and it's telltale who decided to do serious drama instead of cartoon comedy, so it is them who raised the bar for scrutiny of there product.
Methinks that theory needs a makeover. May I?
I would assume that the more mature theme of TWD does not necessarily result in "more scrutiny". TWD is just the most mainstream of Telltale's franchises to date. With it, people enter the forum who are modern gamers, used primarily to multi-million dollar games which have been in production for years and years. All the EAs, Activision Blizzards, Rockstars and Sonys. They have a really hard time grasping how small Telltale still is (for example, I recently encountered the thought that CD Project would be smaller than Telltale). These people don't think they get their money's worth, while in fact they do, and they overestimate Telltale's possibilities by more than a margin.
Imagine a different scenario: that instead of the adventure game fan base, Telltale had addressed a more mature audience with their early franchises. Some less popular adult comic for example. Then after six years, they acquire, say, a more popular cartoon license (the Simpsons or something like that). I think the effect would be pretty much the same.
who are these mythical perfect telltale fan base anyway?
In the sense that you might mean it here, they do not exist. And that is a very important thing to grasp. Every community member complained about something at some point. Had her or his quarrels with some game's controls, graphic style, re-used character models, ending, missing translations, whatever. But I can not think of an instance where a Wallace & Gromit blog post was violated by an angry mob of "I don't care, where's the next Monkey Island episode?".
i judge a game like sam and max (cartoon comedy) differently to a game like the walking dead (serious drama) but i would give equal criticism to a game made by Bioware or Telltale i don't think who made a product has anything to do with how i consume it but the genre does.
if someone in sam and max (a carton character) didn't know how to use batteries it wouldn't have had as big a reaction as when a character who is supposed to be a real person like in the walking dead (carley) didn't know how to use them.
and that's what i mean by more scrutiny, because it is set in a realistic world you expect realistic things to happen, like how i thought it was stupid to use our weapon to hold open a door and not the paint cans outside where as if lee was a talking dog i would have cut him some slack and it wouldn't bother me as much, or how when lee shoves the cutting torch into the hands of Omid and it was meant to be funny it just came across as threatening however if guybrush threepwood had done the same thing with a jaunty tune playing in the background it would have been funny not threatening.
could it be summed up with: a mature game, for mature people, is also played by the immature ?
people who are used to big names, big bucks and big buzzwords and if a game has none of them or one or two (but actually does have all three but they don't know that cos they are too young/sheltered/ lack gumption to research, they dismiss ttg and their efforts cos it isn't mainstream ?
If this thread and the moderator comments are indicative of the TTG fanbase, then I assume the TTG fanbase is arrogant and elitist as the "more mature" gamers.
All game forums have this outrage when things are done that the paying customers aren't happy about. How is it surprising that when people pay $25 up front and are promised a monthly delivery and that promise is broken that people are outraged?

Because personally, I've found that I never cared about a monthly delivery in the first place. I was paying $25 for the game, not for the delivery system, and I suspect most people purchased the game because of the words "Telltale" or "Walking Dead", not "monthly."
It was never a dealbreaker for me, which is why the outrage consistently surprises me. I really don't get it. It's obvious that the company ran into some stuff, bugs or licensing issues maybe, that delayed the game's release, they've posted about it, we shouldn't have to be privy to all of it and it is what it is. I think the people asking for refunds because it wasn't monthly are silly. Sorry if that sounds elitist, but I grow increasingly weary of reading these sorts of posts.

I agree that in drama, the narrative is more under scrutiny than in cartoon worlds. We haven't yet touched on the actual game story here - in fact, I didn't consider this to be even on the agenda of the people we were primarily talking about.

So basically you have a hard time when it comes to understand that some people might get angry/voice their opinions when they pay for something and for whatever reason it takes one extra month to get finished/delivered to you.
I mean i can totally understand them, however there are better ways to do it rather than just writing a rage post at some forums.
And its nothing against the franchise nor telltale, that would happen with any product i buy and takes that long to get done.
Not understarding that is just as stupid as comforming with constant delayed products/not voicing what you are thinking or spamming "i want my money back threads" lol
But at the end of the day you can sleep good, when you know that people do that because of 3 reasons.
1. we are impatient angry teenagers
2. we love the game
3. we just want more of it
And telltales done an awesome work at making us, care this much for a game/story.
I agree that in drama, the narrative is more under scrutiny than in cartoon worlds. We haven't yet touched on the actual game story here - in fact, I didn't consider this to be even on the agenda of the people we were primarily talking about.
i guess your right i just thought it this thread was about more than people being impatient about release dates, but because i know about the history of telltale episodic games and had just accepted that buying it before it was finished was gonna be self inflicted punishment so i only consider late releases a minor thing, but as a new person on these forums i saw this thread as aimed at me or at least my general direction and i have had many complaints including release dates, which is a valid complaint, even if there is nothing that can be done about it

