I can actually sympathise with the people wanting the localised version of the game, as I have waited over a year to get an English version of a game created in Germany (Simon the Sorcerer 4) but I think that was mainly due to finding a publisher for the English version - I've no idea how long it took to actually get the game fully localised but I'm certain that it was done after the game was completed and probably after it was released in Germany. That's one of the drawbacks of a small games company.

There's one thing almost nobody is considering.
If Telltale published the episodes localized from day 1, we would probably lose the chance of a foreign dubbing. I don't know if anyone from the Telltale team can confirm what I'm about to write, but I don't think Telltale has the budget to handle three or four foreign dubbings.
I really don't think that an Italian adventure game publisher would accept to distribute Wallace & Gromit, now that it's already available localized on the net. The same thing would happen to TOMI if it were already available with Italian subtitles.
I don't know about the Spanish market, but I can assure you that our Italian adventure games market is struggling... hard. These days, the wonderful Italian fully-voiced versions of Runaway 1 & 2 and Jack Keane are the exceptions to a known rule: "italian version = english voices + italian subtitles". This is sad, considering that the Italian versions of Monkey 3 & 4 were among the best localized games we've ever played.
I'm not saying that postponing the localized versions will automatically grant us an Italian dubbing, but at least this will give us a small chance, especially if Telltale contacted a blessed Spanish-Italian publisher called "FXPlanet".

Well actually, if I was seeing a foreign film I would rather see it in the native language with subtitles than with an English dub.
Not that I don't understand your complaint, but you don't need great voice-over work to make a great game (look at MI 1 and 2 and all the pre-voice Lucas-Art games; still the best in the genre). In a way it's like being able to appreciate a silent film.
Again, it's not TellTale's fault. If it wasn't for TellTale we wouldn't be getting a new MI game at all. They aren't ruining anything. It's unreasonable to call them out on this, or demand they higher more employees (especially in the current economic situation in the U.S.). There have been localizations for their other games in the past, so most likely localizations for other languages will come. You have to be patient. There a ton of big name franchises that people in the US have to wait for localizations for (namely games that come from Japan, but there are many many European developed adventure games that we wait months even years for). Episodic releases have a tight production schedule. There may well be localizations ready, or shortly after, the "complete" game is finished in 5 months.
Telltale is aware of their international fans and their concerns; they aren't ignoring you or purposefully spiting you. I have no doubt they are looking into better accommodating you by looking into the localization process.
First, let me praise any previous turingmachine604 post in this thread. You speak the truth. And, if they ever are to be translated, don't miss "Edna bricht aus" and "Book of Unwritten Tales" from German developers. Being adventure fans, Germans really don't have to complain about new releases in their own country.
They could have all the diaglouge stored in an XML file and then let the fans translate until it could be done officially!
Working in the translation business as I do, I really consider that a bad idea both from the marketing standpoint as well as from the foreseeable quality of that translation. Granted, a lot of so-called professional translations nowadays are just plain bad - I see those every day. Still, the effort, preparation and just plain knowledge of professional translation are an absolute prerequisite for this project. Fans would also love the text too much to move too far from it, resulting in a very english-sounding translation. Yet sometimes you have to literally butcher an originally English sentence to make a proper German or Italian one.
Same for me. I wouldn't want to watch/read it in my own language. Next to that, there are often a lot of languistic jokes in Monkey Island games that cannot be translated.
Yes, there are. A good translation tries to approximate the meaning of those or create new jokes. The German translation of "Monkey Island 2", for example, had a very self-conscious translator who would not refrain from creating totally different jokes if the original ones could not be translated. When Guybrush calls the LucasArts helpline on Dinky Island, Chester would even reply: "We're not responsible for all those silly jokes. Refer to the German translator, as none of the original jokes could be translated properly".
I am very happy that MI is continued after such a long time and I would also preorder it but I also would prefer a NON-ENGLISH-version (German) .
I know that these version cannot be published simutaneously but it's a pity that I cannot find any information on your webpage (in FAQ) if such versions are planed.

