one way to be pretty sure that the rumors are fake, check to see if they are on The Sun.

I think the article is fake. I don't see the point with making a Doctor Who feature film when the tv specials are fine as they are. Besides, I don't think theres enough general interest for a Doctor Who movie overall. It's cult in Britain yes, but it's relatively unknown in the rest of the world.

If there has to be a Doctor Who feature film, then I think it should be something special like an animated adaptation of the concept. I would love to see a real animé adaptation of Doctor Who made by one of Japans great animators like Satoshi Kon (Paranoia Agent, Paprika) or Shichihiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo).

In terms of serials, they aren't overused, but the problem is that the serials are shorter (often only one episode), so you notice it more. So they should definately be used less.
Since the show came back, they've been in 4 out of 5 series finales. (Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways, Army of Ghosts/Doomsday, The Stolen Earth/Journey's End and The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang, and that last one does count), so it's hard not to feel like they're overused.

And I don't want a film either. A lot of things are best left to the imagination, like the Time War. No matter how impressive it'd look on screen, it'll never match up to the image I have in my head. Plus, if they did make a movie (which Paul McGann sole adventure was, remember!), they'd probably screw the whole thing up.

Besides, the two-parters are basically TV movies, and that's enough for me.

I disagree. I think they should visualize the Time War some day, as a high budget action-adventure video game. And it should star Paul McGann as the Doctor (with a newly regenerated Christopher Eccleston in a post-credits epilogue scene).

Want i meant to say was, there is an equal, or greater amount of different stories between each dalek encounter, but fewer episodes, making the feel more overused. But yeah, they should be left alone. Although i can't see that happening now they've been remade.

Incidentally, had anyone been listening to the Doctor who Audio plays on radio 7? They're starring Paul Mcgann.

I just bought a few from Bigfinish.com. They are pretty good.

i only just noticed they were airing on BBC 7. It's a shame that we've missed half the series already!

Goodness, what you can miss if you don't check the forums for a day!

    1) Yes, daleks are overused. I'm sorry, but they just are. Not that they're altogether bad, but a greater variety of creative aliens is more fun.

    2) I really would only be interested in a Doctor Who film if it involved British actors/writers. Like Moffat and some of the previous doctors.

    3) I'd like to think that a lesson was learned from that TV movie. I know some people liked it but there were some things that just didn't mesh. And I know people liked McGann in it but he absolutely drove me bonkers-- although, in fairness, he has done quite well in other doctor related media released since then.

4)@swedish_jedi: Have you seen The Infinite Quest? It's not exactly full-blown anime, but it is some very nice animation. Worth watching, I would say. Definitely better than Dreamland, in my opinion.

The most credible rumors I've heard about a film in production were still a little iffy at best, and they were that Tennant and Smith were going to co-star in a film. I have to admit, I would watch that.

Doctor Who: The Two Doctors: The movie!

I liked the Infinite Quest, kinda. It didn't feel too doctor who. Martha didn't sound right for some reason. So it was just Who enough for me
  • edited July 2010
@Remolay: If you watch it right after you watch Dreamland it becomes twice as convincing. :D

It's not perfect, by all means, but if you're after Doctor Who animation it's really not bad. Of course, a proper Doctor Who animated movie would be better, but at least it had the original actors and everything.

I especially liked the prison planet bit of The Infinite Quest. I just found it hilarious that the Doctor was convicted of over a thousand crimes, most of which involved overdue library books.:D

I think it's trouble was that it was too segemented, due to being put in bitesize chunks for Blue Peter.

Anyway. my Mcgann Audio Box set arrived. I wasn't expecting so many Cd's (9!). And iTunes is being stupid.

In the pandorica opens river said that the good wizard is usually The Doctor does anyone think its a reference to Battlefield where the future seventh doctor (or alternate universe doctor) was Merlin?

Could be, but i haven't seen that episode. I would say it was more a comment on how he's usually the one saving the day, as the Doctor previously said "Oh you know these myths, a good old wizard saves the day", so the two quotes are kinda dependant on the other. Thats not to say it's not a sly reffence.

I think it is. The old series never got around to showing when the Doctor played Merlin (it's been awhile, but I think the Doctor was supposed to go back as Merlin sometime in the future) so maybe that's something to look forward to in this series? Or maybe the Doctor will play another good wizard (for some reason the first thing that popped into my head is the Wizard of Oz)?

