Honestly... I'm not sure. Matt Smith seems like he could be a good Doctor, and Amelia Pond is a pretty good 'assistant', but... I dunno, something just didn't click for me.

I'll give it time. I'm almost certain it will grow on me (probably around episode 3 -
    Daleks! And Churchill!
). But right now... it was 'meh'.

    !! BRILLIANT !!

I was keeping my expectations low so that I wouldn't be disappointed... gosh there was certainly no need for that! I was totally hooked from start to finish.

My flatmate walked in towards the end and could tell straight away that I was watching Doctor Who... not from what was on the TV screen, but from the look of sheer rapture on my face. :p

Awesome episode. Exciting, pacy, SO many laugh-out-loud lines. Matt Smith did a great job as the new doctor. The new assistant is gorgeous, and the dynamic they've established between her and the Doctor looks really promising. I can't wait to see what Steven Moffat has in store for us this series.

In short - more please! :D

Did I gush enough? Maybe I should add some more exclamation marks...

Guh this isn't on in the US for a few weeks I believe. Some Telltale folks are going to WonderCon tonight to watch it early, though.

    Woo:
    • Matt Smith and Karen Gillan - good dynamic between them and great acting from both. I didn't have any doubts about Matt Smith.
    • Camera work/effects - tracing everyone's line of sight in the village and Matt emerging through the projection of the other Doctors.
    • What's to come - the trailer at the end of the episode confirmed Saturday evening television is back with a bang.
    Boo:
    • New title sequence... - feels too slow; doesn't give the impression that the TARDIS is flying through time, just that it's taking a leisurely glide through some clouds.
    • ...and it's music - kicks in towards the second half, but it doesn't really get me going like the old theme.
    • No more Tennant - what can I say? While I think Matt Smith is great, Tennant is still where it's at. For now...

I really enjoyed it, and having just rewatched it (in HD), i can say it's even better on a repeat watching. I'm not so keen on the new title music. It might be because it starts off with the familiar first few notes, but completely changes, which threw me off. Maybe it'll grow on me. Here it is, if anyone wants to relisten

Matt Smith is an amazing doctor, and pulled off the whole "i'm regenerating, still a bit loopy/ill" thing alot better than other doctors have done.

One thing i did notice, was the amount of filming goofs there were. Usually a barely notice them, but i noticed a fair few
The doctor slides a photo the wrong way on the phone (but it still scrolls the right way)

All the phones taking photos of the sun are all turned off.

He was hit by a Cricket bat, and had no cuts?

He says " I have twenty minutes to save the world" twice, with a 2 minute gap between them. He then goes on to say 17 minutes until the incineration (which is fine, given that there were actually 17 minutes of on-screen time until then). It just seemed odd to me.

The Tardis Doors Opened the wrong way at the beginning. The always opened inwards (to block the cameras view of the inside), yet here we see them splayed outwards.

Did they change continuity people aswell?

Overall, one of the better New doctor episodes (far better than Tennants, where he slept through half of it), and a promising start for Matt.

Yeah, he did it very well. With him following Tennant I think it was important for Matt Smith to have a strong start, and he pulled it off with plenty of charm and energy in those scenes. For some reason I really liked the part where he
sucked all the custard off that fish finger before eating it
    - that was a nice touch.

You're pretty observant! I did notice one towards the end where
the Doctor is talking to the giant eye... in one shot, he's just wearing a shirt, then when the camera cuts away/back he's wearing his jacket without anyone seeming to have handed it to him. Or maybe I just blinked at the point that happened.
    :p

They said that about Eccleston too when Tennant took over, and presumably for each time on the old series. I still miss Eccleston... ("But you're an alien... you sound like you're from the north." "Every planet's got a north!")

Dunno what to think of the new title music, but the characters worked, so did the writing. Overall was a good start. Am generally looking forward to what Moffat's going to bring with creative direction over it now, I really liked the stuff he did with James Nesbitt and that Jekyll series a few years back.

I want to see the library with the swimming pool in it though. Mind, it would be nice to see any of the other rooms in the Tardis, given that its supposed to be bigger than just the control room.

Man, this episode was fantastic. Utterly spellbinding stuff, Matt Smith makes a fantastic doctor, he was just so full of life! And the new companion seems like a fun one to have around. What i loved was the direction of the episode, it was very Filmic, I could really feel Moffat's touch in this new series. Overall, a great start, and i'm looking forward to what comes next! That teaser certainly hyped me to the nines :-)

What I wouldn't give for a good Doctor Who game :-)

Well, in the old Tom baker serial: The invasion of time, you got to see tens of extra rooms. He had a lot of swimming pools. And alot of corridors that looked suspiciously like the BBC's basement. It's part of the doctor who: Bred for war box set, if you fancy picking it up. It is a very long serial though (7 episodes)

Yeah, I said it for Eccleston too. It just takes a while for the change to set in, especially when Tennant was at it for longer with three series and all the specials.

If anyone's interested in the bloopers, there's a thread on the Doctor Who forum here.

I didn't! Eccleston was great but I was mad keen when the regeneration turned out to be David Tennant, because he was so brilliant in the Blackpool series (well worth a watch btw if you haven't seen it).

Eccleston was my first doctor, and he was fantastic (pun/refference intended). Yet, i was open to Tennant. At first i wasn't sure he was right for the role, and that feeling stayed until midway through series 2, where he began to grown into the role. Matt Smith Just seemed to click for me this time.

I would love to see Eccleston return though. If even for a few audio adventures (like Paul McGann did/is doing, along with some of the other doctors). I'm hoping they will do a 3/4/5/6 doctor episode for the 50th anniversary in 2012.

