I'm American, and my last German beer was... ummm... Oktoberfest! Of course, there have been beers from other nations since then. Never accuse me of isolationism!
I wonder what would happen if the budget would go crazy like many millions more and how they would react and invest the money. The obvious next steps probably would be offering more voices for different languages. Some mentioned releasing the sources which i personally would find very interesting. I also could imagine them making the game bigger, maybe sinking money in consoles. And then?
Somehow i can't imagine Double Fine working on a adventure game for the next three years. Would they go episodic? Buy some LucasArts licences? Offer a couple of different games in parallel? Having a dinners with people around the globe? Talking to the community and saying "Look we're kind of sorry but that's too much money, really! Please can we give some back? Building the Double Fine Ranch, in space, projecting the Double Fine Logo on the moon (no, not the dark side), each day of a month the pledge came in? Normally i'm in no way into merchandising but i would love to have one of these two headed creatures.
So, if anyone knows a cool multimillionaire, give him/her a call!
And so far the average pledge is about $33.85. Come on people, increase them if you can.
Earlier in the drive it was like $38 average. The pledges are getting smaller as time goes on, which is to be expected, but continuing to come in at a pretty steady rate. $2.5 million is looking like a pretty safe bet at this point.
Of course, you gotta take out $250,000 or so for the documentary, and another $250,000 for fees from Amazon and Kickstarter, but that still leaves them with a budget pretty comparable to Stacking, Costume Quest, and Iron Brigade, which is not bad for an adventure game.
A few years back, Ron Gilbert wrote an article about what it would cost to develop a state-of-the-art 2D adventure game with an experience staff, and concluded it would be about a million dollars. Of course that means probably about 1.5 for a studio like Double Fine based in SF, and his estimate for voice acting is probably a bit beneath what Double Fine would do, but it still paints a pretty promising picture.
Beyond that budget, I think rather than dubs, we'd see an increased animation budget for cut scenes, that kind of thing.
I'd say 3.5 million+ is by no means an extreme guess. A few bursts of news coverage, some more updates, and the usual end-of-funding boost? If this followed the usual curve for Kickstarter funding(10% of total funding in the first 24 hours), we'd end up with 7 million.
I've pledged my bit.
I only discovered this today as I have been replaying my back catalogue of games(all adventure) to see how many work on my new laptop.
I've only just come up for air and nearly convulsed upon reading about doublefine,Tim and the the next grand adventure.
I haven't been this excited since the announcement of tomi!
Woo!hoo!:D
I'd love it if they gave us a game with different ways to solve the puzzles that accumulate to a different ending (or maybe even different puzzles?). That would be fantastic.

The "different ways of solving puzzles" thing was done in Stacking. It was pretty interesting there. Didn't affect the story to my knowledge, though.

I was thinking in a way that wouldn't be like a "moral choice" system but more like the more difficult a way you find to solve a puzzle, the better an ending you get. So if you take the easy way out, that reflects back on you later, maybe with a different puzzle that has a more black and white sort of outcome. Or something. I dunno.
Wow. I just saw a quick feature on this on my local City TV station mentioning Double Fine's valiant kickstart effort. It showed quite a bit of footage from Curse of Monkey Island (and even named it out loud) as an example of what type of game it would be. Specifically "...an old school point and click adventure game similar to the original Monkey Island". All this after news of some random military shooter. I have never seen an ad for an adventure game on TV in my natural life. Ever.
The suggestion for multiple ways of solving the game is good but i was thinking of a lot more money.
I stay with my estimation and if i was wrong even better! :O) But chances exist that getting over 3 millions might be possible.
I hope and also expect that Tim will be clever enough to implement his idea of the game and not what some of the community want because otherwise this will end up in a mess. There are quite a number of stupid suggestions in the comments and i think it's one of these things were you better just ignore things around you a bit.
And therefore, no, i don't want Dominic Armato as a voice actor as i don't want a Monkey Island game, no, i also don't want certain characters from any other games to show up, ... and as much as i love Grim Fandango for the writing the characters and the mood, i also want something new in the first place. Maybe a Grim Fandango inspired game in space! ;O) Seriously make something new in the first place. Personally i would prefer if this game would be less DOTT and more Grim inspired because of the type of humour and the more grown up appeal. I'm just not a kid/teenager anymore.
Game directors should always follow their own visions, and not cowtow to the the demands of the masses. Generic products might be enjoyable, but often are only limited in their long lasting impression.
People you can trust, having the right ideas and inspire you, were of help already, giving honest critics, sharing similarities on what's important to you, ... just like in any other aspect of your life. You can sense what everyone says but you need to rate it properly.