This is the kind of crappy attitude that makes me question how "great and awesome" telltale's true fanbase is.
I don't think my post was in anyway a rage post. It amazes me that if a company says "you'll get a release monthly" and it is double that time frame that people think other people will just be "oh sure that's fine no big deal, even though I've paid you for a product that you are not delivering on"
And to me the save game issue is much bigger, and I would be outraged and asking for a refund had I lost those.
I was pretty shocked that the moderator would say they expect everyone to be in a calm manner. Have you guys been around people much? In any business I know of people do not act calmly when a product or service doesn't deliver on what is promised.
(I do agree with the OP that this shit shouldn't spill over to other games forums.)
I was pretty shocked that the moderator would say they expect everyone to be in a calm manner.
I said I, personally, as someone who does not work for Telltale at all, would expect people to be calmer about a simple delay. What do you mean by "they"?
This is the kind of crappy attitude that makes me question how "great and awesome" telltale's true fanbase is.
Do me a favor and check your personal judgments at the door, chief. Just because I hold a certain belief about something doesn't mean I have a crappy attitude -- it means that I'm more accepting of delays than other people may be. I can say that I probably won't lose any sleep over your assessment that a company's fanbase isn't nearly as great or awesome as you once believed.

This is a $25 video game, not a kidney that I'm desperately waiting for. I have more important things to "rage" over than this.
Agreed with the OP, no need to repeat it. At first, I was fairly impatient for episode 2, but then I found that NOT coming back every day and doing other things really helped. I expressed my opinion on the unprofessional way TT handled their release dates, but after thinking about it for a while I realized they are doing the best they can. It's not their fault Microsoft and Sony are the worst companies ever!
I have a lot of respect for TellTale for a lot of reasons. I do not take part in other parts of the TT community, but I am a huge fan of their games and own all of them. (Yes, even Jurassic park- I actually liked it.)
Well let's be honest, if they didn't have the "Released once a month" up on the steam page (They removed it, it was up there) there wouldn't have been this much anger. While there are some screaming children many people would be disappointed in the fact that it has taken telltale twice as long to release one episode on some accounts.
If being told something before you purchase it, and thinking that is what you were going to get makes me entitled; well I'm sorry. Welcome to the world after 1960s. If someone says something, especially in writing, you are meant to believe it. This business mindset has been around...since businesses had rules and laws to follow. While I don't condone the people taking their money out with the 'no questions asked' credit cards, or getting foaming at the mouth upset after Telltale misses every release date they give for TWD. It is perfectly reasonable for people on the forums to be "Huff, well ****" and seriously consider not buying another telltale game or wait until all the episodes are released. That is just business and is the same model for everything that has ever been created, produced, manufactured, or even a simple service.

