I haven't seen anyone share this yet... Portal: No Escape, a live action short based on Portal. Pretty damn good.

    That was fantastic.

I, too, loved the short. Man, I want to be as fit as that woman.

I saw this yesterday, the first half reminded me of Oldboy, the second half kicked ass.

When you watch stuff like this you wonder if a 90 minute screen adaption of Portal would be flat to the mat awesome.

On the bright side at least Tomb Raider had Chris Barrie in it.

But then there's a huge difference between could work and did work. I haven't played a Tomb Raider game (yet), but I firmly believe that a Resident Evil movie could've been amazing if they hadn't tried so hard to avoid the game storyline (and then shoehorned it into the sequels when the first movie sucked without it), and if they'd put in the effort.

If they'd reboot it (and they never will) and treat it as they would a book adaptation, I still think a decent Resident Evil movie could be made.

Right bloody champion he is. At least a Portal movie would have Stephen Merchant?

Aye, I'm not against video game to movie adaptations as a whole. In fact I'm torn between really really wanting a Broken Sword movie, and acknowledging that it would probably never live up to my ridiculously high expectations.

I'm still disappointed that the Bioshock movie didn't work out.

I sort of feel the same regarding a Broken Sword movie, ever since the possibility was announced. I'd like to see it happen as long as the likes of Charles Cecil are fully involved (I hear he's been working on the script for the past year or so, or probably longer!).

That could have been incredible, but I'd be hugely let down if they screwed it up.

Kind of like the Silent Hill sequel. If they drop the ball again...

Well, shit. NDK wouldn't allow me to enter the balcony contest early and get an entry number early, so I can't put my entry number on the test chamber sign. I guess it's going to be 00 after all. Going outside to paint now, so hopefully I'll have a picture of it later tonight.

The details are crap for a couple reasons. First, it's only going to be seen from far away, so I didn't need it to be exact, just close enough to look right at a distance. Second, I couldn't find a decent fine tip paintbrush anywhere in my house.

Damn Guru. That's gonna look absolutely fantastic. Actually, it ALREADY looks fantastic. I'll be surprised if they don't crown you king of balcony design and henceforth judge contests on a "Guru Scale".

That was so sweet. I hope the girl said yes! It reminds me of some fan art I saw in DeviantArt done by someone called Yuumei. It was an instant fave for me.

Edit: Forgot to say! That Portal:No Escape was very well done. The portal effects and the special effects on the gun were very impressive.

At the end of the video it says that she did. :D

Though I bet she was kinda freakin out a little at first. Not often that GLaDOS knows so much about you. lol

It's not really progress, but it's something...

    2011-08-27182238-1.jpg

Unfortunately, we're having a ton of trouble getting the frame to stay upright, the portals don't want to stay glued down, we have no idea how we're going to make the cardboard stand up, and after I took the picture, we cut the slit for the door, and the wind blew the flap over and ripped it a bit.

    Looks like progress to me!

Does it want to tip over backwards now the fabric is attached? Will the balcony have a railing you could tie the frame to? If you used fishing line it probably wouldn't be visible from a bit of a distance.

    Could you use double-sided tape?

I'm not sure of the mechanics of this one... maybe if you explain what needs to happen, we can figure something out!

Stitch it up? Or better yet, have you heard of iron-on mending tape?

Well, it's unchanged from the last shot I posted, it was just briefly upright today.

Actually, it wants to tip forwards. Part of the problem is that the PVC pipe fits really tightly into the couplers, so it's hard to get all the corner pieces straight, so the frame keeps wanting to twist. Part of it is that I think we have it facing the wrong way, and we need to flip it around so that it does want to fall backwards.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking about. Right now, they're attached with spray adhesive, which seems to do great as long as the edges don't start peeling. Which they inevitably do. So I've been thinking about the two-sided tape thing.

Pretend the two vertical lines aren't there. The two diagonal lines are large pieces of cardboard, which have the portals on them.

    2011-08-13190823-1.jpg

We need to put something rigid in the back of them to keep the folds open, then we need to figure out some way of supporting them so they'll stand upright.

    2011-08-04070458-1.jpg
Again, those short sections connecting the portal to the back wall aren't going to be there.