Die Fangemeinde in Deutschland ist rie-sen-groß, der Verkauf ist 100% gesichert in Deutschland, es wird sich also ohne Zweifel ein Publisher finden, der die Lokalisation übernimmt, und sei es dtp. Sorry, but in my opinion in this way telltale waste Monkey Island.
I agree that this is not a smart move from my point of view. A discrete number of people didn't preorder because of this. Moreover we're now facing ourself against the strong desire to play another MI adventure so we're all excited and everyone of us (or the most of us) can't wait for it. This kind of reaction is intended to change, decrease, as the time passes by.
If a localized version will ever born, it'll not happen before 5-8 months and, in this lapse of time, thing changes, people will think about Runway 3 (just to say that many of them will have other things in their mind), this forum will be full of people who'll praise TOMI while others will denigrate it; Walkthrough, hints, "did you try it?" stuffs, discussion threads, all things that will contribute, in a way or the other, to spoil the gameplay to those who didn't play it.
But this is normal in the internet age.

I don't wanna pay 1$ more than i've already payed. Can i tell you the truth? a good dubbing requires so much efforts that if you don't plan it right from the beginning, it is almost impossible to stay within the budget and obtain an acceptable dubbing (not a good one) as well.
TT sayd they didn't get a position 'till now, but i think that they can only imagine to localize suibtitles (if they ever will).
Personally, i prefer to forget about an italian version of tomi instead of having a poorly dubbed one.
Moreover, as already sayd, i don't wanna buy it another time! No one will! So TT has to keep in mind that just making the localized subtitles may have un unexpected raise of costs... and they can't get red of course! So they'll think about it twice!

Sound and voice 90% of the game? in an adventure game? maybe it's because i'm old gamer but, for me, both sound and graphics makes the 10% of the whole game while the other 90% is made of storyline, puzzles, longevity and usere interface!

I sold the italian versions of some of my games (ie broken sword 1 e 2) for the english ones just because they were poorly localized. i prefer a good english one to nothing. This does not mean that i agree with TT's line whose error, always from my point of view, was to not consider translations (not dubbing) right from the beginning. I think that this will affect TOMI overall sales. But which was their primary target? maybe it was not to make a best selling game...

I totally agree with you, really. perhaps i'm wrong but i'd like to say that we're a talking about a game translation (not dubbing). we're not talking about translation of the "European Laws For Misunderstanding European People" book and i really think that the fan community is able to make a good work if it is well coordinated. But, most important, it would have been made at cost zero and in time for the 7th of july.
Ok a professional translation is times better but i think that we can deal with it even if it's good at 70%.

Although I can understand written english, there are many words that in a fast dialog I cant understand. (i'm training with season 2 of sam and max NOT TRANSLATED TO SPANISH YET... How much time we'll have to wait for ToMI spanish version?)

I do not believe that the TTG does not have enough money to locate, at least in the subtitles, Tomi. Simply had not planned to do so, at the bottom is not so strange given that the Americans think they have the only language, but not limited to, the universe .. Yet in the time of internet and the "future" in which we live is plausible to expect a location for at least the subtitles between globalization and beta-tester etc. .. Could not be provided a location because of the presence of anecdotes related to local history and that no American could understand, but it does the same with "the simpson" that despite several anecdotes related to local events have a resounding success and every time you watch it captures something previously overlooked detail.
I add only that at this point maybe we should complain to the "Lucas arts" which gave a mandate to a house that maybe is not up to produce and distribute as Tomi deserves.

The link posted above to an apparent Italian translation is not something Telltale has any involvement with or knowledge of. There are currently no foreign language versions of Tales of Monkey Island in development.

English isn't my first language either, but I think that it's better to use the resources to make good game in one language and then have it localized later than do bad game in several languages and considering the look of the first gameplay demo it's going to be a great game. So I don't think that they are incompetent.

