You guys remember when Vainamoinen showed off what the forums looked like for us mods?
    Do tell!

Here's what we had to put into place just so we could actually look at the forums.

Again yeah it really is getting worst with these spambots. They didn't even stay in the General Fourms this time. They spamed JP hints and Shopping support fourms.

I just hope they don't start spaming the S&M & Monkey Island fourms. The last thing we need is those getting spamed and moved into the Classics sub thread.
  • edited September 2012
If TTG decides to move those into The Classics, it won't be because of the spam. And they do get hit with spam every once in a while, just not as often.

If nothing happens with new Lucasarts president and TTG then they proboly will be be put in classics.

By the way Guru, Was this the worst spam attack yet?

It's really hard to judge, especially during attacks when more than one mod is on to deal with it, but I'd say not really. The last couple weeks, there's been several bots going, spamming about streaming multiple NFL games. This week, it really only seemed to be the one game they were spamming. I actually expected an attack today, and it was a lot more mild than I anticipated.

Users are more alert, and we're stopping spambots earlier than some months before. In July there was an incident where a single bot spammed 12 threads before it was caught and I recall one spamming 18 some months earlier; that didn't happen these days. The threat potential might be the same, but it feels better because our reaction time increased. The earlier they are killed, the less threads individual bots excrete on our discussion board.

I'm sure by now every mod has completely internalized the spambot kill routine (click e-mail link - assess if other mod has already reacted - mark spam message - click checkboxes to delete all messages by that user and all other users with the same ip address - validate eternal ban for these users - execute). As you can see, I have ceased giving an explicit reason for the deletion. I think it's rather obvious, at least when I moved the threads into the Official Secret Spam Forum (TM), Mike's farewell gift to the moderators.

What's really too bad about the whole thing is that with this volume of spam threads, all of the mods have given up on giving fun reasons for deletion, like "spamerrific", "spamalamadingdong", "stomping on capitalism", and "canned spiced ham". I know I haven't been bothering with that sort of thing with as many spambots as I usually ban in a day.

I feel the same about reporting reasons.

I noticed. The only time I ever had a problem with it was when you posted a Youtube link, so as long as Gmail was still grouping reported posts into that conversation, it had an embedded Youtube video at the bottom of the screen.

Yh I'm sorry about that I wont put any links in report anymore.

The spambots are hitting the fourms harder and harder now. They almost got the full BTTF fourms, The full TWD Fourms and the general chat.
  • edited September 2012
Yeah, they seem to be hitting more ferociously for Monday Night Football than they did for all the Sunday games yesterday.

I'm gonna use a Nostalgia Critic joke to answer my question.

You guys remember that screenshot I posted yesterday, when the spam forum contained 559 threads? We're at 610 today. That's 51 spambot threads in the last 25 1/2 hours.

731 right now. Do the math for the last 33 hours 13 minutes. Houston, we have a problem.

I do know Monfada posted 23 threads about Manchester United in the span of 20 minutes.

We can't really be around ALL the time. 60+ threads in less than half an hour, that IS threatening.
  • edited September 2012
What do the owners of these bots hope to accomplish by this? Surely, no one actually clicks on links in spambot threads...

Even if only a few people click a link it might be worth it. It's called bot for a reason.

Can you implement a 5 minuite wait time between creating threads? It's possible to set a wait time for posts but that mostly annoys normal users. 2 threads per minute really add up as we could see a few minutes ago.

Agreed plus it would help out mods since it would stop Bots from making so many threads.

We can't make that change, but we can recommend that an admin does.

Hey Guru did that bot make over 35 threads?
