It's actually hard to know what to think of this one.
For
- He actually has fingers now
- The belt buckle is larger and more detailed
- There are more colours
- They turned his shirt into a cool vest and under-shirt
- He now has an earring
Against
- All of a sudden, his face looks middle eastern when he didn't before
- They have turned what looked more like a cool hat into a turban
- The green is now far too bright
- He looks like he has a carrot stuck up his butt and he was born with a spine defect
- His shoes are now a shade of orange, rather than the dark brown that they were before.
I mean, there are cool things about this version, but what the hell was wrong with the original? I would like to think that this wasn't the final, in-game model, but I fear that it will be because it's the same one that is used in one of the screenshots. It's not all that bad, and there are quite a few things that I quite like about it, but couldn't LucasArts have at least left the shape, posture and face alone, and then added in the cool extra things such as the under-shirt, the earring and the belt buckle?

I really wouldn't worry about it. The faces have to be made distinct because they all looked exactly the same in the original due to being so pixelated. Plus, he's hardly an important character; he only has about 45 seconds of screentime, and is so unmemorable that Mataku and myself forgot what his name was.

I'm curious, do people really prefer stuff like brown shoes instead of orange JUST because the original is like that?
I mean, I've seen a lot of comments about how some people don't like some things because they are not like the original version, for me at least, that's not a valid reason. Not if you don't explain WHY you think the original is better.

Are reasons why the new version is better, they give the character a more complete personality. I never really saw that hat as "cool", just weird.

No, I actually do like the brown shoes better. I liked the dark clothing a lot more. I can't really put my finger on the reason, but I think it's just because Ralphie seems like sort of a mysterious, dark, sly character anyway. So when he has bright clothing and orange shoes, it sort of takes that aspect of the character away... for me anyway.
I never really saw that hat as "cool", just weird.
I saw it as both. I liked the hat because it reflected his personality (well, what I believed to be his personality). The character himself was a little weird, so why not make his clothing weird too? A turban is not weird, it just shows one's culture; whereas a top hat made of dark-green rags is quite unusual, just like the character waring it.
I would also imagine that Ralphie is a little poor, and relies on this whole scam in order to survive. But his fancy turban and brightly coloured clothing say otherwise.
But then again, I do like the belt buckle, and that would suggest that he has a reasonable amount of money/gold/pieces of eight. Unless the belt buckle is something that he managed to stumble upon one day, or is something given to him by somebody and is something that he cherishes and would never sell - and maybe that could be why it doesn't suit the rest of his clothing. But this is just mindless speculation about a character of which I know next to nothing, that's partially why this text is in size 1 font.
But I kinda like his new face, gives him more character.
Yes, but that's mainly due to the new, detailed graphics. If his face were to have been more like the original, but more detailed, then it too would have given him more character.
Has anyone else noticed in the making of video, when the guy at the end is talking about going back to the original game, the bartender's head disappears for a second!

Was that an issue in the original game too?
Are you sure he's not just leaning down to grab something? I remember he spent his time cleaning glasses with spit, so he could just be picking up or putting down glasses and the cursor got in the way of showing it.
EDIT: I didn't have time before, but I just checked out the vid again and I see what you mean. It's far too quick to be what I previously suggested.
I think that's most likely a glitch/bug, in which case if Lucasarts hasn't already fixed this, then please do so (they've been pretty good at fixing previous issues so far )
On a separate note, I don't have access to my copy of MI2 to check this at the moment but was the right side of the screen that dark in the original (non-SE version)?
Looking over the rest of the video, actually, it seems like it's using an unfinished version of the game. For example, it doesn't have the blades of grass blowing in the campfire scene as they were in the leaked video, Guybrush doesn't always gradually stop walking as he did in the leaked video, etc.
Unless, of course, they've just taken these things out of the game to save on space? I hope not, and I hope it's just an old version of the game the video uses. IMuse is also not working in the video, which LA confirmed WAS working on Facebook the other day. I really can't wait to hear the iMuse effects in the game.

I think that's the case, the video was probably made with the SE in development. Similarly, if you check the making of video of the first special edition, it also had some interesting stuff, like the voodoo cauldron at the Voodoo Lady's place being the old one.
I'm aware that the video is not from the final version and this glitch has most likely already been sorted but it's good that people are spotting this stuff just in case it hasn't already been brought to the developers attention.
Actually, I think us fans should be charging Lucasarts for our services as game testers
Ok, for those who remember, I've just managed to successfully put the MI2 face into MI1:SE Guybrush.
Yes, it looks rough at the moment, but It's just a test, and the squashed-ness of it it just the scaling I think. However, there's a weird transparent line on the left arm (his right), which makes it look severed from the rest of his body. Could that be because the new head position changed how the sprite is positioned overall? Sorry for being such a noob, this is the first time I've done this! :P
So far I've only done one frame, and probably won't be doing much more until Monkey Island 2: Special Edition comes out, so that I can get all the frames, but I think this is a project I'm willing to take on.
Actually to change the character in the game is pretty simple. You just need to change the sprites for the character and the whole game will render them for you at the end! so... perhaps a future commentary/hair update of guybrush from Lucasarts can help.
As much as Lucas Arts is in question for me I respect what they've done. I don't necessarily love it but they need the support to do something good and right. Maybe that's why they are taking inspiration from TTG...
I'm a major Star Wars fan but I'm sick of SW games from LA...
I'm really psyched for this game. That being said, some of the designs obviously seem to be exaggerated to an extent (Huge heads, noses, etc.). The Bart/Fink guy with the moustache has a really weird design. Some of the designs look great though!

Just switch to classic mode on that part.
This.
Please refresh my memory ;_;
EDIT:
I just remembered WHERE he appears. Forgot WHY though. I don't recall him being necessary for any puzzle or something... Or is he?

I agree with you on this:
But I kinda like his new face, gives him more character. Shame about the vivid eye gouging green though.
Still, i'm excited! Can't wait to play this!

Yeah, he looks a bit like one of the seven dwarfs.
best!