You'll just have to be patient then. It's likely that European retail version will be in Italian stores at some point or another.
And reasons, why games are usually published in one language to their main market area and then later localized to other market areas, are often related to time schedule and budget.
Waiting is nothing new, I remember that in the past you had to wait even years before some movie or game was available in Europe. These days you usually at least have alternatives and I'm happy that I get the game at the same day as the Americans.
Surely we have used to the contemporary world for the release of certain titles.
I do not think we can not leave a multilingual version, it's just that I want to know by TTG, if we did know for example that Tomi multilingual leaves in November, the problem would be solved peacefully and expect.
So leave multilanguages demo for i-phone because not for TOMI?

For me this game is a huge gift and I really wish the best for whole TTG and the staff, which I believe deserve nothing but positive feedback for making this come true. At least, untill we've played the game.
Obviously, if the market would be huge you would see translations really fast, but obviously it's not enough to make it profitable at the moment because then they would have done it.

Episodic gaming isn't really friendly with multi-language release.
Then again...I tend to have to wait months for NoA to port Zelda games into English myself. I don't think it's that awful it's not a multi-language release, I'm sure it'll be translated at some point.

It is a time for rejoicing in North America. The fourth installment of the monkey island series is in stores exclusively in north america today

I don't intend to cause more controversy but... the first PC game I ever played when I was a little over 7 years old was Monkey Island 2. LeChuck's Revenge.
Of course it was in English and, to make a long story short, it took me about a year (along with Indiana Jones The Fate of Atlantis) to finally beat both games. And how did that happen if I didn't speak any English at all? Well, my dad gave me the best present I could had ever asked for, an English to Spanish dictionary. So not only was it the best learning tool ever created but it actually worked.
I'm not saying that all of you should do the same thing, but that with a little bit of perseverance, all of you could actually learn English using this game. And if you just hate English or believe you should always get everything you pay for in your mother tongue, then just wait for guides/fan translations/official translations to arrive.
i'm a really Big Fan von MI, and have played all Parts very often.
I thought that a new Monkey Island after Part 4 will never become real.
So i'm very happy to see a new Monkey Island game and made a decision.
A German Version (with German Voice) will be great for me, but
i want to support the whole Project, so i Pre-Ordered the game a few minutes
ago. I know it's in English and English is not such a Problem for me, but if
you have played the Parts 3 and 4 with German Voice, so you want to play the new Parts also in German Voice. Maybe from the same Speaker Norman Matt.

My memory don't fail me
Not just few days, but almost two weeks later. Americans had already completed the game when we got our hands to it and I had to avoid spoilers. Still it was better as in the case of Curse, which was published in the USA in 1997 and in Europe in 1998.
Like, I said it wasn't unusual to wait several months that some adventure game was finally launched in Europe, not even in the case of LucasArts. Still, we waited patiently and even today I'm waiting that couple of adventure games will be translated* and published around here.
So, I'm wondering how your situation is so unusual, compared to situation we others have, that it justifies vilification campaign against TellTale Games and "Tales of Monkey Island"?
*We probably just get the English version with Finnish box and possibly Finnish manual. You probably will get at least subtitles or full voice overs of those same titles. So you are in better position than I am.

There have been localizations for their other games in the past, so most likely localizations for other languages will come. You have to be patient. There a ton of big name franchises that people in the US have to wait for localizations for (namely games that come from Japan, but there are many many European developed adventure games that we wait months even years for). Episodic releases have a tight production schedule. There may well be localizations ready, or shortly after, the "complete" game is finished in 5 months.
Telltale is aware of their international fans and their concerns; they aren't ignoring you or purposefully spiting you. I have no doubt they are looking into better accommodating you by looking into the localization process.
Working in the translation business as I do, I really consider that a bad idea both from the marketing standpoint as well as from the foreseeable quality of that translation. Granted, a lot of so-called professional translations nowadays are just plain bad - I see those every day. Still, the effort, preparation and just plain knowledge of professional translation are an absolute prerequisite for this project. Fans would also love the text too much to move too far from it, resulting in a very english-sounding translation. Yet sometimes you have to literally butcher an originally English sentence to make a proper German or Italian one.
Yes, there are. A good translation tries to approximate the meaning of those or create new jokes. The German translation of "Monkey Island 2", for example, had a very self-conscious translator who would not refrain from creating totally different jokes if the original ones could not be translated. When Guybrush calls the LucasArts helpline on Dinky Island, Chester would even reply: "We're not responsible for all those silly jokes. Refer to the German translator, as none of the original jokes could be translated properly".