Saw it on WonderCon. I'm jealous that Jake is watching it right now. I wanna see it again, because it was so amazingly good! I like Matt Smith a lot, his real transformation to the new Doctor in his new cloth gave me shivers, and the new Intro is awesome in my opinion. I really need to see it again.

I had a stupid grin on my face when he was finally fully dressed, and entered the TARDIS!

Yeah, it was really good. I'm one of those people that watches Dr Who when it's on, but who doesn't really like most of the episodes. There are a couple of really cool episodes in between a lot of crap ones. But this new season fills me with a lot of hope, now that RTD is gone and Moffat is in charge. I was listening to a BBC documentary about when Douglas Addams (writer of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Dirk Gently) was writing for Dr. Who, and the way he tried to change Dr. Who into something bigger, more creative than anything else on tv. (Listen to it here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00rp3dw)

Douglas really was a genius, and at the end of the radio show they claim the new series (starting with Eccleston) was the moment they finally got Douglas' vision right. I don't think that is entirely true, but starting with this episode, they might be right. The script was fast, funny, sharp, exciting and most of all: it felt like a couple of very smart writers had a lot of fun thinking of a story. Matt was great as the doctor, and for the first time ever, I'm in love with the Doctor's companion. A massive leap in quality after the previous episodes (Note: I didn't have a problem with Tennant at all, just the writing and direction of most of his episodes). The hour flew by, and this episode made me excited about future Who-episodes like never before. In Moffat we trust, and all that.

Oh, and Neil Gaiman is writing an episode. The world just got a bit more awesome.

I hope all these TTG-employees going to Wondercon to watch the new Who (and Jake watching it after Wondercon) are doing research for....something...

When Douglas Adams took over Doctor Who, he was crippled by one thing - the budget. The man had great ideas, but the show simply couldn't afford half of them. Thankfully the show doesn't have problems like that nowadays, but it's still worth remembering that no matter how good the showrunner is, there will always be something he's fighting against.

I watched the episode again this afternoon, and aside from not being able to understand some of the lines (particularly Young Amy - no offence meant to the Karen Gillan's cousin [yes, really, they're cousins], but she had a bit of a difficult-to-decipher accent), it went down a lot better then the first time I saw it. Still seemed a little mad, but it was an introductory story. The whole 'The Doctor's a few years late again' thing was rather disappointingly skipped over with a simple 'oops', but eh, forgivable.

Glad I wasn't the only one to spot the thing with the TARDIS doors opening the wrong way! As for the jacket though, if you watch Matt Smith, he walks away from the Atraxi towards the other two just before it starts going through the images of the previous Doctors. Presumably, one of the two was carrying his jacket. Or he simply ran downstairs uber-quick and grabbed it. Either way, there's an excuse.

Anyway. Good episode, still can't wait for Ep 3, the new theme is definitely growing on me. Woo!

I had the feeling there was a big chunk of Douglas Adams in that episode:
The Aliens, talking to Earth via radio and TV, threatening to destroy the planet... that reminded me a lot of the beginning of the Hitchhikers Guide, with Vogon Yeltz talking to earth before destroying it. Even the voice sounds similar.

I really need to read the rest of that trilogy (what were there, 6 books? I've only read the first, and loved it)

There's been alot of talk about Him recently. He was mentioned on BBC radio 4 earlier, and they did a little bit about him and his history with doctor who. And i just watched an old episode which had a planet called Vogor in it, and couldn't stop thinking of him.

One thing that always confused me with him and doctor who was that he used a different writers name (David Agnew). Surely it would have been better publicity on both parts to use Douglas' Adams real name?
  • edited April 2010
Douglas Adams wrote a trilogy of five Hitchhiker books, and Eoin Coifer recently came out with the officially-licensed sixth, which I haven't read yet 'cause I'm waiting for the paperback version.

Also, David Agnew. Check the 'Examples' section.

Yepp I was lucky enough to be the last person they let into this one screening (with Majus).
I basically had a fanboy/geekasm the whole time while watching it. It was an emotional rollercoster ride from
    him finding his favourite flavor
    to him suddenly saying
"It must be a very scary crack in the wall then"
. Also I like the fact that in every teaser, they milk the fact that
the Doctore WILL shoot a gun
    .
Sadly my english wasn't good enough to keep up with the fast talking AND the soundquality in the room. Sometimes the voices were just to dull for me to understand correctly.

So far I really like the 11th Doctor. Watching it in a room full of Doctor Who fans might have added to that.

Tennant was good, but he wasn't as good as Eccleston, or Davison. In my view anyway. He was still an amazing doctor, just not the best, but that was partly due to the writing (doctor who used to be semi-realistic with the fact that if anything big happened it was in the far future, or past, or could be covered up. Dalek invasion of earth? Happened 20XX instead of 2008, so they didn't have to keep mentioning it all the time...[/rant])

Anyway, Saturday's episode was pretty amazing, and you can clearly see that Moffet was in charge. And Amy is really coming along as the companion.

Question: Do you guys get Doctor who confidential (the making of each episode) over there (anywhere Abroad?)?

I'm a bigger fan of Eccleston then I was of Tennant, but they were both good actors and just what the show needed at the time. Smith is definitely turning out to be a good choice and Karen Gillan is a great match for him. Hope they both stay with the show for a good while.

Am I the only one who thought The Beast Below, while brilliant, was just a little too fast paced? It seemed to zip through every scene as if afraid they'd run out of time. I could easily see this working as a two-parter - spend a bit longer on each scene, place a cliffhanger when
they end up in the Space Whale's mouth
, let Liz 10 develop a bit more...

Ah well. It can't be a bad thing if you're asking for more of a show rather than less!

EDIT: Apparently, the first episode airs in Australia at Midnight (!) on Friday the 16th, on ABC IView. Be interesting to see what you guys think of Matt Smith.