I think we can figure out some way to attach them to the balcony railing, but my friend doesn't think that it'll work.

We were pretty much planning on using duct tape on the back. We were in a hurry to get it out of the wind, so right now it's not even folded properly, and I didn't get a chance to take a good look at how it ripped.

So with the new update, anyone else have the problem where they have to download THE WHOLE GAME all over again?
    Because I do:(
  • edited September 2011
No, it was only 90 megs for me. Have you kept up with previous updates?

Yeah, I just have steam update my games autimaticaly, but here I am, downloading 8,039 megs for this update.
So unless steam fails at automatic updates, and I missed that much of updates, Im downloading the full game(or at least, more than I should be downloading).

Here it is. Our room ended up on the fourth floor, in sort of a back corner that was only visible from a certain part of the atrium. Unfortunately for us, the voting box was sort of inconspicuous, Soul Eater was ridiculously popular this year, people are suckers for memes, and...well, I don't know how to explain the third place winner.

    1st place (Soul Eater):

    2nd place (Nyan Cat):

    3rd place (Spirited Away):

    Also, this:

    DSC00238-1.jpg

Yes, there's a person in there. There was also an awesome Chell, but I didn't get a chance to get a picture.
  • edited September 2011
Damn. Yours is definitely better than all three of those combined.
  • edited September 2011
That's what most people we talked to said. Considering how well-received it was, I was surprised we didn't even place. Like I said, most people didn't even know where the ballot box was this year, which I intend to make every effort to correct next year.

Also, I forgot, after we took pictures of the balcony, we secured the lights on the railing that you can see in the close-ups. At first, we used duct tape, which didn't work and left residue (as well as being against the rules for attaching to the balcony). So I wrapped the ends of the lights in painter's tape, then used more tape to make it look like the railing was splattered with Repulsion Gel.

Oh, and there was at least three other Nyan Cat balconies. The one that took second only did so because it was the biggest and had flashing lights.
  • edited September 2011
That's lame and stupid. You should have won first place, Guru. The Nyan Cat one is the only one of those three that looks good enough to even deserve a place at all, though I would have probably put it at third. I like Soul Eater, but that balcony was nowhere nearly well thought up to warrant first prize. Really. And the Spirited Away one...I'm calling nepotism. Or maybe bribery. That's the only way they could have gotten a place.

Well, you win the official unofficial Alcoremortis award and a gold star because I have nothing else to give.

    ce16006_f.gif

Oh wait, I also have one of those free internet coupons hanging around. Let me dig it up.

Well, it isn't much, but may you use these copywritten images wisely.

The other balconies won because they look busier.
  • edited September 2011
The Nyan Cat one has cool lighting, but besides that none of them are better than GuruGuru's. I demand a recount!
  • edited September 2011
Looking back at the Nyan Cat picture, on closer inspection, there is a TARDIS in the next balcony over!

If it wasn't obvious before, this proves that the judges have no taste if they would let BOTH an excellent Portal and a Doctor Who themed balcony get through without a prize.
  • edited September 2011
It was based on voting, so no judges. But my annoyance with Doctor Who aside, that really was an excellent TARDIS, though that balcony did have an awful lot of negative space.
  • edited September 2011
Well...to be fair, there's not a lot of constants in Doctor Who in the first place. I suppose they could have filled it with a few Daleks or something, but I guess I tend to like simpler designs. It's almost as if the Doctor just stopped by on that balcony to take a quick tour of NDK before flying off again.
  • edited September 2011
Darn. Its never the person that works hard on their projects that win these contest :(
  • edited September 2011
Was the picture taken before you put the number up? Because one differences I notice is that the other balconies have clearly visible numbers, which would make voting more handy. I'm not sure where your number is, though, hopefully it was there during the time people could vote.
  • edited September 2011
Oh, it definitely was. We were first to register for the contest, so we got number 1.

I wonder how many of them even heard of Valve? Or just didnt play their games because IT SUX AND COD IS BETTAH!.

I also wonder if the maps they made from the presentation will be in the DLC. Even if they are terrible, I would like to see what they made.
  • edited September 2011
    So...the DLC wasn't released, right?

Because Valve's snarky "Technically Summer" response was based on last Friday's Equinox.