I agree that this is not a smart move from my point of view. A discrete number of people didn't preorder because of this. Moreover we're now facing ourself against the strong desire to play another MI adventure so we're all excited and everyone of us (or the most of us) can't wait for it. This kind of reaction is intended to change, decrease, as the time passes by.
If a localized version will ever born, it'll not happen before 5-8 months and, in this lapse of time, thing changes, people will think about Runway 3 (just to say that many of them will have other things in their mind), this forum will be full of people who'll praise TOMI while others will denigrate it; Walkthrough, hints, "did you try it?" stuffs, discussion threads, all things that will contribute, in a way or the other, to spoil the gameplay to those who didn't play it.
But this is normal in the internet age.
I don't wanna pay 1$ more than i've already payed. Can i tell you the truth? a good dubbing requires so much efforts that if you don't plan it right from the beginning, it is almost impossible to stay within the budget and obtain an acceptable dubbing (not a good one) as well.
TT sayd they didn't get a position 'till now, but i think that they can only imagine to localize suibtitles (if they ever will).
Personally, i prefer to forget about an italian version of tomi instead of having a poorly dubbed one.
Moreover, as already sayd, i don't wanna buy it another time! No one will! So TT has to keep in mind that just making the localized subtitles may have un unexpected raise of costs... and they can't get red of course! So they'll think about it twice!
Sound and voice 90% of the game? in an adventure game? maybe it's because i'm old gamer but, for me, both sound and graphics makes the 10% of the whole game while the other 90% is made of storyline, puzzles, longevity and usere interface!

I sold the italian versions of some of my games (ie broken sword 1 e 2) for the english ones just because they were poorly localized. i prefer a good english one to nothing. This does not mean that i agree with TT's line whose error, always from my point of view, was to not consider translations (not dubbing) right from the beginning. I think that this will affect TOMI overall sales. But which was their primary target? maybe it was not to make a best selling game...
I totally agree with you, really. perhaps i'm wrong but i'd like to say that we're a talking about a game translation (not dubbing). we're not talking about translation of the "European Laws For Misunderstanding European People" book and i really think that the fan community is able to make a good work if it is well coordinated. But, most important, it would have been made at cost zero and in time for the 7th of july.
Ok a professional translation is times better but i think that we can deal with it even if it's good at 70%.

Although I can understand written english, there are many words that in a fast dialog I cant understand. (i'm training with season 2 of sam and max NOT TRANSLATED TO SPANISH YET... How much time we'll have to wait for ToMI spanish version?)

The link posted above to an apparent Italian translation is not something Telltale has any involvement with or knowledge of. There are currently no foreign language versions of Tales of Monkey Island in development.

English isn't my first language either, but I think that it's better to use the resources to make good game in one language and then have it localized later than do bad game in several languages and considering the look of the first gameplay demo it's going to be a great game. So I don't think that they are incompetent.
I have difficulties to understand why there is so much hostility and claims that Americans are arrogant when they don't provide translations to other languages. Most games are made to one market first and then translated to other languages, for example Simon the Sorceror 5 is currently available only in German and many console games are often published earlier in Japan than in the USA or Europe. TellTale is no different than majority of the gaming industry.
It's matter of preference in which language you like to play (unless you don't really know any English at all), but most who have complained here about the lack of translations seem to write good enough English, so they should be able to understand the game at least with the English subtitles. So most of you can make a choice between waiting for the localized version or getting the game now, it's up to you.

