I think the problem with using words like "fake" is that people will read a bad connotation even if you didn't mean one.
Even though the whole of Avistew's post was full of quality stuff, I'm just going to point this out. It's seems like many of you in favor of body mods seem to think that the words 'fake' and 'bad' are interchangeable in this discussion/debate, whereas this is not entirely the case.
I mean, to begin with, it seemed some of you were arguing against an invisible poster, because in my original few posts, and the ones to follow, nobody directly said that body mods were a negative thing.
Should also only eat, drink, and wear the bare essentials of life? By your point, there's no need for *any* form of extravagance or other decisions that are ultimately pointless at all.
It's cool if you're not into that sorta thing, I know several folks who aren't into it either and it's fine, but your reasoning and pooh poohing those who aren't to par with what you find attractive isn't. Saying that piercings are being mean to your body is like saying cutting your hair is being mean to your body. It responds in a very similar fashion, and when properly taken care of, the body gets used to the fact that it happened. wh
en you don't maintain it, it grows back to where it was/seals up.
Body mods of any variety, major or minor, is just one way a person may choose to decorate themselves. Decoration of the body is universal found in every human culture, be it extravagant or simple. If a supernatural entity (assuming the existence, of course) didn't want us to use body mods, it wouldn't have made us with such a desire to decorate our bodies.
That's because the word fake as a description of a person is generally a negative term. I'm sure you don't actually mean it, but would you feel okay with somebody call you fake?
Oh, and like every other thread where this comes up, I have to point out that I personally don't really "mod" my body in an extreme way other than piercings in the ears, nor do I expect everyone to "mod" their bodies so as well.
I'm sure you don't actually mean it, but would you feel okay with somebody call you fake?
Well, by the definitions that I give, I am fake. I wear clothes for reasons other from practicality; I wear t-shirts with band logos on them to show that I like the band, I make sure my clothes don't clash, I wear clothes that I think look good, etc. So, based on what I've been saying, I am not 100% real, am I? So, since I have essentially labeled myself 'fake' to some degree, then my answer is 'no'; if someone called me fake in the same way I have called myself fake, and for the same reasons, I would feel okay .
And, tracing back to my original statement(s), I was merely stating that the girl in Image A was not 100% real, meaning that in a manner that was not meant to be offensive or biased against those specific body mods; it was a statement made for argument's sake.
Saying that piercings are being mean to your body is like saying cutting your hair is being mean to your body. It responds in a very similar fashion, and when properly taken care of, the body gets used to the fact that it happened.
Welllll... hair is actually dead material. Skin isn't.
Welllll... hair is actually dead material. Skin isn't.
Also, relating to this mini-discussion (sort of), if you remove something from your body, then your body is still 100% natural, isn't it? If you cut your hair or clip your toenails, then there's less of you than there was before, but there's still the same percentage of natural you. A piercing or a tattoo, on the other hand, is something than you put on your body in addition, which means that you are no longer 100% natural, but rather somewhere around 99.9% natural.
We're beginning to get completely pedantic over this now, but the discussion is still interesting.
@Giant Tope
No, i enjoy quite some extravagances but none of them includes harming your body on a more long term basis. That's where i personally differ and i'm not pooh poohing here, just stating my opinion which might be intrusive to you if you have a different opinion but that's your problem in my opinion again then.
Comparing piercings with cutting your hair doesn't work as a comparison. You could compare cutting your hair with painting your fingernails, which both can end up beautiful. Piercings and body mods on the other side you should more compare with natives who wear rings around their neck to stretch their neck with each year or inside their earlaps with the same goal. That's destructive in my opinion because it doesn't respect the human body and i don't care if this is based on culture or religion.
Next stage is cutting the clitoris and the list goes on with all the nonsense mankind came up with due to some culture or religious reasons and these things vary on a scale from slight to hard crimes against your body. It makes me sad thinking of certain pictures where people did this to themselves in a more extreme way.
I'm certainly oldskool in this respect but i prefer kissing a woman with one tongue instead of that a three cleaved whatever with piercings on each top enters my mouth and who knows reacts with the fillings in my teeth.
The point of this thread is that they're the same girl, and we all end up voting for B because everyone liked a classy-looking girl better than one with part of her hair dyed pink.
Wrong? Oh, okay.
Yeah, figured that was the case too. I don't really find either photo attractive but out of the two, I prefer the first because she doesn't look real in the second one.
I mean, to begin with, it seemed some of you were arguing against an invisible poster, because in my original few posts, and the ones to follow, nobody directly said that body mods were a negative thing.
My post was more of a general thing, as it's something I've seen quite often lately. It did come off a bit judgmental though, in hindsight.
edit: i should add that i dont mean "OMG Y U DONT LIEK MOD" but rather, i find it curious that most nerds i know have this weird distaste for mods of any kind.
