'The Adventures of Tintin' - 9/10
This film has some of the most inventive, clever and well-choreographed action sequences I've ever seen. They may lack verisimilitude, but they're unbelievably fun and engaging. Why? Because in this case, enjoyment is prioritized over realism, and the sequences (and subsequently, the film as a whole) are better for it. Besides, what the action scenes lack in believability, they make up for in genuine excitement and viewer tension - tension which exists thanks to the well-told story and strong characterization, which makes me actually interested in what happens in the movie. It gives the action sequences meaning and importance, which is much more vital than realism is (in a film like this anyway).

Are you married? Probably not. Okay then. Shut your trap.

No, I'm not married but I've had plenty of girlfriends. Either way, I'm not sure that ones relationship status should dictate whether ones entitled to express their opinion or not.

It's not so much the relationship status itself as the experience which accompanies it. Chyron is telling you to keep your opinions to yourself, since he believes that he has better knowledge of this particular situation thanks to having more experience in married life.

Anyway, the 'shut your trap' comment was sparked mostly by the manner in which you're expressing this opinion, which is in a blatantly trollish manner. And it's not really even clever trolling; it's sort of coming off as a bit juvenile, actually.

Shut your trap and don't be a dick, Davies... ;)

It's just my sense of humour. I'm gonna stay away from this site for a while and try and tone it down a bit when I come back. Thanks for the advice. See you all in a few months. :)

Well, it wasn't my intent to scare people away from the site altogether. :\

In any case, I believe that regardless of the value of legitimate argument for or against the Twilight series, it has become tiresomely popular to bitch about Twilight.

For the record, it's been a long time since I read the books, but I recall having said after reading them that the best part of the story is the latter part of Book 4 (Breaking Dawn,) starting after when the perspective switches to Jacob's point of view. I have also said that before that point Edward is annoyingly melancholy, Jake is a jerk and Bella is a tease. With all that being said, to complain about Twilight has now become as much or more popular than complaining about Escape from Monkey Island on here was after ToMI came out.

My mom is a big fan of the series and has complained about how she would like to enjoy it in peace without having to put up with all the trolls.

    Sherlock Holmes, Too?:

Terrible. Downey, Law, and Harris are all horribly miscast and awful decisions for the part, and the film fails to capture the true nature of a Sherlock Holmes mystery by removing any detective work and replacing it with fight scenes and slow-motion running from explosions (there is a solid five minutes of running from explosions towards the conclusion, which I almost fell asleep during). The gag of Sherlock being a master of disguise was a nice touch most adaptations seem to forget, but the fact it was used so often made me dislike it so much that I rolled my eyes each time it came around. And also the plot was more or less the same as that of Johnny English Reborn, but with a more predictable conclusion.

    3/10

(Alternately, bad and there were no penguins, 1/5)

Don't have specific reviews for either. They were both pretty good!

Although it's not exactly a film, at a 180-minute miniseries it's fairly close to it, but I've watched the BBC/Masterpiece adaptation of Great Expectations, which has been stellar. Although some key bits I miss had been cut (Wemmick's home, for instance) and subplots dropped (To be fair, I always felt the subplots with Mr. Pocket's tutoring and Joe's remarriage to not mesh with the themes of the book so well). In terms of the overall plot, it's been lovingly adapted, but the only real losses are in making Joe's significance lesser than in the novel. Two scenes I consider essential to this plot and the most memorable in the book were cut to fit the time slot, which greatly lessened one of the bigger themes. However, everything else is exceptional - the fellow who plays Compeyson was really good at playing evil, and David Suchet surprises me with a cold, regretful Jaggers (who is nothing like Poirot). Just a wonderful, wonderful love letter to the book that is more faithful then any adaptation I have seen yet; 9/10.