Sorry, but that is a -terrible- graph because it shrinks down the funding over the period and makes it look like it has been pretty constant, when actually it really hasn't, at all:
* It hovered around 70-80k per 24 hours for a few days after the initial burst of activity. But then one day they only made 40k in a day.
* By the end of that 40k day, it had actually slowed down so much that they were on track for only making 20k the next day. You can see this dip on the graph, but it's so small when the graph is zoomed out like that that it just looks like a minor blip, when in fact it was a major trend over a couple of days. You can see it more clearly on the first graph, it's a curve which is -really- flattening out and only gets rescued by the update, which leads me to...
* The only thing that stopped that trend from continuing was the video update that Tim posted, which netted them about 100k in a single day, which more than compensated for the slowing down on the previous days
* But it's slowed down considerably since then, and right now it looks like we're back to around a rate of 30-40k per day.
* As yet there's no reason to suppose that future updates will provide as much of a boost as this one did: after all, this one talked about DRM, translations and all sorts of things people were asking about, and it seems likely it'll be diminishing returns for that sort of thing. And really, how many updates can there be, it seems that to get it to 3.5 million they'd have to update every few days, and each update would have to be as successful as the first one in boosting pledges.
In other words, 3.5 million really is quite an outlandish prediction. Thanks to the updates, it's plausible they might hit 2.5 million with some updates and an end-of-campaign boost, but we really shouldn't be expecting much past that. New reward tiers will definitely help, too. Not that 2 million isn't already awesome, but the graph just doesn't say what it looks like it says.

The specific content of the updates kind of isn't that important. Every time they do something to get back in the news, it's going to put more eyes on the project and bring in more backers who hadn't seen it yet.
I agree 3.5 million is not a smart or scientific prediction, but I do think that Double Fine has the power to ride this one farther than it looks to be going at the current rate just by talking more about what the money they've raised has meant and what more money could mean.
Quite some were waiting for some information on aspects they care about and where they wanted to know Tim's thoughts and decisions, like for instance DRM and the supported release platforms. This was quite content related. Of course he can increase the pledge rate from time to time by certain actions like a new video about how things are going, new pledge offers and such things but people know when they want some entertainment and when they want some facts.
Somehow this discussion reminds me of lala. Tell you a secret, sometimes when playing Badminton and i'm in the mood it confuses my opponent when i'm singing it. Always good for a laugh and a few points on top. ;O)

YOU DARE TO SAY SOMETHlNG THE ALMlGHTY DASHING SAlD lS TERRlBLE!?
At the last weekend the rate also was lower compared to the other days, so it should increase on monday again, and hitting the 2 millions, but another update for sure would help as well. Next important aspect could be to assure people that the additional money will be spent on the game in terms of length&quality and not getting Kyrgyz as another language, porting to WebOS or composing a soundtrack for the documentary.
In essence many backers want a long quality point&click adventure.

You don't speak Kyrgyz, how can you claim to know what a Kyrgyzian wants?
Russia is a rich country, they have lots of ressources like oil, gas, nuclear bombs and the Tetris licence.
Nahhh. Sorry. That's over.
In 2005, Electronic Arts Company bought the rights to Tetris for $137m. Pazhitnov did not receive any royalties for his invention until 1996, although the game was selling millions of copies.
(oh just ignore the alt/troll)...boy, I'm sure excited for this game. I don't care how simple it looks, Tim back in the adventure game, ...is just awesome!

Btw. this one is tasty. I'm allowed to drink beer, i'm Bavarian. :O)

Episodic? Christmas Special DLC? Get the original game out on the planned schedule, and then use what's left-over to put out some additional content.
EDIT: Now I feel stupid for not reading Tamuel closely enough. I didn't realize how tired I am today.
