Well tomorrow start protagonist design. Will continue inking backgrounds and also start inking supporting cast. I suppose I can discuss the plot of the game in a bit more detail come tomorrow as well.

Oh my god that last picture looks so awesome.

    Well it does.
  • edited February 2011
Ok, your game looks AMAZING but I think you're getting into a HUGE project. You aren't planning on going this alone are you? This project looks epic...
  • edited February 2011
I'd be more worried if the concept sketches were going in game. They're more ideas for the future. Outside of a few more backgrounds I haven't drawn yet, the game will take place in the background sketches you've seen. Once everything is inked it will get painted which is why I'm working on PSP skills right now, though slowly.

Working on the walking sequence for the protagonist. Should have it ready to go by Monday.

    Ooo, can't wait!

After a day of playing with PSP and still not entirely mastering it but still getting better... here is Parks.

I think he's my official mascot.
  • edited February 2011
And what an awesome mascot he is. If this is any indication of what the rest of the characters are going to look like, your game is going to look amazing.
  • edited February 2011
You could easily be part of the big 3-4 adventure games out there. This project is looking really good. I hope you have more will power and time than the others have had in the past.
  • edited February 2011
Well fortunately once the characters are done that only leaves the backgrounds (visually speaking) and then run those through game studio.

So the presentation is about 40% done. Unfortunately, the backgrounds are more complicated than the characters, so I'm having a harder time mastering those and blending colors than with the characters.

Thanks Darth. Sadly, coloring each picture takes at least 2 hours.

Are you recoloring every time? I don't think that's how you're supposed to do sprites. i thin you're supposed to make like the character, color in his body, not his arms and then later draw and color different arms and legs and heads that attach to the body...it goes faster, it's how sprites were done.

Redrawing every time would take a long time. Have you ever looked at sprites in ScumVM before, or LucasRipper, rather?
  • edited February 2011
No, I've never heard of those before. Though at least for some of these sub characters there's not much they need moving beside their faces and mouths for the most part.

Here are a few classic examples
    Indy4-SophiaSheet.png

Not my favorite example ^ Zoom in and look to see how it was traditionally done.

For talking, it's typically done the same way, just with a body and a head that opens and closes its mouth.

I added a few examples in the attachments of this post..
  • edited February 2011
A few more attachments, examples. We still do things in this way, when we make 2D sprites.

I hope a 3rd post will be forgiven, this covers a lot...I'm just supporting the project. :D

Thanks doodo I appreciate that. I never thought about doing it like that except for the walking sequence. Though I hadn't given too much thought to animation in general yet. It will certainly help expedite elements.

NP, I feel like we can expect something great from you. I don't know what it is but I feel like you got something here.

You expect to finish this up till June!?

    Most projects take years...

Well the art resources will be done in a month. Then just need to score the scenes.

And you want to do the music too? You're a beast!
  • edited February 2011
Well I'm going to keep the ensemble simple, to a three piece accompaniment. I've played piano for about 24 years and guitar for 10 and drums for about the same. I have some compositional background, just never through electronic medium, so that'll be a learning experience same as PSP.

I remember I was supposed to discuss plot points. Thus, the backstory.

"The Golden Anvil" takes place in the land of Pelageren, a peninsula with only a single land access point to the mainland, through the pass of the Anuvil Mountains. North of Pelagreen, across this mountain range, lie the Barbarian Kingdoms.

Pelagreen itself is a diverse land of forests, mountains and deserts. At its heart, on the Silver Lake, lies the capital city of Felaris. Though the land is mostly lush, far to the east, on the eastern coast, lie the dead lands of the Stillveil. There the imperial forces maintain only islands of strongholds amid the forces of their enemy. The main passage in and out of the veil has become the flash point for the armies against the warlord Azaz and his dark minions.

Still, the greater whole of Pelagreen remains safe through the efforts of the formidable imperial armies. However, weapons are required that can combat the enchanted foes of their enemy. The Order of the Rune Smiths, a guild of blacksmiths capable of forging weapons of magnificent power, work tirelessly to equip the armies of the imperial forces. However, a single weapon greater than all others is needed to defeat Azaz, one forged upon the Golden Anvil, in which all of creation's power is endowed. Prince Pelagreen needs such a weapon to battle Azaz in direct confrontation.

    The Game
More lighthearted than the backstory would surmise, The Golden Anvil concerns the young man Kit. An apprentice smith in the backwater town of Ocenon that sits on the edge of the Anuvil Mountains, Kit will become entangled in a race to reach the city of Felaris as he travels among a small host of companions in an attempt to evade the Black Lich, an evil that moves freely through Pelagreen seeking out the last of the Smithies in order to crush any chance of a weapon being forged than can challenge Azaz.