Because I don't wanna have to bring a girl with luminous pink hair, a pierced eyeball and a tattoo reading 'Hatefuck' home to meet Mammy Exodus I guess.
Other than that I don't really mind, as long it's classy
That's destructive in my opinion because it doesn't respect the human body and i don't care if this is based on culture or religion.
Who are you to judge how someone wants to pay respect to their bodies? When we revere something, we decorate it with all sorts of things. Some folk's ultimate form of respect to their bodies are permanent ornamentation. Hell, some people don't even feel comfortable in the own skin they were born in. These people change the way they look in order to be happy with themselves. Do you think they should suffer for the sake of satisfying the visual/moral needs of others?
The fact of the matter is that most common mods, such as a simple piercing, causes less damage upon initial piercing than the initial shooting of a vaccine (as well as a lot less painful!), and if properly cared for and healed, causes no harm at all. The statements that you've made concerning this comes off very concern trollish, if that means anything to you.
You are seriously comparing the consented choice of someone making a decision about their own body with female circumcision. Wow. Really? You're really doing this?
I'm certainly oldskool in this respect but i prefer kissing a woman with one tongue instead of that a three cleaved whatever with piercings on each top enters my mouth and who knows reacts with the fillings in my teeth.
I'm not sure why you think it's old school to think that way. I think it's just personal preference, but whatever.
The fact that you ended your statement on this note leads me to believe that the only reason why you have these sentiments about mods is that you find them unattractive. And again your own personal taste in whom ever you are attracted to is fine. I personally do not understand the motive behind what some people do to their bodies or find a lot of it to be unattractive, however if they want to do that, then they're free to do so. It's not up to me to decide what others should do to their bodies to make themselves happy. Going out and singling out a minority of the population and making disrespectful blanket statements about them is just not cool.
Because I don't wanna have to bring a girl with luminous pink hair, a pierced eyeball and a tattoo reading 'Hatefuck' home to meet Mammy Exodus I guess.
Other than that I don't really mind, as long it's classy
Yeah, other than the pink hair, which I wouldn't really mind either way as long as it was managed well, I wouldn't be into that either. I like vintage rockabilly/40's style looks more than anything, which in the modern day is a mix bag between no mods and lots of mods. I meant like, getting up in arms over something as simple as a small tattoo or a cart piercing.

Oh i'm with you there, i'm in the market for a nice bowling shirt myself at the minute, mostly cos I like the idea of me playing geetar with one on Brian Setzer style
People who just get upset about anything without entertaining the idea aren't worth listening to. Like I wouldn't get a tattoo but I have on occassion seen some truly beautiful tattoos. Mostly it's just tramp stamps and some faded green shit that's apparently someones name though
@Giant Tope
You somehow don't seem to understand the concept of having different opinions, do you? Personally i can judge things just the way i like them, no matter how someone else feels about it.
The stories i heard about people who did strange mods to them sounded to me like something wasn't right with their lifes, therefore it might be a better approach trying to find and fix maybe existing problems instead as otherwise chances exist that after some time they'll regret it.
Sometimes it's a scream for help which articulates in such a way. Here you could also add social pressure in a group with smoking/alcohol/tattoos/piercing or that it's hip for a season as well. I don't want to know how many women ended up with an Arschgeweih, i have no idea what that means in english, due to this.
Now obviously there also exist cases where people just do it because they really want it on their own and are happy with their piercings or having some devil like metal horns coming out of their head, although i wonder how much the later one could reduce your chances getting a priest or president of the USA. One night you also might get awake by some screaming from your girlfriend "My eye, my eye, i can't see anymore...".
Anyway do whatever pleases you but let me judge it the way i see it and there might be a border where i just prefer if i don't have to see you every day. I dislike these things due to the reasons i wrote above already, for me it's destroying something natural which is very beautiful already. I dislike the concept, how it might look like and how it might harm the physical functionality and the health of your body as well.
Oh i'm with you there, i'm in the market for a nice bowling shirt myself at the minute, mostly cos I like the idea of me playing geetar with one on Brian Setzer style
Man, I've been growing out my hair to get some pretty epic pin curls! Still too short to even get any curls in the back.
This is a photographer who does vintage pin up shoots for women, and it can take up to 2 hours just to get the entire look up! Regardless, I would love to do this. Too bad the photographer's in Australia. :0

Yeah.. Those who aren't willing to commit to taking care of their tats probably shouldn't get them. It takes a lot of skin care to keep the tats looking nice and vibrant. I'd even say that dedicated tattoo enthusiasts take better care of their skin than most regular folk.