I speak a very little engish, believe me. I could not enjoy the game if this isn't translate in my language. And now i'm helping with the online translators to write in this forum, and i write beacuse Monkey Island is the best game that was never created, in my opinion. And i can't understand why they not
waited to announce the release that the game was ready for a simultaneous launch worldwide in multilanguage (also only the subtitles, if there are problems of money for the translate of the voices). We have waited long for a Monkey Island (and i had lost hope), we could wait no problems...

You'll just have to be patient then. It's likely that European retail version will be in Italian stores at some point or another.
And reasons, why games are usually published in one language to their main market area and then later localized to other market areas, are often related to time schedule and budget.
Waiting is nothing new, I remember that in the past you had to wait even years before some movie or game was available in Europe. These days you usually at least have alternatives and I'm happy that I get the game at the same day as the Americans.
I do not think we can not leave a multilingual version, it's just that I want to know by TTG, if we did know for example that Tomi multilingual leaves in November, the problem would be solved peacefully and expect.
So leave multilanguages demo for i-phone because not for TOMI?

Your memory fails you. Escape was published (at least around here) few weeks later than in North America and in case of Curse the time gap between North American and European releases was several months.
I react very strongly against attempts at emotional blackmail, like how you worded your story about running to the shelves and then ending with "But this kind of thing will not happen again because of Telltale...". I think that's rotten. I also think it's rotten when you start threatening and demanding stuff like a whining pessimist. So it's not all non-english speaking posters, but the few people resorting to these tactics- coincidently (lol) they were all italian/spanish.
For me this game is a huge gift and I really wish the best for whole TTG and the staff, which I believe deserve nothing but positive feedback for making this come true. At least, untill we've played the game.
Obviously, if the market would be huge you would see translations really fast, but obviously it's not enough to make it profitable at the moment because then they would have done it.

Then again...I tend to have to wait months for NoA to port Zelda games into English myself. I don't think it's that awful it's not a multi-language release, I'm sure it'll be translated at some point.
I don't know when South America got the game, but Europe did get it weeks later, so it wasn't a worldwide release, but it was released different times in different parts of the world.
We didn't get even the English version before LucasArts decided that it's time to publish Monkey games in Europe. TellTale at least gives me chance to get the English version exactly at the same moment when the North America gets it.

Of course it was in English and, to make a long story short, it took me about a year (along with Indiana Jones The Fate of Atlantis) to finally beat both games. And how did that happen if I didn't speak any English at all? Well, my dad gave me the best present I could had ever asked for, an English to Spanish dictionary. So not only was it the best learning tool ever created but it actually worked.
I'm not saying that all of you should do the same thing, but that with a little bit of perseverance, all of you could actually learn English using this game. And if you just hate English or believe you should always get everything you pay for in your mother tongue, then just wait for guides/fan translations/official translations to arrive.

I thought that a new Monkey Island after Part 4 will never become real.
So i'm very happy to see a new Monkey Island game and made a decision.
A German Version (with German Voice) will be great for me, but
i want to support the whole Project, so i Pre-Ordered the game a few minutes
ago. I know it's in English and English is not such a Problem for me, but if
you have played the Parts 3 and 4 with German Voice, so you want to play the new Parts also in German Voice. Maybe from the same Speaker Norman Matt.

Not just few days, but almost two weeks later. Americans had already completed the game when we got our hands to it and I had to avoid spoilers. Still it was better as in the case of Curse, which was published in the USA in 1997 and in Europe in 1998.
Like, I said it wasn't unusual to wait several months that some adventure game was finally launched in Europe, not even in the case of LucasArts. Still, we waited patiently and even today I'm waiting that couple of adventure games will be translated* and published around here.
So, I'm wondering how your situation is so unusual, compared to situation we others have, that it justifies vilification campaign against TellTale Games and "Tales of Monkey Island"?
*We probably just get the English version with Finnish box and possibly Finnish manual. You probably will get at least subtitles or full voice overs of those same titles. So you are in better position than I am.
Respect others, If italians/spanish people feel disappointed and want to complaint, you have to respect their position, at least you will have the game on time, no matter what we're doing or thinking, why annoy others?