I did enjoy The Infinite Quest and i agree it was much better than Dreamland, but it didn't amaze me. I hope they'll continue making similar projects in the future, maybe with Matt Smith.

It wouldn't surprise me-- although I bet he's pretty busy with the games on top of everything else.

True, maybe they decided to make the games instead of an animated miniseries this time?

gee I hope not I didnt like the game one bit

That's what everyone's been saying-- it makes me sad. I haven't played it, and I suspect I won't because of what everyone's been saying about it.

Have you tried the second episode? It was a huge improvement over the first. And not just because Cybermen are far better than Daleks. Stealth sections probably totalled 15 minutes of the entire game. And some of the minigames were quite complex.

I think i'll agree with you there. The plots are the only thing that are keeping me coming back. The actual games are kind of throwaway. Without the DW license, it would definately not be somthing i would even think about paying for.

    Blasphemy!

Seriously though:D, the second game seems to be a huge improvement from the first. But I still wonder if it hadn't been better if they just had made ONE big game, instead of several short ones.
  • edited July 2010
Has anyone here played the big finish games? Are they worthwhile?

Edit: Actually, now that I try to trace down where I heard about them, I can't. Maybe I just imagained it, because they don't seem to exist . . . Pity!
  • edited July 2010
*Sigh* Who knows when I'll get to play these games. Even if they aren't all that great, the Doctor Who fangirl inside me is screaming "Must own! Must own!"

If they had made one big game, chances are it would have been like the first episode. They wouldn't have had much feedback to change it.

@nimeni:Big Finish make the excellent doctor who audio plays.

I like the games. They are just like interactive episodes. Sure, they aren't epic action or the most amazing game puzzles around - but they are very reminiscent of Broken Sword 4 - probably because they are being made by Charles Cecil and Sumo Digital - the same people who did that.

And they are free! So you can't complain about that...

I like the episodic format, especially considering we are discussing this on the Telltale Games forums! It's all about episodic around here.

@Friar: Yes, I know, I just somehow got to thinking they had made a couple of games as well. Turns out they made a play called "The Game" and I didn't read that bit very carefully.

Speaking of Doctor Who media outside the television series, what are people's favorite Doctor Who things? (such as which of the audio plays, books, comics, etc do you thoroughly enjoy the most) I've been rather occupied just trying to get through the original series that I haven't gotten to most of the other stuff out there, but I was thinking the other day how nice it would be to just pick up a book or something different for a change.

Well there were a few DW games before the current ones (just not by BF). One was called Destiny of the doctors, and was partly live action.
I kind of preffer the audio plays to the original series. The Parts are shorter, and more compact. I'm currently working my way through Paul McGanns ones (incidentally, the first 50 BF audio plays are on sale now for £5 each at http://bigfinish.com/)

My favorite book is Pest Control read by David Tennant (audio book). Actually, listening to David Tennant read anything is pretty fun because he has a different accent for every single character. I also quite liked The Doctor Trap (also an audio book...and regular book too, but not read by David Tennant) simply because it had lots of silliness featuring a clone and people who like to hunt rare species....like.... shall we say....Timelords...:D:D

@Friar: Oh, I'm glad to hear that-- I was really very sure I'd heard of another Dr Who game and was beginning to think I'd gone crazy! Thank you for validating my sanity!

And now I have some fun books/audio plays to look into. :D

There was also one called Dalek Attack (I think) and then there is the classic Dalek version of the Robots game

Sort of random, but Doctor Who related. I just went to an anime convention and not one but two Doctor cosplayers showed up. One was the Tenth Doctor (with TARDIS) and the other was the Eleventh Doctor (with crowd of fangirls). It made me very happy. :D:D

Heh, that would have been delightful!

You reminded me of the Dead Ringers sketches with Tom Baker's Doctor. I like this one on the London Eye... erm, I mean the interstitial time helix. Couldn't find a YouTube version, hope it works in the US.

I actually have a suit somewhere that looks alot like Matt Smith's. I used it when i had to dress-up as Einstein. It smells of Cabbage.

Also, I just read this. The BBC are doing another 'interactive episode' With Karen Gillan (seperate from the adventure games)

That was hilarious. That guy actually sounded quite a lot like Tom Baker, which I didn't think was possible. :D

It's good enough to fool Sylvester McCoy!
    A Comparison between the two

My favourite sketch. I miss Deadringers. =(