The problem just is that the earlier community was more patient and even thankful that Telltale makes these kind of games, there always were complains and discussions, but it was way more harmony in the forums and therefore also a way better platform to discuss your thoughts. It sounds like an argument against TWD fans but I don't mean it that way, it just seems to be the popularity that attract all kinds of people. Some just miss the good old forum days even if they won't come back too soon. We will see when Telltale makes another MI (hopefully Lucas Arts will allow it again someday) or S&M.
At the end of the day, if you are a TTG fanboy, then you need every TWD fan you can get from the best to the worst. You want TTG to make as much money as possible to produce more games.
So I don't really get the condescending attitude to those that aren't happy about paying for something that isn't delivered on time or those that are losing their entire saves/playtime.
if you ignore the release dates thread there isn't much moaning at all, and although having patients is good, having patients doesn't mean you should be happy about waiting an indefinite amount of time for something you should as advertised of had months ago,
and calling people entitled for wanting what they paid for just makes the people that say it sound like idiot children who have just heard a big word and like using it all the time but don't know what it means
At the end of the day, if you are a TTG fanboy, then you need every TWD fan you can get from the best to the worst... So I don't really get the condescending attitude to those that aren't happy...
Because "fanboy" is in no way condescending.
Where did I put those jumper cables? Open wide and say "ahhhh", K?!
What a fantastic community stating they want to shoot me in the face! Gosh, I will be so sorry to miss out on this wonderful telltale community.
But I'm glad some people get it. The concept isn't hard. If something is promised and not delivered some people are actually annoyed by it. Myself, I enjoy the game but will be hesitant to buy future TTG products, especially if I can wait until they are all actually released and get a discount rather than be disappointed by countless delays and false advertising.
alex, we're waiting on ep4 it's been a couple of months since the release schedule was changed this subject was 'raping' a dead horse with numerous sticks inbetween ep1 and ep2 and made a small comeback after ep2 but since ep3 it's been like church mouse quiet and most people have moved on from it, accepted it and then YOU show up
What a fantastic community stating they want to shoot me in the face! Gosh, I will be so sorry to miss out on this wonderful telltale community.
Milo calls himself "superspesh" [snip] and Sir Milo of Smeg. I mean...
Look, I agree violence is totally inappropriate response, even joking, and that's something that reflects on Cyreen, Milo and the mods that allow it: it's not a serious threat but childish and offensive, especially to victims of violence.
That said, the individuals don't represent the community. It's a fallacy to think so. Don't let the poor choices of the few reflect on the many.
EDIT: I thought "superspesh" meant what was snipped out. I wasn't trying to be insulting.
The fanboy argumentation wasn't as inherently popular as you hoped, eh?
Didn't realize people would be so thin-skinned as to take offense to it. Fanatic, fan-boy, doesn't really change the point... you love TTG then you want every fan possible (even if it does shit up the community) so that TTG makes more money and makes more games. Unless talking on a forum is more important than the games themselves.
I don't think that the games are actually delayed by months, just a couple of weeks. Like Ep 4 is due out in October, right? That means that TTG has 'til October 31 to get it out. From past performances, I expect to get the game closer to November 10-15. That's only a week or two (-/+ a couple of days). I wonder if anyone would still be complaining if TTG said "It'll be out Oct. 31" and it was released November 3? A few days don't matter overall. We pre-ordered the entire season + the big pack of games. I'm not mad about a few days' delay.
Too, I hope that it's a minority of people that are "shitting up the fanbase". I had never heard about TTG until they started advertising for TWD game. But I've been pleased with their other games as well as the community surrounding them. :P

when i bought the game on July 6 it was advertised as monthly releases, two episodes were already out, so by that schedule which i purchased the game on, i should just have or be only waiting a short time for episode 5, so episode 4 was due September not October
The rage seems to be centered on people with little patience for anything and nothing to do but sit on the forums or wait for the game. I know it will come out and they seem to be fairly consistent with every other month. I also learned that they are a small company that is not rich and doesn't have the power that a AAA title company does. If the game was canceled it would be different but at the moment I think the rage is unfounded and people should occupy themselves with something.
If it's any consolation, I don't do that myself.I am new and only interested in The Walking Dead, but I don't do that. The only thing that annoys me are the release dates. I actually thought they had already fully made the game, it's obivous they are making it episode by episode. So I can understand why some people are doing what you are complaining about. At the same time I agree that it's not acceptable.
What a fantastic community stating they want to shoot me in the face! Gosh, I will be so sorry to miss out on this wonderful telltale community.
Considering my first experience with you was you telling me that I had an attitude problem because I said something that you didn't completely agree with, I really won't miss you too much, either. Let's not pretend that you wandered onto the forums, posted something totally innocent and were attacked, and let's also not pretend that any of those death threats -- though not cool -- were serious.
But I'm glad some people get it. The concept isn't hard. If something is promised and not delivered some people are actually annoyed by it. I take this message as an implication that Telltale intentionally misled consumers to believe this was a monthly release. Anyone with any experience with Telltale knows that they're not that sort of company. If they said they had planned to do monthly releases, I take that to mean that was their initial plan and that life -- unanticipated bugs, executive decisions, things that are completely beyond the designers' control -- got in the way of that. I'll be the first to admit that TT's communication skills, though improving, are pretty poor, but repeatedly bringing up that the game is taking longer than it was initially advertised accomplishes exactly nothing, and the claims of "false advertising" and "Telltale misled me" are borderline hysterical.
