I'd say kill it with fire, but then again I don't think that'd be a viable solution.

    OK.

Is this tablet worth getting? (£55 is around $77)

It's just for general use - nothing too heavy, except possibly some games - so would it be worth picking up? I know it's not going to be the greatest tablet in the world, but the one I've got REALLY isn't very good and this seems... well, it seems OK. Ish.

    Thoughts?

Maybe he should try turning it off and on again. That usually works.

Ah, but didn't the tablet you got look ok-ish? Personally I think you get what you pay for with tablets. The specs on that tablet look suspiciously good so I suspect it won't last long.

In related news, I'm going to attempt to re-install the stock firmware on my tablet, after I discovered that the custom ROM i'm using doesn't support external HDD's. Now as I wiped the stock ROM from my tablet and the back-up was corrupted I'm using a round about method that will hopefully work. If not. I'm going to be stuck with an oversized coaster.

I didn't really look at the specs all that much. I just saw a cheap tablet and thought "mine!". Regretting it now though - there's several dead pixels and the damn thing's hopeless when connecting to the net.

Shipping that one I mentioned would be £6. So much for that. If it had been free postage, I'd have impulse bought it. Now since it's £62 instead of £56, I'm having second thoughts.

    Well done, SVP. Well. Done.

EDIT: Looking around elsewhere on the net, it still seems a good price for that specific model. Here's the same one on eBay, for example, and that one's refurbished.

EDIT 2: Browsing eBay, I'm seeing a couple of others that are catching my eye. This one, for example. God, I know nothing about this. Someone, please - help?

Turns out the IRS's system has been screwy this summer and I didn't actually owe 600 dollars. The only amount I actually owed was 5 dollars I overlooked in interest. Phew.

I was seriously going to cry if I had to pay that much.

IN OTHER NEWS!! I bought a nakiri knife and a whetstone! It was a cheaper one though. I'm hoping to buy a higher quality one by christmas, but this one is great in the meanwhile!

6 weeks until I move to London. I'll be happy there as long as I do not have to do any decorating as that's all I've been doing for the past three weeks, though it feels like longer.

Clearly what happened is the IRS had a bug in its Knife Tax calculation system.

I work for a company that also makes tablets. I don't work in that department, but it means I can't offer specific advice without posting an annoying full disclosure notice. So my fuzzy advice is to only buy the cheapest tablets if you're just interested in random web browsing, e-book reading, and simple games that don't take a lot of CPU. Or if you're taking it to places where it's likely to be stolen or damaged. Expect a not-so-great battery life. If you want better than that, pay for something better.

Honestly, yeah, that sounds like me. Simpsons: Tapped Out, Angry Birds, occasionally browse the net when I'm out... that's really all I use it for.

All I'm really after is someone to take a look at this one model and tell me if it's worth £62/$83ish. I'm thinking "pretty much", but I'd rather get someone confirm that for me before splashing out that much on something.

Capacitive touch-screen is always a go. For the rest, the specs look decent. Only real downside is no bluetooth, which means no easy transfer between devices, and no ability to connect an external controller to it for certain games.
  • edited August 2013
Someone reviewed it here, so have a look at what that person said. For me, the 800x480 resolution on a 9-inch tablet would be a dealbreaker. It's also got a pretty old version of Android on it. Other than that, it doesn't look too bad for the price. I bet the battery won't last 3 hours playing Angry Birds, though.

Do you think you'll still be going on the internet and hanging around video game forums when you are 80?

I'd like to think no (that I'd spend my time off the internet and enjoying life with what I will have left of my twilight years), but if I'm honest with myself... yeah I probably will be.

I thought the same when I was a teenager... but it's almost 20 years later, and things pretty much are still the same (well, I visit different video game sites now of course, considering Telltale wasn't around in 1995 :p).

It would be really cool if we did have a successor to the internet within the next 50 years, but I have a feeling the internet experience will keep being added to, rather than replaced.

Heck, my teenage self would be really surprised to see that we don't communicate through virtual reality or holodecks by now :p.

If the internet still exists by then, it will probably be so hopelessly regulated that I won't want anything to do with it and I'll go ahead and just ascend to a higher plane or something. Whatever the cool kids are doing.

Whatever the cool kids are doing.
Hopefully by that point it'll be virtual reality. I can't wait to play a round of Interstellar Bum Pirates.

(Cookie for the first one to tell me exactly where that's from)

Not entirely sure why I'm talking about this further, given the abject level of apathy I've encountered from you guys so far, but my Mario Kart Wii track collection has overcome the minor setback I had earlier in the week. Turns out certain tracks have to have certain elements in order to work in specific slots.

For example: 6.1 has to include an ice theme, while 6.2 has to have that pirate ship that fires bombs onto the track. If the courses in those slots don't have those things in them, then it won't load.

Once I realized that, I found that most of the replacement tracks that had those elements were rubbish.

Like, REALLY bad. So I've had to make the best of a bad situation and pick the least awful tracks I could, which means I have to change the theme for the cup from Ice to Water (since it's the only thing connecting the two tracks I kinda have to use).

Hey ho. I'll get there in the end.

Well, I would have loved to help you here, but I'm not an expert on tablets ... not the kind of tablets you're considering, that is.

The other kind of tablets on the other hand ... ;)

Anyway, after becoming incredibly excited because I found a sequel to "A goofy movie", I sat down and watched It today. It's just a crappy U.S. College movie. I hate those (on the whole. Monsters U was awesome.). I do not understand what Frat/Sorrority houses are. From what I gather they are the U.S equivalent of the Hogwarts houses. Am I far off? We don't have those over here.

I think I've read through that page before, and still don't really grasp it. Or at least what the appeal is, it all seems pretty daft to me.

Oh, and I attempted to sort my tablet out yesterday. Halfway through installing the original firmware, it hit an error message and aborted. Weirdly, it didn't cause my tablet to brick, and I see to be running some sort of hybrid version of Android. It's much faster than It was before, and I can now watch videos from my external HDD.

I tested it by watching the episode of Doctor who where the 12th doctor reunites with Amy Pond and travels back to Pompeii to team up with his 10th self and Donna to fight off Roman Gods.

Marsden's not far off with "sort of". Yes, there's a frat house or sorority house you can live in. Yes, there's a sort of group solidarity that comes with it. But while the organizations have to be approved by the school, they aren't run by it, and participation is optional.

I can't really speak as to any benefits of joining a Greek organization on campus, since my only contact with them was when my roommate was pledging in my freshman year. What I did see definitely confirmed the "meat head" mentality I've seen stereotyped, and on the first day of "hell week", when I wasn't supposed to see any of Calvin, he came back to our room, exhausted, asked me not to tell anyone he'd been there, and then passed the fuck out for a few hours in the middle of the day.

Needless to say, I didn't feel that this was something that was for me.

Sounds scary, and distinctly cult-like. I think I'll just stick to joining the Quidditch Society or something. I reckon I'd make a good seeker.

Do you have those sort of general interest societies over in the states? Like we have them for basically everything you can think of. I think I saw an Extreme Ironing Society in Cardiff...

Our local Ukrainian Catholic Church makes the best pierogi. I'm bummed that they won't be making more until the end of next month.

I told my mom I'd save her half a dozen when she comes back Monday morning from her trip upstate. But I'm finding it very hard to resist the temptation. And I still have two and a half days left.