I keep pondering on if I ever got a tat, what sort would it be, but I can't keep to one idea, plus it'd be way too expensive for me right now. So I guess if I were to get one, it would be off in the very distant future. XD

Australia you say, hmm?? Interesting...
I think both women are attractive. I don't wear makeup myself(I might if I knew how to use it!). I do my nails pretty often, does that count?
Hurry up Doodo, I want to know what the point is to this god-awful mess of a thread you've created.
I think both are fine as well, I just like getting dressed up. Makes me feel really pretty. XD
I used to not know how to use make up, but when I went to Taiwan, my aunt was basicly: "Hey. Make up. I'm gonna teach you how to do it. Also, let's go get your ears pierced." So those were taught to me, and even though I don't wear make up on a regular basis, it's still really nice to know how to do it.
I think the main reason I wouldn't get a tattoo is that I can't think of anything I'm sure I wouldn't change my mind about. But if you really want a specific tattoo, then I can absolutely believe that you can know that you'll keep liking it. People make permanent decisions all the time, such as having kids for instance, and people don't go around telling them "don't do it, what if you hate having a kid when you're eighty?" even though lots of kids grow up to be a pain in their parents' asses.
I'm more likely to get a piercing, because it's something you can change, and if you get tired of it, don't wear any piercing and it closes. I actually had pierced ears at some point, so I know it's something I have done in the past. I don't think I would do it again though because I ended up regretting it. I also think there is a lot of room for putting accessories that aren't directly on me, be it rings, bracelets, necklaces (none of which I usually wear, although I have a ring now), or accessories worn on my clothes or glasses for instance, so I don't feel the need to create spots on my body for them.
Oh, and most "it's not natural" arguments annoy the hell out of me. I hear them about so many things, and people are usually against something specific but for other just as unnatural things. Especially when you get God into it. You get people be very enthusiastically against birth control because it's going against God's will, but they're not against surgery that saves lives (hey, you're going against God's will to kill that person!). Or you say "God would have made me like this if he wanted that" but won't have any trouble wearing clothes or using a car or an elevator, or taking a plane. Or people say "I don't think being vegetarian is natural, people are meant to eat meat, even if you can survive healthily not eating it nowadays, I don't think you should because our bodies weren't designed for it" and they eat burgers and other things that are obviously not found in nature such as chips or candy or really any processed food.
People are quick to have double standards between things they like. Something is "natural" if they're for it, but it's "the middle ages" if they don't. It's "progress" if they like it, it's "unnatural" if they don't. It's really annoying. I'm not saying I never do that, I might be guilty of it myself, but I want to draw attention to that. That kind of argument is flawed because you're saying "it's bad because I think it's bad", since both natural and man-made things can be considered either good or bad by you depending on OUTSIDE factors.
It's a bit like people who say "I believe X because X is in the Bible". But the Bible will have other things they disagree with. So they don't believe X BECAUSE it's in the Bible. They believe it, AND it's in the Bible, so they turn to that, but when you can point out everything they don't agree with from the Bible, their argument just falls flat. So, use other arguments, if you can, because these ones just don't hold water.
The people i know are able to differ between certain aspects of their lifes and therefore one could say: I'm against tattoos because they don't feel natural to me.
[And it can sound quite unnatural pumping some colours, which according to their colour and therefore mixture also contain substances which can cause allergies or due to their pigment size end up in your lymph and/or blood system, getting nailed into the second layer of your skin with a few thousand stings per minute and resting there by beeing encapsulated by your immune system. Medicine can also be very unnatural but i really differ regarding the signification for the majority between a plate which fixes your broken bone and some metal balls under the skin of your head to get some weird surface.]
Then again the same person tries to eat less or no meat because whilst she knows that she's an omnivore she also has some understanding of a food chain and how energy transforms in this one and the problems it causes if we all eat too much of it and the sanity makes it an natural approach again. You can find such approaches in many situations leading into different directions but showing that naturalness and rationality goes hand in hand quite often.
I changed my mind, this shit's going to get locked by the end of the freaking day.
I wouldn't be so sure; this is incredibly tame discussion compared to page 1 material, and the thread wasn't even locked then, for some bizarre reason. And plus, this thread has been up for around 30 hours now (I think), several admins would have seen it, and if they were going to lock it then I'm sure they would have done it by now.
It is legend that the face of true beauty is too much for mortal eyes, and can cause illness. I always thought it was superstition, but I guess not... Sorry folks.

Damn! Guess I'll have to come up with a new theory.
Everyone is voting A, so the point of the thread is to show that people can't ignore that the fact that B is an advertisement/promotional image?
Both girls are incredibly realistic wax statues?
They're identical twins?
The point of the thread is to spark an argument over the degree of fakeness in body mods and accessories?
There is no point?
Actually you're all the interesting part about this whole thing. I'll tell you in a few days.:)
