since the PS2 era. It may suck, but it's the most practical way of doing things. It'd probably involve rehawling the game to get it working on the PC, and it's not really needed.

It's definitely needed. I can't even show a friend the beginnings of the game without sacrificing my progress and starting over. They should at least have given us multiple game slots. I would have taken that.

Fair point, that is incredibly annoying. The only positive is that you get to keep your Ego boosts (I think), but that's hardly adequete compensation for having to go all the way back.

I don't think you can. I've played through the game a couple times now and the Ego bar doesn't look any bigger upon restarting the game.
  • edited June 2011
Oh. Well, f**k. That just sucks then.

Is it sad this is the nicest review I've seen for this game?
He actually sounded depressed about this.

Make a new profile. That's what I did to show my friends Eat Lead.
  • edited June 2011
A new profile? What are you talking about? That may work on consoles (and is honestly too much work to justify), but not so much for the PC without buying a second copy.
  • edited June 2011
Oh wasn't sure if you bought it console or PC. In that case just zip your old save file.
  • edited June 2011
Yeah, if you're lucky enough to find it. And again, this all shouldn't be necessary at all.
  • edited June 2011
I agree it shouldn't be. Is it still in the same spot it was in the demo?

It's not the length of it that's important (that's what she said), but rather... its density, if I'm putting it correctly (that's what he said).

Man, do you know what was good in the good ol' classic games? The ability to CHOOSE ANY LEVEL YOU WANT TO START FROM, once you beat the level you want to choose. It can be coded easily, just have one checkpoint save file for your most farthest point in the game, and one more to handle restarting the level after deaths while playing the earlier levels.

I'm just saying, if they had thought of nifty ideas like that, they could at least get away by the nostalgia factor.

Wait, do you mean good ol' Duke Nukem games, or good ol' games in general? Because, in general, that's not even old! Valve still does this in their games, and most games have a 'replay mission' option. I haven't played DNF yet, but are you saying that it can't do even that?!

Good ol' games in general, because some Duke games are just so ol' they didn't know of the luxury of level selection in vidya games.

I think my brother wants to be just like duke nukem when he grows up.

Some improvements are coming to DNF game in the form of a patch.
    http://forums.gearboxsoftware.com/showthread.php?p=2422571#post2422571
The development team has been hard at work combing through the feedback provided here and elsewhere, with updates based on this feedback currently in the works for all three platforms.

Among the changes coming to PC are a new expanded inventory option that allows you to carry up to four weapons in the single-player campaign, Valve Anti-Cheat System (VAC) support, push-to-talk voice chat, the ability to adjust FOV plus other fixes and improvements that are still being tested.

We’ll be sharing more details about the updates, including those coming to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, as they’re finalized. Thanks again for your support!

I hope one of the improvements is a multi-game save system. Even if it's still check-point based this game needs multiple game slots.

Too bad it was such a letdown. I guess we couldn't expect too much out of it though for all the hype.

    About. God-damn. Time.

Seriously, of all the problems I had with the game, the two-weapon thing was the big one. Getting rid of that makes me very happy I just got the Balls of Steel edition!

Some info on the new multiplayer DLC coming soon. It's full of a bunch of parodies of other games. Each new map comes with a special unique weapon. There are also new multiplayer modes. Some of the games it parodies are Call of Duty, Team Fortress 2 (with a map called 2Fort1Bridge), and others. The unique weapon for the TF2 parody map is a minigun which looks....fittingly unmistakably familiar. Also, First Access Club members who preordered the game get this DLC for free.

This is stupid. The game's practically broken by itself, patching just won't work. It's boring, unappealing, predictable, too formulaic and no popculture reference or increasement of the weapon inventory slots will save it from mediocrity.

Just make a new Duke Nukem game already with fresh ideas.

I'd rather play Team Fortress 2 than this awful piece of shit.

The patch for Duke Nukem Forever has finally been released. It features a bunch of changes and improvements, here's the list:

    Gearbox wrote:
    • 4-weapon inventory option for single player
    • MP Server favorites
    • Dedicated server overhaul
    • FOV can be modified
    • Change VOIP to push-to-talk (bandwidth fix)
    • VAC anti-cheat system enabled
    • Support for Japanese Steam ID’s for PC release in Japan
    • Auto-aim fix
    • Blood effects on surfaces behind enemies when shot
    • Steam.exe no longer uses an unusually high amount of CPU
    • Texture quality improvements
    • Fixes to prevent single player and multiplayer save data corruption
    • Leaderboard exploit fixed
    • AMD Dual-Core Optimizer no longer automatically installed (fixes rare bugs with Intel processors)
    • Crash/compatibility fixes and other minor bugs

Even though the dedicated servers now have a console window and are easier to start up, you still have no control. You can only view what's happening. Hopefully this will be improved upon as time goes on. And you still can't play on your own dedicated server because it's tied into Steam. There are no separate DS binaries.

    And still no mod tools.

Give them time. What we've got here is still better than what we had before, and I believe there'll be further updates along with the forthcoming DLC (well, there should be, anyway). Things are getting better, if slowly.

The fact they've given us this patch is a sign that they're listening to what people want, which is a little rare - plus, they've not charged us for it, which is even rarer. It's a good sign.

If they do release mod tools (and they'd be fools not to), I suspect it'll be after the DLC. Maybe after that Single-Player stuff they've got coming (that I'm oddly looking forward to). Not a shred of proof they'll do this, but it makes a kind of sense - let them actually finish the game before we start fixing it and all that.

I'm just afraid by the time they give it all out it'll be too late. DNF already has a reputation (the one SINCE its release not before) and it's already 2 months later and multiplayer server counts are dwindling.
  • edited August 2011
Hopefully it'll pick up once they patch the console versions. If not, then... well, there's always the next Duke Nukem game..?

On a unrelated matter, are there any achievements/trophies in Forever that can only be gotten in multiplayer?
  • edited August 2011
    Yes.
  • edited August 2011
    Yes.
Expletive! I hate when games do that.

    ...

OK, you just lied to me. All of the trophies are single-player only. Curse you for getting me all worried! Curse you!
  • edited August 2011
Oh, I was sure there was. My bad.
  • edited August 2011
It's OK. Most games do, so I can see why you thought Forever would as well.

    If anyone's interested.