Last year I watched a few movies and totally forgot about this thread, so let me grade them all now in the new year (Better late than never). :)

    Megamind - 10/10
In it's release to the big screen in 2010 I was not interested in it at all.
Which is a real shame because it would have been awesome to watch on the big screen.
The whole take on the superhero vs super villain where you follow the villains story is so nicely done.
And the whole fact that they was able to make a villain you can sympathize with is a great twist.
The animations was superbly done, especially the work they put into Megamind's facial animations.
It was packed with funny moments and I could never stop laughing.
But under all the stunning visuals and humor the plot is so well thought out with a lot of underlying themes of, bullying, fitting in, self esteem and acceptance.

    Conan the Barbarian - 7/10
Well what can I say, it was an action movie that delivered the action. An adventure movie that delivered the adventure. There is not really anything else to say about it really. The story was kind of bland and it seemed to me the story ended to quickly just when the story was starting to get exiting. Like everything was rushed, which is a shame as I think it could have been a really good movie.

Sherlock Holmes - A Game of Shadows 9/10
This movie was a planned ting with my Boyfriend, and as promised this movie was even greater fun than the first.
I really liked it although I just have this feeling it was missing something.
All in all it was a really good movie and I enjoyed it immensely.

    Gladiator - 8/10
By accident I told my Boyfriend that I have never really seen this movie, so he insisted we saw it.
I remember bits from it, but I have never sat down and seen it from end to end.
It was good, but it didn’t have the wow effect on me. To be honest I thought it was kind of complicated and hard to follow when people was talking, but I could easily understand what was going on when the fighting started. :P

Gokaiger Goseiger 199 Heroes- 6/10 Fun, Epic final battle, but pretty disappointing. Proved that one member of the Goseiger team is more powerful than all of the Gokaigers combined.

Dirty Harry: Loved it. I know it's technically not a hard-boiled detective movie, but it sure felt like it and now I know the context for all those lines I've been quoting for years. Really makes me want to go write something.

Mr. Popper's Penguins: It was better than I thought it would be. I think I'd rate it as "cute", a bit like Mrs. Doubtfire with penguins only not as funny because no Robin Williams. There were a few chuckle moments and I did love the p-word alliterations as I have some experience with those (as anyone on G+ will confirm). All in all I didn't feel like I wasted my time, but I probably won't go and watch it again.

Harry Potter Meets A Ghost (The Woman In Black) - 7/10

It was decent. I jumped quite a few times and my friend had hers hands over hers eyes for a good part of the movie. The ending, however, was horrible. It did give me my first Daniel Radcliffe fix since I saw How To Succeed on Broadway so it gets points for that.

What it says in the title. Also give it some commentary and would you recommend it to anyone. Also post a trailer link.

Last movie I've seen was Wall-e. I think that the actors did a pretty good job. You could somehow feel the emotion in the voices. And yes, I confess I once cried during the movie. I liked it a lot, and also did my family and friends. It wasn't my first Pixar movie, or the first time I saw it, but I saw it again cause it's my favourite. It's a nice movie to watch with family, friends, or anyone you want. And yes, I'd recommend it to everyone.

It's not the movie, but I'm not aware of a recently watched TV series thread... in any case, I've decided to watch Stargate SG-1 from start to finish (having previously never watched more than a handful of episodes). I am currently at the start of season 4, and I have to say that it really is a good show.

Granted, there is some disbelief to suspend and inconsistencies between movie and show to tolerate: all alien races speak English (without need for a universal translator); guns have no recoil; Daniel's wife's name is pronounced differently... etc. Once you are aware of said problems and are willing to overlook them, the show is very good.

When it was on the air, I thought the lack of gun recoil make combat on the show look fake and was then unwilling to overlook it, but now it doesn't really bother me.

    A bit of background:

I hated Ponyo and Howl's Moving Castle, and Princess Mononoke is my favorite Miyazaki film.

With that out of the way:

I may have a new favorite Studio Ghibli film.

This is the one that's like The Borrowers? I saw that at a friends house last week. Good stuff. I doubt anything will ever beat Princess Mononoke for myself though.
