You might as well get the whole pack at that price though. That'd be a dollar a game. Sweet.
Not if you're like me and don't even have the $3.22 necessary to get the original three that I actually want. Dark Forces, Dark Forces II, and the Dark Forces II expansion would be really nice.

[bragging] I found those in a used bookstore for a couple of bucks each in the original jewel cases. [/bragging]

Well, I didn't find the expansion to DFII. But I found the others. The only thing is to see if I can get them to run in ScummVM since I had a problem with the savepath. Seems that's a fairly common problem in old games for me.
  • edited February 2012
ScummVM won't run them! DosBox, which I think you meant, will run the original game, since it was made for Dos, but that's it (JK onwards were Windows games). Instead, I recommend you use the XL Engine for the first Dark Forces. If nothing else, it enables Mouse-Look. Trust me, you want Mouse-Look.

As far as I'm aware (or at least, it's the case with my copies) both JK and MotS create a folder in their main directory called 'player'. Inside that is another folder which goes by the same name as the Profile each game gets you to make when you first start it up (so 'Darth Marsden' for me). Your save games and such should be in there. If that's not the case for you, then I'm afraid I can't help you beyond that.

If you do get them running though, for the love of god use Jedi Knight Enhanced and both the Hi-Fi Sounds and MotS Enhanced for Mysteries of the Sith. You'll thank me.

Just use DOSBox for Dark Forces. ScummVM will only ever support 2D adventure games. Nothing else.

Oh they run fine as it is, the only problem is every time I save the game the game shuts down. But it still saves. I'm guessing there's a problem with the savepath because I've had similar problems with other games contemporary to it. So, I could probably fix it if I wanted to go and find the savepath file thingee and redirect it to my own personal savegames folder. At the moment I'm not that motivated. I might give DosBox a try, though.

You don't need mouse look for an old 2.5D FPS. You don't even need a mouse. I only started using a mouse when FPS games became true 3D and looking around didn't warp and skew the screen. But for 2.5D shooters the keyboard is just fine. I'm a master at Duke3D on the keyboard. Dark Forces is even easier. The enemy AI isn't that smart so it's actually more fun without a mouse. It's just too easy with it.

Also, if you've got Jedi Academy, check out the Dark Forces MOD. It's unfinished and abandoned as of not very long ago (it was under construction for several years), but quite a large chunk of the game was remade and reimagined (and done very well) and the experience is quite spectacular. One must check it out.
  • edited February 2012
Hmm. I enjoy Jedi Academy. I guess I have to check that out.
  • edited February 2012
Hope you got it in time!

Today's Daily Deal is Call of Juarez: The Cartel. £6.79 / $16.99 (and yes, that IS right).
It's still not worth it, even at that price (especially in the US). Such a let-down of a game.

Also, only this weekend, in Spiral Knights: Get a free Dragon Wings accessory whenever you purchase an Energy Pack of 3,500 units. Only just caught that, sorry.
  • edited February 2012
Yeah, I got it while it was still on. Cartel? Is that the one that threw the storyline out the window? Screw it.
  • edited February 2012
Cartel is the one that's set in the modern day and changes the focus to a Co-Op at the expense of a decent single-player campaign. It's really, really bad, and I do not recommend it, even if you're a fan of the series.
  • edited February 2012
Yeah, that's what I thought. I played a demo of one of them. Seemed mediocre to me and the reviews of that one definitely didn't help win me over.

Academy at $2.50US was a steal though. I know others would argue for Dark Forces but as a person who isn't a fan of first person games, I can deal with the hybrid of Academy much easier and the graphics are pretty decent.
  • edited February 2012
Yeah, Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy are great fun. I'm a fan of the entire series, and each game definitely has its own positives and negatives, but Raven really knew how to make fun games. I'll miss them :(

Today's deal is The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom. It's $1.69 in US dollars and probably something else in other currencies. It's a GREAT little game and I highly recommend it.

    As do I.

    It's £1.35 and, as Dashing mentioned, $1.69.

And Steam did appear to be down for a bit, but it seems to be working fine now for me.
No idea what was going on there!

    Not working for me either.

Hmm, good to know it's not only me. It's disconnected a couple of times, but then got right back on. i hope it's just some minor technical errors and nothing major.

    Probably maintenance.
EDIT:I went to check steam forums and it was down as well, so who knows whats going on.

I'm sure we'll get a nice appology letter from Valve tommorow explaining everything.

It's been confirmed that it was a power outage. Sites are slowly being brought back online.

Really? You would think Valve would get steam up first but OK.
EDIT: Do achievements still work? I'm afraid to play Skyrim in case I get one and it doesn't register.

I'm not questioning you, I'm just saying it IS Valve's #1 source of income.

Maybe that takes the longest to get up and running and they're saving it for last so that they may get all the little things working first.

Edit: As of 4:56 P.M. Steam, has went back online for me. Open the Grape Juice!

    Today's Daily Deal is A Game of Thrones: Genesis. £7.49 / $9.99.

Anyone know if it's any good? I've not heard particularly great things.
  • edited February 2012
I haven't played it, but I've heard nothing but bad things about it. Another game that struggled with it's identity and didn't please any demographic of gamers.

It came out in September and is now on for 10 bucks....that's never a good sign.

Today's Daily Deal is Dinner Date. This is an odd one, and I wouldn't really classify it as a game. It's more of an indie-style exercise than anything else. That said, it is only £1.74 / $2.49, so it's worth a look if nothing else.

This week's Midweek Madness is Killing Floor. In celebration of selling [Doctor Evil voice] ONE MILLION COPIES, it's 85% off at £2.24 / $2.99. If you don't already own it, then it's a great game at an amazing price. Get it.

Also worth mentioning is that the GTA3 trilogy (GTA3, Vice City and San Andreas) are all 25% off thanks to the fact that they're all now Mac-compatible. If you don't already own them, they'll probably be cheaper later on, but it's worth mentioning nonetheless.

    Okay. Dinner Date.

Do you have a friend that is stuck in a horrible relationship and he will not shut up about it all evening until both of you are depressed? Well in this game you are that friend. Well the subcontious of that friend. And he will talk and talk and talk and...
If you can take this for longer than 15 minutes at a time you are a true hero.

What is the game about then? Passing time waiting for someone on a table. Being bored, start eating bread, try some wine and babble on about how you life just sucks. While he does that you can somewhat control him. The direction he is looking in, what his hands do, will he drink the wine? Eat the bread? The soup even? Noooo not the soup! It's all just so exciting!

the worst thing: the game takes your mouse hostage. You can Alt+Tab but you cannot move your mose to restart a download or tunrn off iTunes etc. There is only a master volume option. The symbols are so small that you have to use trial & error to learn what which letter on the keyboard does. I must stop now. This was aweful!

tl;dr: Don't dare to touch this with a ten foot pole. Avoid at all cost.

    Edit: that felt surprisingly good.
  • edited February 2012
I just never touch that game because the premise sounds a bit pretentious.

Thanks for that, Ketzer. You just saved me £1.74. If you were standing next to me, I'd buy you a pint with that.

Last time I was in the south of England was Abingdon a few years ago, it was a solid £3.50 for a pint then. It's around £3 here as well, it's enough to drive a man to bottled beer.

Buy me a water. I have no interest in alcohol. That's one of the things I hate about that game. You have to drink wine & smoke cigarettes to continue the "epic" tale of Mr. Luxemburg. But honestly he's just Jake from Twilight waiting for a date with bella. But she is in a restaurant with Edward right now.
